Prince "seems to gets a kick out of doing you cold" I've heard and read stories about how Prince likes to bring artists onstage and challenge their musicianship. He'll call a guest artist onstage at a concert and then embarrass them because they were unable to keep up with him and his band. Or he would do stuff like having his sound guy cut the power to the guitar when a guest is playing. It's interesting how he seems to get a kick out of being cold like that.
I can remember instances where he wasn't 100% on stage. Forgot/mis sung lyrics (to his own songs mind you). There are even a few performances and songs where I thought he took something as simple as a blues scale or a three chord progession and postured and gyrated around enough to make it seem like he just performed a feat of magic. When most musicians would know that it was just a simple blues scale (and a hell of alot of Boss/Roland effects pedals). He's always quick to tell people to study their instrument while it took him 20+ years to be respected as a guitarist. I love Prince as an artist but I never could understand why he would get such a kick out of being cold to other artists like that. "If you wanted to buy a Sam Cooke album, where would you go?"

I don't have a songcheck. You don't have a clothescheck.

I don't know that he IS respected as a guitarist. He hardly appears on any "lists". **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Serious? Being on a list is what you think respect is? You know those lists are bullshit , right? "New Power slide...."

He gave the floor to quite a few singers and musicians of the amateur sort during the One Nite Alone tour rehearsals. There's a lot of boots of the Soundchecks that fans were part of, and many times a fan got up there and either sang and/or played guitar or piano. The band joined right in. He did the same in one of the Celebrations. My friend Connie got up and sang "Manic Monday", and did it quite well.

What I meant is that a "list" is what the masses go by and the masses overlook him as a guitarist. He has impressed the "masses" with many performances in recent years, but when you read about guitarists, P is hardly ever mentioned. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

That's cool. That must have been a great experience! Did she ever get a copy of it? I think Prince has always had this thing about acts that get breaks but don't really "deserve" them, don't have the vocal or musical chops for real but are "stars" none the less - making money while true artists get screwed over or never make it at all. Musicology was about making real music. Come to think of it, on the last album he was like "where's the real drummer? and he says something else about some artists who can't sing on "No More Candy For You" Testing the guest artists live was probably his way of trying to expose some of the B S. Good to know he doesn't try to embarass acts like that anymore. I can't imagine getting the chance to jam with Prince and screwing up or getting called out like that. That would make me want to fall through the damn floor. ~ ~ ~ "If you wanted to buy a Sam Cooke album, where would you go?"

She has a copy from the bootlegs that were produced from all those shows. She wears the incident proudly. In the early days of Prince actually being in a chat room on his site (circa 1998 or so), he once called her "Mini Mayte", and it's a name she's used online a lot over the years following.

i believe the last celeb Prince embarrased was Paris hilton. I read in some magazine that she was at one of his concerts and he was singing "Kiss" and she got onstage and before he handed her the mic he said, "Lets see if she can really sing",she then stormed offstage and left. I wouldve loved to have seen that. It happened in 2007 btw
