And I've heard that song at least a hundred times.

I dunno, Andrew. Sometimes when I read lyrics, I kinda close off my mind to it.

There's so much music of his to listen to. As a matter of fact, I'm listening to the Musicology cd today. I haven't listened to it since 2006. I love a lot of the tracks on this cd. Would love it if he releases a new track similar to "Call My Name". A nice, bluesy/r&b track with a sexy twist to it, and a sprinkle of "Shh" and "Adore".

Tracks I like on this cd are:

Call My Name
Musicology
Million Days - love the guitar on this track
Marrying Kind
What Do You Want Me to Do?
Dear Mr. Man
If I Was The Man in Your Life

I listen to Prince pretty often. There's always lulls but consistently I listen to him more than any other musician other than David Bowie.

When I was working at the Coffee Shop in the St. Paul Cheapo, I would play Prince albums over the P.A. all the time and people got fucking sick of it.

true, and even without listening to a song we can say we don't like it because how can you like something you don't know? wink

I believe you can form an opinion after a single listen, but it doesn't mean it is a fully informed opinion.

There are no rules, so if you're happy with that stance it's fine with me, but I know for myself that some of my favorite songs did absolutely nothing for me on first listen.

Have you never discovered something that you didn't notice the first time around?

Didn't CJ question him about this, and he chickenned out and said the song wasn't about her? lol pussy

I removed all of Prince's stuff from Itunes the other week. I think i'm done, not been feeling his average studio work in truth, for the last few years.

I'm watching Thriller on PS3's Vidzone. Can't help but think of Bo Selecta. And for a wolf his tracking skills were shit.

Oh, yeah, on topic. Umm, actually listen as in concentrate? On occasion. Depends on the song. Not that often. The old stuff I used to listen to (we are talking lyrically aren't we?) because I was young and Prince was a real sexual being back then, full of wonder, spirituality and the urge to fuck. It suited my age.

Nowadays his lyrics have no relation to my life or opinions. I'm educated and able enough to read, listen, engage, comprehend, analyse and critique pretty much whatever I choose.

Musically I find his new material lacking when compared to albums like Lovesexy, Parade and so on (yes I know that's boring). I still buy the new ones mind you biggrin

I find I can relate more to someone like Lilly Allen more than I can Prince. We live in different worlds so how can I find any connection when he sings about God, slavery or US propaganda. As for women? Well I'm in a better place than he is there so he can't tell me or teach me a thing. Lucky me I guess: although he did choose to marry his music and image. Which was lucky for us smile

Right back to the telly and diy (Queen playing at the moment - my favourite guitarist bar none).

Very thoughtful and well-stated. It really is too bad that it seems so hard to get folks to "agree to disagree"...

Shame really as our soldiers would stop dying then. Better still would be for folks to agree to agree. Depending on which side you're on of course. Anyone ever see that Mitchell and Webb sketch with the two Nazis? Very funny.

If the question is do I listen to Prince then, yes, I am listening to "Planet Earth" right now. I'm planning to kick in "Controversy" later on.

Both enjoyable albums.

Honestly, the entire argument you make is from a Fam point of view. It's not the way people listen to music that is the problem. To me, that is one of the weakest excuses I've ever heard. It's the MUSIC that is the problem. Prince has gone soft and sloppy. Usually he doesn't focus on the track enough to make a genuine song and on the rare occasions when he does we get some unrelateable Black Panther-Jehovah's Witness-Larry Graham Thinks I'm Cool -Name Dropping- Overconfidence Masking Desperation-Garbage. biggrin

Black Panther? That entire post sounds invalid (ie. stupid)

Whenever Prince (or The Mars Volta, another of my all-time favorite) come out with an album I listen to it for at least a week, and nothing else. I study the music, after I listen to it all the way through. I always read liner notes, study the art. I bought a vinyl record about a year ago and love them better than cds'.

Back in the day there were more "real artist". Artist didn't need auto-tune and etc. The quality of music was better & that may be why people really "listened" back then. Now days, anyone can get on the scene with no real talent so there's so much junk in the music world, what is there to really "listen" to. Not saying all new artist are junk!

Prince is apart of a dying breed & I'm also amazed that he is still around. That's why I feel whether or not peole dislike his music, at least we still get music from him.

I hope this made sense, lol.

P.s. To all the older folks, your so lucky that you grew up during a great time of music, I soooo wish I was around!!!!

My opinion exactly! THAT is the way you LISTEN to music--on many different levels, just the way you would analyze and write a review about another subject you are investigating! I was around to hear P perform in the old days and he is from a "dying breed" although there are many young artists that are good. You just don't hear about them in today's popular media sources. My son listens to music the way you do, and not only is he a musician but he is very picky about the artists he likes--old and new. And he definitely likes P's music! And I think it is amazing that P is still putting out NEW music and hasn't let himself become a has-been act like so many others--even if not everyone thinks his latest is his best! I hope he still continues making new music and letting us hear it, even if we don't all like it. wink

When I find out there's people like me and your son around it gives me hope for the future!! I'm also a musician, influenced by real artist!! I'm glad P is not a has-been either! A lot of todays artist sound a-like. When one person gets hot, a crop of sound alikes pop up. Its sad. I feel bad for the gen after me!

My son is 21 and he says the same thing you do! Do you play guitar? My son has been teaching himself for the past five years and he can really play some tunes now on a professional level...even writes some of his own music! He is not only picky with his own performances but can really critique those of others... I hope you keep blazing your own musical trails... Be glad that you are young and aware and educated about music, unlike many others. But there are many good artists from the younger generation, too. I listen to and am always open to hearing new GOOD music from artists of any age (as long as it isn't American Idol/Disney influenced)! LOL

I'm 22. Drums are my main instrument. Write my own music/lyrics. If your son has a music page I am interested in hearing it! Being a good critic of yourself & others is a good skill, as long as your honest! Lol. No Chris Daughtery(sp) for you, lol.

Yeh, there are some new school folks holding it down. We have to be sure to support them or they'll disappear.

No, my son doesn't have a music page. He's trying to finish a degree in biology at the moment, so he doesn't get to play as much as he likes. But if you would org note to me, if you have your own music page, I would gladly pass it on. I agree with you; in the new context of music, as far as the business goes, internet support and exposure are all important! Look at the artists who have succeeded despite and because of the internet. Lily Allen and Susan Boyle come to mind, as unlikely as anyone would pair them together! LOL Can give hope for any musician at any age! Even if my son doesn't hook up--you should post your music on the org artist page, then I could hear it! Kudos to you for pursuing your dream! biggrin
