And they are free to voice their like for his product just like those are free to voice their dislike. Whether people like it or not, Prince is a product. It is his music they are purchasing and they purchase it hoping it will be something they want to hear, not what Prince wants to hear. If Prince wants to make music simply for what he wants to hear, then he needs to keep it to himself for his personal use and not sell it. I personally like some music from The Carpenters but I would never play it a party I'm throwing because my guests wouldn't want to hear it. If I did play them at a party though, I would have no right to complain if the guests talked about it like a dog because I shouldn't have tried to feed them something they don't want in the first place. People don't know Prince personally and he doesn't know them either. But these silly remarks about "Prince ain't here to please you", I'm sorry but yes he is, he's selling a product.

He's selling a product, but it's art. Maybe the mindset that buying music is like buying a new lawnmower is what is problematic in the 1st place. You gonna contact the better business bureau because you didn't thought "Chocolate Box" should not have featured Q-Tip? Get real.

If you are gonna take it that far, what about all the Prince songs and bootlegs that people downloaded and didn't pay for. Is the customer always right?

Why do all this on a site dedicated to Prince? Because we all are either Prince fans presently or past Prince fans.

This is the point of my original post.

But if the subject of particular Prince music that they don't like comes up, they are free to tell the truth about how they feel about it. No one should lie about what they think about something. As for "just don't say anything at all about things you don't like", well, things never changed by people keeping their mouths shut and simply going along with the program.

I agree with this. However, is being a Prince fan really a "program"? Prince fandom is not like a political cause/religion or something. Sure, it inspires passion, but at the end of the day shouldn't it be fun?

I like prince.org a lot, and I enjoy seeing/reading what everyone else has to say. However, there is a fair amount of cynicism to wade through.

It swings both ways, perhaps the cynicism is needed to balance out the way out there uber-scary Prince stalkers floating around?

[Edited 2/19/10 19:17pm]

Of course it's for fun. It's just as much fun talking about something you don't like as it is talking about something you do like. And the stalkers make things fun too because they provide humor when things are getting dull. lol

Hell no, the customer is not always right. I worked in retail for nine years and customers will lie their asses off. However, they did have a right to voice their opinion and complaints and we as employees would be fired if we told them to leave if they didn't like it. Actually, some of the complaints made things fun and interesting on an otherwise boring day. lol

^ I'm an oldie (too) and I think I agrees more with Ernest than Skywalker, wink

Prince music was (used to be) brilliant, but it's not anymore. In the 2000's it has been pretty weak imo.

I'd actually rank "3121" as strong as his 80's and 90's stuff, and it only came out 4 years ago..

no no, I wish I could hear what you are hearing, Graf.Kid.

imo:

Musicology 7/10
3121 5/10
Planet Earth 5/10
Lotus/ MPLS 8/10

imo "3121" is weak, 2 or 3 good songs only,

a huge level below Prince's 1980's standard cry

When he stops experimenting (a word he hates, by the way), and starts just creating great music again, then I'm game. I love more than the 1984 Prince. The 90's were just as prolific with a multitude of material in a short amount of time.

Frankly, you're only as good as your last album, and Prince hasn't had a truly mind blowing, and incredible, album in 14 years. "But how can you say that?!" Because I can, that's why. I hold that truth to be self-evident, that not all Prince albums are created equally. Prince has dumbed down his albums musically and, frankly, lyrically. He's just preachy now. He's a pastor without a pulpit. He's his own million man march, and just a cuppa hun'ed people are showing up.

Prince in concert will always hatch a strong and positive reaction from people, myself included. It's his music, since being an alleged free man, that has softened his brain and our funkspectations.

However, with every album, I'm hopeful of something that will once again, make me sit up in my chair and say, "Now THAT is Prince!", whatever "Prince" is/was/will be.

So is the past a litmus test? Fuck yeah it is. People compare to Planet Earth to Musicology, albums that were only a few years apart. Is that holding Prince to his past because some believe PE wasn't nearly as great as Musicology? Prince has repeatedly, HIMSELF, said he was hearkening back to his past sound. He said it about Musicology, and he said it about MPLSound, yet there are fans like you who seem to forget that coming from Prince's lips, and point fingers at other fans who might actually expect Prince to keep his word.

Prince the star has fully taken over Prince the person. Or is it vice versa? Has the personal journey he's chosen to take upon himself only yoked the star of Prince into submission and mediocre music? There used to be a balance, but now - not so much. Prince has forgotten who is, all around. History repeats itself. Critics said he lost his funk in the 80's, and he "showed them". Critics are saying that yet again about him.....I'm just waiting for him to show them up, and prove them wrong.

Still waiting...

Next time you want to rag on Prince's past, you better not illustrate your point by using the poster of a concert where PRINCE played virtually nothing but 20+ year old songs.

i don't feel that way. i've loved his recent albums. planet earth was deeply funky, lotusflower rocks.

he has definitely changed, but i wouldn't say i prefer 'the old' prince. his new stuff is strong, just different. i wish he would play the new stuff live, at shows.

but he doesn't play new stuff, does he? in fact, for example, for many years now prince has been playing "thank you for letting me be myself again" and "everyday people" at just about every live event, every. single. show.

he has an amazing repertoire of songs from which to choose, songs that people would love to hear, and yet he chooses, (out of a limited number in his set), to include those two early 1970s songs again and again and again and again and again and again and again. confuse i mean, it's actually sorta funny in a clearchannel kind of way when you think about it. at least, i've come to see it so neutral

i mean, you said us fans "love him for his past, rejecting who he is in the present" but who is living in the past, exactly?* biggrin

*disclaimer: this fool still loves prince concerts, regardless of those two songs sigh big grin

In my opinion, it was somewhat courageous of Prince to be as explicit as he was in the past, however, that explicit side of Prince was surrounded by an entire body of expression that was Prince giving us his, "All." Prince naturally outgrew the necessity to phrase being a sexual person in some of the ways he has. I believe that the early 80's was a unique era in the music world. I don't ever believe humanity can return to an "era." An "era," is a part of our memory's history.

I am a fan that accepts Prince as a growing musican and spiritual being. Any one of us doesn't wish to be treated as the same person we were 30 years ago, or even who we were yesterday. Every day makes a difference in your life. cool

Why is this shit so hard for you sheep to understand? There is consistently so little life left in Prince's music these days, but we still hold out hope that it will return. His later stuff isn't so much bad as it is tepid. He set the bar pretty high for himself and we know he's got it in him to move us still. Its not about living in 1984 or any other such nonsense. Its about being excited with the music he makes today.

OK, so the argument seems to be this. Those of us as long time fans who dare to suggest for a minute that P. is putting out more filler than he used to simply cannot accept he has 'grown spiritually' and 'mpved on' from the WB days and we haven't. What sort of an argument is that....?

The point may just be that Prince himself is stuck in his ways, trying to recapture his youth (see poster/ photoshopped to hell and back) and appeal to the masses as a serious pop chart artist by becoming a follower of whoever is deemed trendy right now. (MPLSound/ 3121 anyone....).

What many of us would like to see ...yeah,yeah, 'our expectations': whatever rolleyes is Prince to just release what the hell he wants without pandering to trends in music - THAT was always the excitement and appeal during the WB years that he seems to have lost along the way.

Right. There are many people who are excited about the music he makes today. Just like in 1985 when all the Purple Rain trend jumpers left, there were still fans who liked Around the World in a Day. Not everyone is excited by the same things. Look around here, you have people exalting New Power Soul. Who am I to tell them they have poor taste?

Question is, if someone has been dissatisfied with Prince's output for 10 to 20 years plus, what is the motivation to still hang around the purple fan club?

1. Prince has always airbrushed/photoshopped his pictures/posters. That's nothing new.

2. To a certain extent, Prince has always taken what is trendy in music, and changed in into his own purple thing. Prince is chasing trends a hell of a lot less now than he was in 1991. Be honest, no one in popular music today is releasing an album that sounds like 3121. No one in popular music has a song like "3121", and a song like "Satisfied", and a song like "Fury" on the same album.

Very true. Quite a few months ago, the picture for the Musicology Tour at Regal Theaters was posted. When it's blown up to original size, you can see some very, VERY shitty Photoshop blurring on his forehead to get rid of the wrinkles. It was SUCH a crappy job, it was like a 10 year old did it. Even the picture posted is HIGHLY reworked.

Anyone who thinks Prince actually looks like those pictures is a fucking dumbass.

Ok, I take the point about the airbrushing. Perhaps the fact that he is now much older and that some prints make him look like a waxwork are what I feel a little uncomfortable with - o2 book anyone....

Noone sounds like him currently? The majority of RnB pop acts do. Different genres on the same album? Typically Prince but an automatically good album this does not make. But you really believe that noone has songs out that sound like the majority of 3121....i.e.'Incence and candles', 'BLABlessed...' I respectfully disagree. And I don't think it's as much them chasing him as the other way round.

Name an R&B act today that can put out an album that sounds like Lotusflow3r.

Sure, there are many pop/r&b/dance acts that Prince sounds like...because they sound like Prince. If anything, he is copying himself. Yeah, he does incorporate "current" sounds into his music, but that has ALWAYS been the case.

You made reference to 3121 - I was commenting on that. Lotusflow3r: I agree there are some real prince gems on there. Boom, Colonized Mind etc. Also IMO some turkeys - 77 beverly, love like jazz. Don't get me started on MPLS or Elixer.

Prince at his peak in the 80's, and during the post WB 90's, IMHO P.seemed to be releasing material quite distinct from pop mainstream. that's all I'm saying.

I enjoy the vast majority of what Prince releases. i'm just merely saying that, IMO, a lot of what Prince has released of late: especially that on 3131, MPLSound and Elixer sounds so similar to the mainstream RnB that it comes across to me as uninspired and devoid of any artistic growth.

I appreciate hat you have an opposing view. that's cool. Just an opinion that's all.

Which fans have rejected him? The man still sells out huge stadiums full of folks. Not accept him, please.

That being said, there are folks who wish for the 'old days'. I'm not one of them, but I get it, and it's not the fault of the fans.

I mean honestly, I'm not looking for the golden days of yore.
I love evolution and change.
The fans aren't stuck.
Prince has hit rewind and has gotten stuck, and the fans have gone backwards with him.
Check the lyrics, the musical arrangements, the hair, the young(er) chick hood ornaments. He hasn't left his glory days behind. If he'd leave all that ish for someone else and put on his grown man, maybe the fans would too. He's been wallowing in that purple-mystical-erospiritual-riddlemethis bucket for far too long. We've seen glimpses of Prince's evolutionary greatness before, but only glimpses, and for very brief periods of time.

Don't blame the fans. It's the fans that keep him in all those little flashy suits and regular relaxer touch ups.

I'm all for music by a new and improved Prince. That is, whenever he figures out who that is, shows up and straps on his gee-tar.

Okay, fair enough. What current R&B group has a song like "Fury" on their album? What current R&B group has a song as heavy in the funk as "3121"?

Prince at his peak in the 80's, and during the post WB 90's, IMHO P.seemed to be releasing material quite distinct from pop mainstream. that's all I'm saying.

During the post WB 90's? Do you feel as if Emancipation was more distinct from the pop mainstream than, say, 3121 or Musicology was/is?

I enjoy the vast majority of what Prince releases. i'm just merely saying that, IMO, a lot of what Prince has released of late: especially that on 3131, MPLSound and Elixer sounds so similar to the mainstream RnB that it comes across to me as uninspired and devoid of any artistic growth.

I guess I just disagree. 1st it's like this- what is mainstream R&B these days? Usher? Rihanna? Beyonce? John Legend? I don't think Musicology or 3121 sound like anything these artists would put out.

I appreciate hat you have an opposing view. that's cool. Just an opinion that's all.

Agreed. No worries jack.

i was thinking to myself, perhaps there should be an org for fans of the area circa "the eighties" and then one for those who dig all his stages

i also asked myself...is it possible to love & hate simultaneously
