I'm sticking by my selections. I had perfectly good personal reasons for picking the songs I did. I would maybe include $ as it seems to be pretty popular but really the point in making this thing was that I felt the other songs were really, really sub par. The 'Crimson and Clover' he does is one of the most limp sounding things I've heard come out of Prince ever and I would say the same about alot of the rest of that particular disc. I think MPLSound is actually the stronger of the two, but I just feel like alot of it sounds hokey. The instrumentals are great but the vocals sound.. I dunno... I guess hokey was the right word in the first place. I didn't add any Brian songs because we're talking about a Prince record here. Why he thinks it is ok to take advantage of his fans and heap this wad of garbage (Elixir) upon all of us who buy the record is beyond me. I understand she is his protege and all that, but I think falsely inflating her sales doesn't do anything to help her in the long run, and more importantly just pushes his fans further away from him and his music. As for the price, I have no complaints. It was a good deal in that sense and in fact, I would pay the same price for the single disc I described above and would probably even buy any singles that came from it with B-sides.

I really like your 30 second photo shop job! I kinda like the vibe of this set. I'm not crazy about "Chocolate Box" coming after "77 Beverly Park". It gives me the same jolt "Hey Valentina!" gives me after "Here". lol It's like you go from drifting off to Sweet La La Land and then it shakes you out of there. nutty but I totally love Lotusflow3r and MPLSound. Fun thread. I'm imagining the order I'd put the other songs you didn't include. CD hmmm
[Edited 2/18/10 6:55am]

That jolt was intentional. Besides, Chocolate Box is just kind of a jarring sounding song. Also, I would take Q-Tip out of the song for my version of the record. Don't get me wrong. I love Q-Tip. I just don't think he adds anything to this song, except some of that "hokey" quality I was talking about.

I respect ur opinion. I feel that if Elixer had been released through a real record company and she promoted it properly, people would appreciate that album more. I don't get the "hate" for Elixer that so many have. Especially when many here say they never have played it.

I just don't like the album much. The resentment and "hate" that goes around I think stems more from the fact that people were kind of forced into buying her record if they wanted the new Prince album. That's fucking rude. It's like if you went to a restaurant and ordered a steak, and then they brought you a steak and then the waiter sat there trying to cram a mcdonalds burger down your throat at the same time as you're trying to have your steak...
... that was a little convoluted but I think you'll see what I'm saying.

Honestly, I listen to every song on MPLSoUND and LOTUSFLOW3R, just hit the "Play" button on the MP3 player and let 'em roll. But, if I HAD to narrow it down to one 8-song album, it would be:

1. From the Lotus....
2. Boom
3. Colonized Mind
4. Dreamer
5. ....Back to the Lotus
6. Chocolate Box
7. Ol' Skool Company
8. No More Candy 4 U

Nothing from Elixer here. To be honest, I've loaded it on the MP3 player, but haven't listened to the first song from it yet.

what a meaningless an useless exercise. Prince released to good ablums at one time. No one is ever going to agree on any departure from what they are and all the opinions - uninforned and otherwise - dont mean squat to anyone else.

This is a pill I might have been able to swallow. Streamlined. Covers his strengths. And at the end of this record you might actually even set it back to the beginning and listen to it again.

Edit--> Also, think of how great alot of the songs I have ruthlessly cut sound live. These would be fantastic B-sides and non-album tracks, and all of us here at the org would have just LOVED talking about them at great length and discussing their various merits. They would at least have some mystery about them in that situation.
[Edited 2/17/10 22:38pm]

I'd say I think of "Ole School"(I don't get into it like many do), and especially "77 Beverly Park" as filler... oh and "Back to the Lotus"? That's ending FILLER (if you're in editing mode). I think stronger lead songs are "No more Candy" (so startlingly retro Dirty/Controversy and catchy) "Boom" (my friends asked who it was upon hearing it in the car because it sounded cool, and I agree!)"Elixer" (I think this song is really good, and Prince is lead vocals for half of it)... and even though it's a cover "Crimson and Clover" is always a single worthy tune.

Also keepers on my edit would be "Dance 4 Me", "Here"

so my personal 2009 album at the moment would be:

1. From The Lotus
2. Boom
3. Crimson and Clover
4. Colonized Mind
5. (There'll Never B) Another Like Me
6. Dance 4 Me
7. Feel Good, Feel Better, Feel Wonderful
8. Elixer
9. Here
10. No More Candy 4 U

Of course. We're just having fun with it but I would need all of Prince's songs so I would make it a Double cd with a bonus cd of sexy angel as feelers, I mean fillers. wink Here is my MPLSound set list:

1.DREAMER
2.CRIMSON AND CLOVER
3.4EVER
4.COLONIZED MIND
5.WALL OF BERLIN
6. $
7.NO MORE CANDY 4 U
8.DANCE 4 ME
9.U'RE GONNA C ME
1O. HERE

The two albums would never work as a single disc. The production values are too different. It would sound like a hot mess.

That's not actually true to my ears, and I am a professional musician who has been involved in multiple recording sessions in a variety of studios from basements to state-of-the-art facilities. I've also sat in on many many mastering sessions for lots of different types of recordings. I do have a trained ear. You would think they might be produced very differently, but I compiled a version of the album just like this and have been listening to it for a couple days now. Sounds fine. I don't hear any jarring differences. I would guess that they were mastered at the same time. They were meant to be listened to together as a double album after all.

I really liked the idea of the Funk album that was apparently planned for release at some point, if I were to condense the two I'd try and go for something along those lines, but I don't think the songs from either album work that well together.

$ might have worked on MPLSound and No More Candy might have worked on Lotus.

I think Turn Me loose would have been a great replacement for 4ever (not that I dislike 4ever I just think it's feels a bit out of place on Lotus, would have been better suited to Planet Earth.

Also Funk really should have been on Lotus.

So I'd keep Mplsound as it is and release Lotus with the following tracklist.

From The Lotus
Boom
Crimson And Clover
Colonized Mind
Feel Better Feel Good Feel Wonderful
Turn Me loose
$
Love Like Jazz
Wall Of Berlin
Dreamer
Funk
Something BIG Is Coming.
