Sorry, but what exactly is new wave?

dunce

Is The Beautiful Ones also considered new wave?

No.

Think Talking Heads, Blondie, The Cars, The Knack, and Gary Numan.

It was a lot of bands that were New Wave: The Abc Band, Thompson Twins even David Bowie. Prince was experimenting sounds. (New Wave) Some of those sounds are the case. David Bowie music's was new wave. Some of his sound were R&B and rock. So is the case with Prince in the early 80's.

I never suggested that the bands I mentioned were a definitive list - merely examples of New Wave.

Bowie was not New Wave. Space Oddity came out in 1969 - long before punk, New Wave or even glam rock. He dabbled in New Wave later, but was not a New Wave artist.

Also...as I said earlier, When You Were Mine is not New Wave. It is straight, old-school rock 'n' roll.

Some new wave IS straight, old-school rock n roll. BowWowWow was new wave but most accounts and they were doing Bo Diddley's guitar sound. Devo had a hit with a Rolling Stones song from 1965. The Go GOs were called new wave (though I questioned it at times) and their hit, "Our Lips Are Sealed" was blatantly inspired by the girl group sound of the 50s.

Not only is When You Were Mine a new wave song, it is Prince's first released new wave song.

As I said earlier in the thread, there are songs that are not New Wave songs that have been given New Wave treatments. The fact that Devo did a New Wave interpretation of Satisfaction does not make Satisfaction a New Wave song - any more than the fact that BowWowWow lifted Bo Diddley's guitar sound makes Diddley a New Wave artist.

In the same way, you will never convince me that When You Were Mine is a New Wave song - because it isn't.

Well that logic is faulty - if a classic rock song can be done as new wave then it can be new wave. That was my point. Of course Bo Diddley isnt new wave - but elements of his rock n roll are inherent to new wave since new wave is a sub genre of rock. When You Were Mine is a new wave rock n roll song. Dont care about convincing you (everyone is entitled to their opinions regardless of how wrong they are) - just get the logic right.

I didn't say 'David Bowie' was straight "New Wave" but he did some.

Lodger (1979) was the final album in Bowie's so-called "Berlin Trilogy", or "triptych" as Bowie calls it. It featured the singles "Boys Keep Swinging", "DJ" and "Look Back in Anger" and, unlike the two previous LPs, did not contain any instrumentals. The style was a mix of New Wave and world music, which included pieces such as "African Night Flight" and "Yassassin". A number of tracks were composed using the non-traditional Bowie/Eno composition techniques: "Boys Keep Swinging" was developed with the band members swapping their instruments while "Move On" contains the chords for an early Bowie composition, "All The Young Dudes", played backwards; the song "Red Money" took backing tracks from the Iggy Pop/David Bowie composition "Sister Midnight" from Pop's album The Idiot. This was Bowie's last album with Eno until 1. Outside in 1995. http://en.wikipedia.org/w...avid_Bowie
Prince 'When You Were Mine'.
Had some elements of New Wave & Roll 'n' Roll to me.

You all are a riot! New wave was the early 80's version of alternative. Meaning that it's very subjective...

Best bet is to compare sounds to bands/artists that were considered new wave at the time...

Correct.

If you want to be picky about it, none of Prince's songs were "New Wave".
