There is a little truth in that "constructive criticism," now and then, can spur one on to improve and learn, but no one would ever get better from continual crucifixtion.

I don't think Prince is vindictive so he would never deliberately treat his fans badly. He takes on more of a fatherly role, tapping them on the knuckles when they go too far and lets us know who's the boss. He wants ownership of his stuff, nothing wrong with that.

He brings out songs that say "no more candy for you & haters on the internet" but plays peek-a-boo, releasing stuff in various places like Dr F, ytube Shelby & the Current radio station.

So there is candy, but he's into delaying gratification (which I guess is a characteristic he learnt pretty late in life,) so...he's slow on Lotus. And why not? So many fans have gotten so much stuff for free via bootlegs etc why should he bother? Mountains and the Paris stuff was available illegally on the net before Lotus. He can't beat the speed of technology, fanatics & piracy. So he probably thinks, "Ok, if that's the way you want it, fine, but don't expect me to overfeed you." Gluttony and greed are sins afterall.

Forget about the vindictive and just look at the analysis. The other side and I think larger side of the coin is:

When you have enough experience and have achieved much in a certain field, one doesn't listen to a handful of disgruntled non-experts truths and take it as "the truth." Prince probably rises above it, distances himself from it, takes a few hints with a pinch of salt, but keeps doing what he's been doing.

He probably knew that Purple and Gold would be highly critisized but he knows what he's capable of, it's just a football song, a fun project, so what does it matter what his fans think? He's beyond that. He knows who he is.

If he had to do the opposite and take all the fans' whining and complaints to heart, he'd probably have given up making music a long time ago. Or made it and never released it.

Of course another theory is, that he may have taken some of the complaints to heart (it's hard not to be curious and hard to be completely made of iron.) Severe criticism might have hurt him a little and so he decided to do as little as possible with lotusflower to ease his pride.

Prince knows though, that.....moan or not.....what everyone wants is MORE OF PRINCE. I'm sure he appreciates feedback on his output but the majority of fans who dislike his current or recent output always compare it to his "old" stuff. It's like saying the Empire State building is a shit piece of architecture compared to the Colosseum in Rome. But they are uncomparable. The time, the materials on hand, the admirers, the architectural trends are just different because of when they were built. And it's the same with music. The artist, the life, the listeners are different to 20 years ago. And if they aren't, then little progress has been made.

With the body of work Prince has released,the amount of bootlegged material,the movies,specials,concerts,after show gigs.

If you don't like The dozen or so albums he's released in the past 10 years,you've got the dozen or so from the 10 years before that,or the dozen or so from the 10 years before that.

You can buy the 21 nights book/with cd for 4 dollars/pounds/euros & fans complain about the book being too big or the live cd being not great whilest ALL the 21 nights are available! Purple Rush,The Work,etc...all the side prodjects,The Time,Slaugtherhouse,Apolina,
The songs that other artists covered.It's endless.You guys have it too good.

I know little to not much about the record company,web sites,copy right issues,but I doubt he doesn't care about his fans to the point where he wants to punish them.I may be wrong but with the amount of music he gives,I'm not bothered.

On Larry King Prince was talking about bootlegs and referred to, "So-Called Fans".

He knows his biggest fans are the ones taping/buying/selling his art illegally and complaining about his music not sounding like it used to/ his friends like Larry Graham, etc. In 1992 (circa) he said he just likes fans to just say "I dig what you do" or something to that effect. I think he's more interested in pleasing himself musically and being listened to by those who simply dig his music.

So, I see where he would see that his "biggest fans" are theives/complainers, not just enjoying the ride. The fans in turn want legit releases of the real goods.

Prince 2010 probably doesn't release the vault of concert dvd's just because it's the theives/complainers that want it. A screw you.
