This was a great time!Lots of singles and new stuff every week at local record stores.Lot of b-side and live boots hit the ground here.I really think Prince was making a comeback after the USA gave up on HIM after P.R.
But then came LOVESEXY and it all stopped----WAY TO AHEAD OF IT TIME.People did not care only the FANS.The showes were not full.

for a soundtrack he should have put a bit more quality in2 Batman, he should have included the Lovesexy band more

Yeah if he toured SOTT in the states, the next album would have been huge even if underground:Black Album

I've always liked this one

OUTTAKE: Dance With the Devil

Dance With The Devil
Intended for Batman, this dark eerie track utilizes a drum machine, piano, synth, and the voice of The Joker. The song is based on the scene where The Joker holds Vicki Vale hostage in Gotham's bell tower. Prince warns to be cautious of the devil's tricks. Some lyrics can be seen in the liner notes of the soundtrack.

Cunning liar, eternal fire
Demon clever, promise 4ever
The curious try and always die

Live in fear, the devil is near
Can U feel his breath? Pray 4 death
The curious try and always die

"U men point those search lights up on the tower right now - move, move!"

Have no Savior, have no faith
Never look 4 Heaven's gate
Devil's children, no love inside
There is a soul, but it has died

Devil's children, no love inside
There is a soul, but it has died
And it cries, and it cries.

CHORUS:
Dance with the devil in the pale moonlight
Put your arms around him and hold him tight
Give up 2 the feeling and don't try 2 fight
He wants your soul and he wants it 2night
Dance with the devil in the pale moonlight
Put your arms around him and hold him tight
Close your eyes 2 love and die

Dance with the devil in the pale moonlight {sampled till end}

"U know, without U I just wouldn't wanna go on"

CHORUS {x2}

Dance with the devil in the pale moonlight
Put your arms around him and hold him tight

"It's as though we were made 4 each other
Beauty and the Beast
Of course if anyone else calls U 'Beast'
I'll rip their lungs out"

Dance with the devil in the pale moonlight
Put your arms around him and hold him tight

yeah, the song the Future 4 me sums up the feel of that era, it had sort of a lonly introspective feel. the Future is my favorite, but it felt like(friends had left:Sheila Cat Boni, and that's the same feeling I got when I heard Sign o the Times and found out Bobby Lisa Wendy & Mark were gone

It ticks me off to no end that the BATMAN ANTHOLOGY on DVD and Blu-ray only has the truncated version of "Partyman" as a bonus feature. It's one of Prince's very best videos, and it's not commercially available anywhere else.

Batdance" was a last-minute replacement for a brooding track titled "Dance with the Devil", which Prince felt was too dark.[1] Incidentally, though "Dance with the Devil" remains unreleased, some of the lyrics appear on the album's liner notes.

"Batdance" is almost two songs in one—a chaotic, mechanical dance beat that changes gears into a slinky, funky groove before changing back for the song's conclusion. The track is an amalgam of many musical ideas floating around at the time. Elements from at least seven songs (some unreleased) were incorporated into "Batdance": "200 Balloons", "We Got the Power", "House in Order", "Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic" (later released on the album, Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic), "The Future", and "Electric Chair", as well as the 1966 "Batman Theme" by Neal Hefti. Some of these were mere snippets, and other segments showed up only in remixes of the track. The song was also loaded with dialog samples from the film.

The song's music video, directed by Albert Magnoli and choreographed by Barry Lather, featured dancers costumed as multiple Batmen, Jokers and Vicki Vales.[2] Prince appears both as himself, and as well as a costumed character in face paint known as "Gemini", with one side representing the Joker (evil), and the other, Batman (good). The Batmen and Jokers alternate dance sections, while Prince/Gemini sing the lyrics. Eventually the video ends with Gemini hitting a detonator, exploding an electric chair (referenced in the song), and Prince warning, "Stop" as the video abruptly ends. The video also features one Vicki Vale wearing a shirt with the words "All this and brains too", a reference to Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller, in which a female news presenter wears a top with the same slogan.

Gemini is Prince's astrological sign, and is a reference to the duality throughout his music. "Gemini" would also make an appearance in the "Partyman" video, but with the "Batman" half replaced by Prince's normal appearance.

continued

Only rarely did any genuine experimentation occur during the sessions. "Batdance," slated as the first single, was an intriguing collage of samples, jarringly different musical sections, and searing guitar work. The project's other major compositional effort was "Dance With the Devil," an eerie-sounding piece with Prince singing a descending minor-key melody over a drum-machine pattern. Unfortunately, he shelved the song and it remains unreleased.

Batman arrived in theaters in mid-June 1989 and quickly became one of the most successfl movies of all time, grossing $40 million on its opening weekend and eventually taking in $250 million at the box office...

Critics response to the album, however, was mixed. "It's hard to avoid the suspicion that some of the songs on Batman were already sitting around Paisley Park as part of Prince's vast outpouring of music," wrote John Parales in Rolling Stone. David Sinclair of the London Times observed that "there is a distinctly throwaway quality to much of this material."

The 9 song album contains 3 high-quality pieces: the idiosyncratic Batdance, along with the Future and Electric Chair, 2 songs Prince recorded before being recruited by Burton to work on the soundtrack, and neither having any thematic relationship to the movie. The Future blends a propulsive dance beat with a New Age-like synth figure; "Electric Chair mixes funk and heavy metal and features a compelling multi-tracked chorus.

The remainder of the album is at best passable. The Arms of Orion is schmaltzy, and Partyman, Lemon Crush & Trust are by the numbers songs with perfunctory (and highly similar) drum-machine patterns as well as anemic melodies. The album as a whole, while hardly devoid of indications of Prince's talent, pales next to his 1980's classics. The artistic depth of Parade, Sign O' the Times, and even Lovesexy left many of Prince's fans and critical supporters unprepared for a work with so little inspiration or craft.

chapter 11 Fantastic p 156 At first, though, it seemed Prince had made a shrewd decision by tapping a Hollywood insider as his manager. Shortly after assuming his new job, Magnoli was contracted by the acclaimed director Tim Burton, who was shooting the movie Batman with Jack Nicholson in the role of the Joker. While assembling a rough cut, Nicholson and Burton placed two Prince songs -1999 & Baby, I'm A Star- into scenes as background music. Pleased wih the effect, they hatched the idea of asking Prince for new material to add to the film's soundtrack.

Prince flew with Magnoli to the movie's production site in London in January 1989 and was mesmerized by Burton's elaborate and haunting vision of Gotham City, Burton requested just two songs, since the composer Danny Elfman had been hired for the soundtrack. But Prince, suddenly inspired about the project, offered an entire album. Warner Bros. Pictures, emboldened by wild audience response to early trailers for Batman, decided that the film could sustain two soundtrack records-one a traditional score by Elfman and the other a collection of Prince songs.
-Possessed

Immediately after wrapping up the Lovesexy tour, Prince returned to Paisley Park adn set to work on Batman. Becoming fascinated with the characters(and especially the Joker), he sampled portions of the dialogue and synced his songs directly to scenes. Prince seemed convinced that his contributions would permeate the entire film. "This is going to be my movie!" he exclaimed to studio engineer Femi Jiya.

Prince created the whole album virtually on his own, a rare exception being a visit from Sheena Easton, who dueted on the ballad "The Arms of Orion." But for the most part, his labors were marked more by haste than by inspiration; on many of the songs, he quickly programmed drumbeats and then layered instruments with little attention to structure or melody. Some previously recorded numbers were revamped to fit the movie, such as "Anna Waiting" (about Anna Garcia), which morphed into Vicki Waiting after the character Vicki Vale. -Possessed

Goodness the other day I was watching some old Batman episodes on Boomerang (Nothing was on, but I love Batman anyway so...) & of course the joker was in it. I was interested in his outfit & actually wanted to buy one like it and wear it. Now I'm remembered of him in Batdance & I actually just might follow through with this one... cool

Love the album and played the hell out of it. At the time, it was the two greatest things in the world together for me: Batman and Prince. However, in retrospect its not a strong point, with Lemon Crush and Vicki Waiting feeling totally like throw-aways and while a good song, Scandalous seeming a bit akin to the dirty stepchild of Adore.

Does anyone know if there is a circulating copy of "Anna Waiting"? Does anyone have the lyrics for it? I have always liked "Vickie Waiting" but that second "Joker" verse feels very forced and/or "tacked on" to the song. I never felt it fit in with the rest of an otherwise classic bitter-sweet track.

Lyrics...

"Vicki Waiting"

The phone rings - it's Vicki callin'
She wants me 2 come 2 the crib
U see, conversation's better than being lonely
So I try my best 2 ad lib
I tell her the joke about the woman
Who asked her lover - "Why is your organ so small?"
He replied, "I didn't know I was playin' in a cathedral"
Vicki didn't laugh at all

This is where she wants 2 be
And I am what she wants 2 see
I've never known a love so sweet
But still I keep Vicki waiting
Alright

All is well in Gotham City
The sound of terror is all U hear
Sometime a pistol take the place of her body
Sometimes her body's here
U see, when crime is your only love
All that matters - the present, the here and now
People, people - whatever floats this Joker's boat
Is whatever this Joker will bang

CHORUS:
This is where she wants 2 be (I...)
I am what she wants 2 see
Never known a love so sweet
Still I keep Vicki waiting

Oh yeah
Wait on, mama

Talk of children still frightens me
Is my character enough 2 be? (Never)
One that deserves a copy made? (Never, never)
This I one day, I hope 2 see
Until then she's held at bay by my animal-like persistence
Or maybe she's just 2 proud 2 say
That fate (fate) brought us 2gether
And this is where she wants 2 stay

CHORUS {x2}
(Oh)
(Oh yeah)
(Ah yeah, yeah, yeah)

All is well in Gotham Town (This is where she wants 2 be)
I am what she wants 2 see
I've never known a love so sweet
But still I keep Vicki...
Still I keep Vicki...
Still I keep Vicki waiting, oh yeah (Waiting)
Uh-huh, uh-huh
Still I keep Vicki...
Still I keep Vicki waiting

This is where she wants 2 be
