My advice is to buy whatever really sticks out at you. When I first got into Prince 3 or 4 years ago I sought the advice of fellow posters, which was a great help, but it was also a great feeling to just pick up Parade because it looked like it was gonna be an interesting album. Then you also get the surprise of hearing it all unopinionated. Long story short, don't read too much of what we all say without listening to it all first on your own!  Superb advice.and yeah,your right I don't yet own the amount of cd's I desire.Of course I want all of them but I suppose the only way to own this size of a collection is build it & live with some of the albums for awhile.Last year I listened to a few of the albums without any opinions & it's a much more organic way to let the music in for sure.That said,I appreciate any advice.
The few I physical albums I own are:Purple Rain,Sign O'The Times,Graffiti Bridge,Come,Diamonds & Pearls,Love Symbol,Emancipation,Musicology,3121,Planet Earth,Indigo Nights & The Very Best Of. The few on my i-tunes I have are:Dirty Mind,Controversy,1999:Foefur's remaster, Around The World In A Day:Foefur's,Parade:Foefur's,Sign O'The Times:Foefur's,Lovesexy:Foefur's,Batman Foefur's,Diamonds & Pearls:Foefur's,The Black Album:Foefur's,The Gold Experience,Lotusflow3r. I got into JB and Hendrix in the 80s and had the same experience - only the same best ofs available in record stores and the rest ahd to be hunted down 2nd hand (Hendrix was re-issued in the late 80s, early 90s). But that was the fun part!!! "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

Prince seems to be in a different "orbit" than his fans at times. When everyone gets in the same "orbit" and synchs up.... man can the guy click with his fans...not to mention the rest of the world. When that happens....the world changes  Help others get ahead. You will always stand

You are right.It's much more of a journey having to seek it out & discover it.It's probably more rewarding. When I get to the stage where I own everything after years of secound hand record shops,Prince will release a complete 300-disc box-set! From what I'm learning though,perhaps not. 
Hendrix bass player Noel Redding of The Experience'used live down the road here.He died a few years ago.Was supposesd to be a lovely guy.He used play every Monday night in a bar down the road. |

I think that Prince makes some albums obscure DELIBERATELY as it makes it more interesting to a new fan.
Its a fun journey of discovery. Other than this, most other major artists have a much smaller catalogue, most of which you know of already so theres nothing else to discover. And with all his 100s of released songs theres still the 100s if not 1000s of unreleased stuff! I wish I was a new fan again as discovering his music was a joy | |

I agree at times that it seems as if Prince is trying too hard to come up with new sounds and the like. Though he must get so completely bored at times and I understand why he would want to explore new sounds and not just stick with "what works".....I think it's something that comes with being a creative talent much more complex than most and it seems he wants to share his ideas with the rest of us.....do I wish he'd stick to the funk??? heck yeah!!! and do I ever love it when he includes his "funk soldiers" in the mix. I totally agree with you.I was sent the files for free so naturally I took them.I stayed away from them mostly though,but it was my only way for now of getting 1999,Lovesexy,Around The World..,Parade,Batman & The Black Album. I've not got a credit card & none of the record shops had them.It's not the same expereince at all though.It was just a way of obtaining them until' I find them.  [Edited 3/7/10 13:33pm] |

I wanted to go see him last year in Dublin,but anyways...
Would love to see him live.I remember a few years back hearing about an after show gig he did in Dublin that lasted longer than the concert.I love that about him.The fact that he's so into it. Yoko Ono! Ha! She said last year that 'John would love The Beatles Rock Band game'. Pherhaps she could be called Yuka Honda & give us a Prince Rock Band Game & pimp the shit out of his catalog. |
