no, I'm not missing the point.

Prince is not that good at that style of playing, I never said that is what counts.

If you have the Purple Rush boots, there are several examples of Prince in rehersal rocking out speed metal i.e. When Doves Scream. Get these rehersals and you'll see that Prince can speed it up with the best of them.

I don't have those, but I find it a little hard to believe that out of all Prince albums & songs available you'd have to go to a bootleg to find him showing off his speed metal skills. That's a little like th folks who claim Michael Jackson is awesome at piano & guitar.

I think he's a very good guitar player, I just don't really believe that style is his strong suit. He plays the occasional fast run, but that's not the same as being good at speed metal & impressing those fans.

..."Prince is 2000 times better than Kirk Hammett"...

Hell..Wendy is 2000 times better than Kirk Hammett.

Nice guy but his lead playing is terrible. Over bends out of pitch and wanks on the wah sooo much. Hetfield kicks his ass on rhythm and lead guitar.

Just because Prince doesn't show it doesn't mean he can't do it. Another video to check out is Prince playing Shhh, 7 and Creep at Cochella. Check his speed out as his shreds the ax on those songs.

He owns that entire band, he beat Lars in a drum off before.

Hetfield carries that band.
I still play pokemon. I play warcraft. And I'm awesome.

Prince said once in an interview, something like "... take Gett Off, that's pretty metal, isn't it?" Anyone else remember this? But then again, Prince himself isn't someone who likes to categorize music that much.

Also, what do you think about Bambi? Or I'm Yours? Playing is not that fast though, so this is a bit off the subject. I consider them more like heavy rockers, or something like that.

I wish he would just write a solo album already.

Every time I hear this, I have to wonder, "is that really Prince?" The style of singing is nothing like I've ever heard him do.

Even that example is not speed metal, maybe just "rock" guitar. My oldest son listens to speed metal, and trust me, no one would want Prince to sound like that. It sucks!!! I've heard a ton of it, and have never been impressed. Sounds like pure evil garbage from the pits of hell, if you ask me. Hearing speed metal makes my soul cry and my heart hurt.

I'd like to see Prince play like this

Just because it's fast doesn't mean it is that easy like some people have said.

playing fast is hard! Anyone who says otherwise has never tried. It's just that playing beautifully and with expression is also hard, and it's more important to some people.

Prince could play speed metal if that's what he focused on, I just don't think he does. It doesn't mean he can't play some fast riffs or technical stuff. But I doubt he spends hours a day with a metronome improving his speed through drills & exercises like these metal guys do.

He seems to prefer just playing to practicing, and giving the guitar a singing quality. It's like Jeff Beck said recently "a singer doesn't go 'dedededededede' so why should the guitar player?" It's a different point of view away from the technical and more towards the musical.

Same with classical, Prince could play classical, but he'd have to live it for years to do it well. You can't just do it one day because you're bored with funk & rock and happen to be awesome.

As a guitar player, the things I'm most impressed by from Prince are his rhythm playing or the acoustic stuff he did on the Musicology tour. His playing on Cream was awesome, switching back & forth from rhythm to some lead fills in between vocal lines.

It's not showy, it's musical, and it's effortless.

If you like simultaneous lead and rhythm on acoustic guitar, you should check out a Richard Thompson solo acoustic show or recording.

I only know Shoot Out the Lights, but he does have quite a reputation. That particular skill impresses me even more today because I'm the only guitar player in my band, and that's really difficult for me to do.

It's actually something that I admire Jimi for, as well, even more than setting his guitar on fire :lol;

Oh yes, Jimi was an excellent rhythm guitarist. Wind Cries Mary, Hey Joe, Angel.. plenty of material. Anyone can set a guitar on fire smile

Listen man, I'm not gonna lie, I've skipped over some replies in this thread, only to make this point:

Kirk Hammett is one of the best. So is Prince. Anyone who says Prince just messes around in the pentatonic is missing the point.

Prince's language is the pentatonic. Anyone, I mean ANYONE can learn that scale and its variatons. But it takes a true guitarist to really express the wealth of ideas that Prince does in that scale.

I KNOW Prince messes around with stuff like Phrygian and Dorian. Some of his songs just require it. We have 12 tones in Western culture, and it just so happens Prince is ridiculous at making each one of those 12 tones sing.

Dig? cool

cerpintaxt you are right.
Prince never uses pentatonic only he combines
it with modes such as:
Phrygian and Dorian .
problem is that most of orgers who play
guitar only know pentatonic and can't recognise modes which Prince use frequently

Actually banished I've read posts from many guitar playing orgers that know P uses different scales and modes in his solos. blackguitaritsz (what's up bro if you're reading this), carlcranshaw, Jessedez, Gustavo and others have brought it up.

And zaza I'm being sarcastic about Wendy. But I'd rather hear Wendy play the opening chord to "Purple Rain" over and over all day than hear 1 guitar solo played by Kirk. He's the luckiest dude in heavy metal.

Have you listened to Kirk's solos on Death Magnetic or seen the videos of Metallica live? Kirk has become a pitiful lead player. Granted, I don't keep tabs on Wendy's playing but I wouldn't doubt that she's better than Kirk now. Hell, most youtube/basement guitarists are. :lol
