I have a question regarding "Call My Name" from the Musicology album. At around 3:12, right after the "never seen the moon look so lovely..." line, there is a little bass line that sounds strangely familiar to me.

It's been driving me crazy! Is that a reference to another song? I just can't place it!

No, I don't think so. It's just a bass fill that's being plucked or pulled on the strings which gives it a specific sound found on a lot of records.

It sounds a bit like the bass run from Prince's version of Nothing Compares 2 U and a bit like little bits of the bass to Diamonds & Pearls.

It's not a copy it's just in the same style maybe that's what you're thinking of

Chopingard, I think you might be onto something! The funny thing is that I thought it might have sounded like the "whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whooaoooo" from the family version of Nothing Compares 2 U, but when I cued it up, I was like "that's not quite it". Still, there was enough similarity that we both went to the same song! Coincidence? Maybe!!

To me, it would add more meaning to the line and to the song if he meant it as an intentional reference to Nothing Compares 2 U!

An unintentional subtle nod to Nothing Compares 2 U maybe but I think it's just a bass run. The song itself has a similar arrangement to NC2U so that's what you might be vibing on.
