Fav new wave song by Prince He did alot of great ones in the 80s. Annie Christian, Sexuality, in fact the entire Controversy album except Do Me Baby (and even that is like a new wave ballad). Something in the Water. When You Were Mine. Delirious.

Both of you have already listed a lot of great ones. I'd add "All the Critics Love U in New York". I've always loved the thumping beat and the guitar in the background is crazy! It took me a while before I paid it much attention but he's tearing it up!

I just really took a good critical listen to Controversy a few days ago and I like most of the songs on it. But I am really puzzled by the lyrics from "Annie Christian." Can someone in the know give me some context and feedback on it? Mark me down as truly puzzled. Is the whole song really referring to the infamous ABSCAM scandal or are there personal undertones in this song I don't get? Especially the "taxicab" reference?! Here are the lyrics: Annie Christian wanted 2 be number one But her kingdom never comes Thy will be done She couldn't stand the glory She would be second 2 none The way Annie tells the story She's His only Son Annie Christian wanted 2 be a big star So she moved 2 Atlanta And she bought a blue car She killed black children And what's fair is fair If U try and say U're crazy Everybody say, "Electric chair!" (Electric chair!) CHORUS: Annie Christian, Anti-Christ Until U're crucified I'll live my life in taxicabs Annie Christian, Anti-Christ Until U're crucified I'll live my life in taxicabs Annie Christian was a whore Always lookin' 4 some fun Being good was such a bore So she bought a gun She killed John Lennon Shot him down cold She tried 2 kill Reagan Everybody say, "Gun control!" (Gun control!) CHORUS "Liar, liar, liar!" Gotcha in a jam Put your head on the block Somebody say, "ABSCAM!" (ABSCAM!)

When U Were Mine is a New Wave song??? I never considered it to be one. Do people base this view on the keyboard riff?
If the song is technically New Wave, then that would be my pick. Otherwise, I'll go out on a limb and say "Horny Toad." Yes, I know it's a B-side and it's short, but I love the playfulness of the music and lyrics! I don't consider Automatic to be a New Wave song at all. https://www.youtube.com/@PurpleKnightsPodcast

"When U Were Mine" or "Dirty Mind". Both are stone cold New Wave classics. In fact, the main keyboard riff in "Dirty Mind" is quintissentially New Wave. the music knows what your motives are when you are making it
listen to The Replacements - its good for the soul

Completely new wave - it was covered by Cyndi Lauper in the 80s when she was the top female new wave artist. I believe it was covered by Mitch Ryder as well.

The first Prince song I ever heard in a new wave club was "Let's Pretend We're Married"; plus they showed the extended video of "Automatic." [Edited 3/12/10 14:32pm]

It is a straightforward rock 'n' roll song. Others may have done New Wave-ish versions of it. But Prince's is not. [Edited 3/12/10 14:36pm] We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Not an easy answer, but strictly new wave in a new wave context, it has to be sexuality, the sound and the lyrics (Its the deepest thing on Controversy) this is Prince at his new wave best.
Speaking of new wave, apparently he went to a party thrown by Visage's Steve Strange (The guy who looked like Uncle Fester) when he was London playing the Lyceum. Maybe he got some ideas for new wave from that. So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

[Edited 3/12/10 14:36pm] THANK YOU, Genesia. It's pretty clear from this thread that some folks think any song with a synth line is New Wave. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
