A Question 4 Those of U who have seen Purple Rain in the theatre within the past 2 years 1 of my jobs involves working at an independent movie theatre that does midnight movies every other week. 4 several years now, we've been bandying about showing Purple Rain, but none of us have any way of finding out the quality of the print that Warner has available 4 repertory shows.
So I wanted 2 ask all of y'all on the org who have seen PR in a theatre recently what quality of the print was. I know it showed at the Walter Reade in NYC last 4th of July, and surely some1 went 2 it. We want 2 b able 2 show this film cranked up and give people an experience they can't get at home, but if there's lots of splices or audio dropouts, then that's something we'd want 2 know in advance. Thank u. Once upon a time in a haystack of despair; happiness sometimes hard to find, yeah.

I saw it at the Y in NYC, then at Walter Reade. I don't recall any audio dropouts or splices...
The only thing I remember is some people at the WR showing seemed "bored with it, whereas the crowd at the Y was lively. At the Y, they added subtitles for the songs so people could sing along... Thank u. I'm intrigued by this news since I haven't seen Purple Rain in a theater since the 1980s, when I saw it well over twenty times. The last time I saw it was at a $1.00 theater, and I recall the film quality then wasn't so great. It looked like an inferior copy of the original film that I had seen when the movie first came out--with visible "threads" appearing on the film, jerkiness, and some audio problems. I hope there is a re-mastered copy out there for movie theaters. I live in a city with many "art" theater venues, so I am hoping they will show a revival of PR here. I'm going to check with local theaters to see if they are going to do this. That would be really fun! Like the Rocky Horror Picture Show used to be--with people dressing up and actually performing!Good old times! Let us know what you find out.

Went to Purple Rain in Uptown Minneapolis about a year and a half ago. The film was grainy, but the audio was loud without any huge flaws. It was far from good picture quality, but the packed theater didn't see to mind.

I'd like to see PR in a theater again. I should have gone to the Uptown screening. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.
