Fastest selling uk album It occurred to me yesterday that selling 3 million copies of Planet Earth in one day in the UK,,, would that of been the fastest selling album had the industry allowed it to be counted?
Yes it would - Oasis - here and now - 696,000 has the uk record for album sales in a week. Prince 3 million - pretty much 1 day I know he gave it away in a newspaper but it still costs to buy it and the Daily Mail never sells anywhere near 3 million. anyway, no doubt someones already mentioned that. I'm sure it's called "Be Here Now".

Whilst this may be a politically motivated answer, the Mail is a politically motivated paper. It is shameful that Prince used this hysteric and polarising tabloid as a method of delivery for this album... albeit a shit album in keeping with the tone of the paper he was dealing with. Acknowledging the fact that Prince has demonstrated Republican leanings most of his adult life, the turgid political moment that was Dear Mr Man allowed me a moment to consider Prince has changed his political tune. I'm not entirely sure that he has. This is the man that gave us Ronnis Talk to Russia, Free, America, Live 4 Love etc... ok, he's also given us Money Don't Matter 2night... a small price to pay for his ignorance in many other areas. So, go ahead, celebrate 3million sales... ponder the fact that he went to The Mail to allow such a deal to take place.

I thought it was a little strange as The Mail wouldn't have approved of the lyrics to Dirty Mind, Darling Nikki et al but he probably wasn't clued in or money was the deciding factor.

i'm pretty sure Prince would not have known or cared about The Mail's political agenda. He would have been concerned about the dollar signs. Besides being a JW no papers politcal beliefs would've fitted in with his. ----------

Peace But UK papers give albums away on a regular basis, some sell more than the Mail on Sunday, i fail to see how the above hasn't been repeated numerous times by any number of acts by now.

1. Its a good album 2. The Mail on Sunday is a tory paper ..... oh my god the end is nigh!, the anti-christ! run to the hills 3. Prince asked which newspaper gave away the most cd's in the UK - answer was Mail on Sunday, ok we'll use them. 4. You've just posted the most stupid and pathetic response i've ever seen on this forum, i'd give you more abuse but the last time i even called someone an idiot on this forum i got a warning. 3121

My parents shamefully buy it, not that they are tories, but the alternative Sunday red tops really are designed for the knuckle draggers of the UK. I think it's an awful scaremongering paper, but in it's favour it has some good quality, well written articles sometimes, so i kind of get the older generations liking for it.

Ah, so I presume you to be a Liberal Unionist. Were you born into what the Radical papers call the purple of commerce, or like myself rise from the ranks of aristocracy. I do not approve of anything that tampers with the national ignorance, ergo I hold Richard Littlejohn and Piers Moron in esteemed favour.

I'm a Metro reader, I don't know what that makes me apart from a cheapskate. If i had my way, i'd bring back the old bartering system and live in a commune. Then change my mind when i start to miss the joys of electricity. [Edited 3/22/10 9:20am]

2,900,000 of these would never have bought it had it been sitting on the new releases shelf in HMV.

It was a great stunt, he probably made more money in the UK through Planet Earth than any royalties he's ever received on any of his other releases and it gave him great visibility for the purpose of selling out the 21 shows at O2.
Quite ballsy really. | |

I think he may have burnt his bridges with a UK distributor with his Sunday Mail stunt.
Was Lotusflower ever officially released other than import copies in the UK? Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

He didn't burn any bridges - perhaps with Sony/Columbia, but it's not like they're the only label out there. Even they probably wouldn't say no if he wanted to release another product through them. |

And it's still a shit album. and a nasty, divisive, cruel paper. I was making a point about how many albums Prince shifted and you went on a political rant. The Mail is only a newspaper it has no bearing on government and its only as narrow minded as the Mirror (labour) the Guardian (socialist idiots) the Express (still talking about diana) the list goes on. Prince gave away a album in a paper, it sold shit loads, well done him, good move, fuck which paper it was in it was a clever stunt. Its not North Korea you're entitled to your opinion but i personally thought it was bollocks 3121

Prince is not a UK resident, how the hell is he supposed to know about the political agendas of a rag like The Daily Mail?
Besides, the days of Prince standing for liberal hedonism are long gone. Sadly The Mail is probably the paper which closest represents Prince these days.

I see. I will refer to the fact that I commented that the answer I gave was politically motivated - so, that the rant was political shouldn't have come as a surprise, whether you agree with it or not. I must, then, be one of those 'socialist idiots' who minds who people associate themselves with. If Prince went purely on numbers, fine. Ignorant, greedy, but fine. If I was choosing to put my name on a product and associate it with another product, I would be minded to check out the associate product and see whether or no I thought it was a good thing. The Mail is a bigoted, rabble-rousing, populist rag that dresses itself up as 'as near to a broadsheet as makes no difference'. Great, he 'sold' lots of albums. So what? There are many corny comparisons to make with artists associating themselves to 'best-selling' products in a bid to sell well, but I'll refrain. It disappointed me that Prince did it. Simple as that.
And, the 'so not true' comment? Really, politically Prince has leaned to the right - he may have made the oblique elephants/mules comments in Paisley Park, and has done wonderful work for charity in altruistic fashion, but his (political) lyrics have always smacked of GOP... ok, I'll give you Party Up... but what war was he on about? Answers on a postcard please...
