Latest opinons on the rainbow children.

Took me a few years but I became really fond of it last spring. Thoughts?

I liked the Rainbow Children too. I didn't see anything wrong with it.
It had some bad points. But if you really listen to it there were some good points too.

Still sucks.
Its not like dog turd that eventually dries up and becomes a nourishment for plants and bugs and stuff, it still stinks and wont make no plant grow or bugs eat it.

The consensus seems to be that fams will say they that they..."originally hated it!" but upon forced listening were able to brainwash themselves into submission. Like when you walk into the monkey house and think "whats that smell!" half hour later you got used to it.
The point being, never stay in the monkey house so long as to ever get used to shit like this.

It's fantastic. Very inspired and soulful. I don't agree with the main theme of the album but is a fun story to follow, he means this sh*t! It's emotion and from a serious place unlike a lot of recent stuff put out, it's easy to say it's his last completely good album. It's a concept album in a very psychedelic cult way and I like that certain people don't get it, it only adds mystic to the record, it makes me feel good when it's done and want to listen to again, that alone makes it a great album.

Can you hear inspiration? Can you hear when someone is desperate and wants to be heard? The sum of the feeling of this record isn't any different than the feeling of Purple Rain or The Gold Experience and it's powered by emotion and wants to hit you hard, this record is so underrated, packs more emotion and creativity than anything he's done since and some of that is really good.

Anyway, it needs love, it's interesting.

I've loved TRC from the start (narration and all). However, I've got to be in a certain the mood to listen to it. But I suppose that can be said about every album.

It's up there with the 80'classics for me & fell in love with the album on the first listen. It was the best thing I had heard since The Gold Experience (& beats it in my opinion). The only record that has come close since is Lotusflow3r (should have been single disc).

I wouldn't say that's the consensus at all, as evidenced by most of the replies in this thread.

I have to say it was an instant hit for me - coming after the likes of Rave, it was a breath of fresh air. Can't say I agree with all of the lyrics, but its a great work of art.

I read things about it that kept me away, then I finally bought it and loved it from the start

For me, I listen to music for the sake of the music 1st, then the melody or how the song is sung -not really for the actual lyrics, the bass line is next, beat, then finally if the song is not instrumental(I listen to a lot of jazz & house) the lyrics last.

Naw. it sucks beyond sucking.
When in the monkey house, after the initial getting used to the smell, you sometimes see the monkeys throwing and rubbing their feces all over themselves.....not good my friend, get out of the monkey house.

Fantastic album, from the first time I heard it. Contoversial yeah but if you have strong beliefes it shouldn't shock u. It's up there with his best albums.

"The Rainbow Children," tells a great story. It's like listening to a musical book. I'm hoping Prince will do another album someday like this. cool

You're totally right. That being said I still love listening to this record. The music itself is beautiful, and it came as no surprise to me personally that Prince is a fucking LOON. Just because the man is a genius musician and I can totally dig on this record doesn't mean I swallow every weird word that falls out of his face.

Almost unbearable. I can appreciate the experimentation, but my God!!!
I cant help but wonder if he really thought he had something. You know, kinda like he did with Gold and Rave. This was the first commercial release since going back to "Prince" and it was even tagged with a "contraversial" sticker.
Ive been disapointed in some of his songs, of course. But this took the cake. I was literally pissed off when I listened to it. Should have never been released. I would have rather waited 2 more years on a new Prince album than to have bought that horrible cd!
It was just bad bad bad!

10 years! OMG! Why are you still here then, If Prince didn't do anything interesting for you in the last 10 years...? I don't get that... that's just plain weird if you ask me... to hang around like that hmmm

I think the album is brilliant... I don't give a flying fuck about religion... but the simple musicianship that Prince and his band recorded here is outstanding work! And if you just... just give it a go... and just listing to the musicianship... you'll enjoy it. And don't let Prince brainwash you.. cuz that's what people think he was doing right? Come on! ... Like Freddie Mercury said one time... it's JUST a RECORD people get so exited about these things!
