Seems old boy is in a slump.we all know prince can bring it.but the last 2 songs.[purple and gold,cause and effect]not his best work.Is he uninspired?In need of talented competition?Is he going through the motions?Or just plain old writers block?I've had it 41 yrs now.

Considering how many songs he´s written in his career, I´m actually amazed that he´s still capable of writing new material.

he might be recording an album right now but whether it delivers something fresh or just more of the same i guess we have to wait and see

i think that music and lyrics are always flowing through him,
but for the last few years he's been working from within a
singular paradigm of "good vs evil."

there is nothing wrong with this, but sometimes (atleast to me)
if overshadows other themes that prince is a master of
covering...such as love, heartache, happiness

i guess what i am referring to is overall themes of his
latest releases

Writer's block means you can't write. At all.

By definition, Prince doesn't have it.

I don't think Prince has writer's block. Who knows when these songs were written. The football one I believe was recent, but as it's a football song can you include it in among his normal repertoire? I personally thought the lyrics were fine for what it was.

The latest track, (whenever it was written) while it might not be the best ever & it's hard when he's competing against his own previous work, doesn't sound like writer's block.

It sounds like he's enjoying some nostalgia, looking back, reminising, thinking of advice he'd give the youth if he knew then what he knew now, maybe comparing that with conflicting advice he himself has received in the past. He sums it all up as realising that what it all boils down to in life is cause and effect...the mover of it all and the things being moved....and that in the end, it's all about compassion.

It's not a complex song, it carries a simple message although definitely more waves of emotion in the music. Songs don't always have to have perfect lyrics to be enjoyable. Sometimes the music should do the talking, or vice versa & sometimes both talk.

In comparison say to Black Eyed Peas "I gotta feeling" which was a huge hit, that song has pretty ordinary but fun lyrics. Reading those in black & white might definitely seem like writer's block e.g "here we come here we go" can it be any more simple, yet it struck a chord in many hearts and was hugely successful.

Agree with Genesia, having writer's block implies that NOTHING is happenening. When you write stuff and it's no good, that just means you were having an off day...not writer's block.

well maybe but id say that if u have writers block but ur hung up on having a product cuz u spouted about how u needed to ditch wb cuz they limit ur awesome output, then u write anyway but instead of coming up with something new u regurgitate concepts lyrics song structures and stylz and cuz ur talented u just push it out play all the instruments create the product. and thats what we got from prince reheated leftovers with new song titles. so in that sense i believe he has had writers block for a long time but has the skill to push out weak prince sounding copies of his former work for a quick cash infusion. again i propose we boycott his work till some real inspiration comes and also refer to him as tafka as punishment for selling us drivel under the prince name.

it's just two giveaway streaming internet tracks. what's everyone freaking out about?

The man has given great songs for 30 yrs-hell give him a break.
