This might be a sacrilege, but... I think the version of Just My Imagination from the Palace Aftershow might be as good as the one from Small Club.
I know I'm late to the party...but I just converted that aftershow this morning. (I've had it for awhile, but the flacs have just been languishing on my hard drive.) Anyhoo...now that I've had my Valentine's Day eargasm, I have to say...damn! Hear me out. While I don't think the guitar solo is structured quite as nicely as the Small Club (that one has a slightly better "build" IMO), it is every bit its equal in terms of intensity and overall "out of body experience-ness." And that little bit of Noon Rendezvous he folds in at the end is just pure royal icing on an already sumptuous cake. And when he says, "Seven bucks, please" at the end, I have to If you think that I'm a fool who'll go for any line. Honey, put down all your money (on him). He wins, every time. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

There's Noon Rendezvous in it? Damn, I gotta hear that.
Be back soon to let you know what I think.

The solo is great.
The audio quality isn't up to Small Club. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

The audio quality isn't up to Small Club. No, it isn't. But the version I have seems to have been cleaned up pretty well. It's clear that it isn't a soundboard, but it still sounds pretty good. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Audience COMMENT Released in September 2008 within days of the Sabotage release 'Lovesexy USA' which also contains this aftershow, there really is no comparison between the two versions. This is a completely different audience recording which has sat unheard for 20 years, and is a joy to behold from start to finish. I can't decide whether to rate it as EX- or VG+ as there are long passages of the recording which really are superbly clear with Prince sounding inches away from the person recording. My indecision lies with the audible female audience members screaming loudly for the opening few songs, then intermittently throughout the show, along with a fair few gents too, it has to be said. Some slight wavering on occasion, along with the recording sounding rather "light", and a very small, almost unnoticeable drop-out during 'Just My Imagination' are my only other points of note, and other than these relatively minor quibbles, this is really rather sexy indeed. So sexy that it would make my Top 3 releases of 2008 without question or hesitation. The aftershow was orgasmic before, but hearing it in this quality is like hearing a whole new show, and I don't mind admitting I pee'd myself slightly on the closing 'Take This Beat' funkatron. What a show this is, and what a night this must have been. The opening 'Positivity' is a little short for my tastes (I love hearing the "call People magazine, Rolling Stone.." sung live, which is alas not performed here), however the extended 'Eye No' more than makes up for it. The traditional 'Wade In The Water' follows, which in turn segues into a rare aftershow performance of 'God Is Alive'. Boni takes centre stage for the mid-section of the show with Prince blending in with the band, outwith a few guitar solo's, and the band take a short break after 'Cold Sweat'. They return with a stunning 'Just My Imagination' (I imagine the cassette needed flipping during the song as there is a slight cut around 10 minutes into the song) and from here on the show really goes to a whole new level and there aren't enough superlatives to describe the ensuing funk of the closing two songs. He's yelping, screaming and rapping, his guitar is wailing, and all the while Levi's bass is rumbling and Sheila E isn't missing a beat - this really is legendary stuff, and 20+ minutes which everyone should have the pleasure of hearing. The recording ends with the PA announcer asking the crowd to chant for Prince's return, however it becomes obvious he won't be returning, and Michael Jackson blasts out of the sound system I really can't praise this release highly enough. Sure, I would have loved it to have had less audience intrusion in places, but they really don't degrade it massively, and certainly don't dampen my enjoyment of one of the finest aftershows of the 1980's. Lastly, I don't normally pass comment on fan released artwork too much, however an unheard recording of this quality really deserved to be packaged in something a little more befitting of it's excellence. Just My Imagination 9. Superfunkycalifragisexy (including Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic) 10. Take This Beat COMMENT A really rather poor quality recording of yet another excellent aftershow from the US leg of the Lovesexy tour. The recording is very muted, hollow and unclear. So much so that I can only assume the concealed recording equipment is being covered by something - hence the sound really struggling to get through. It's a shame, because if you put aside this, there is very little audible audience noise out with some chatter on occasion, and hadn't the recording been so weak, this could have been excellent. But it isn't. Rather shitty quality aside, the show is superb and whilst it mainly follows the theme of other US aftershows from the tour, it has it's moments and flashes of greatness. The show begins with 'Pink Cashmere' played over the PA prior to Prince taking to the stage with the usual show-opener of 'Positivity'. The first surprise of the night is a rare outing of 'Eye No' during an aftershow, and whilst the bare bones of the track is there, the performance is vastly different to the main Lovesexy concert version. A brief portion of 'Wade In The Water' serves as an intro for 'God Is Alive' before the show is slowed down with a stunning 'The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker', as usual containing a portion of Madhouse 'Four'. Boni takes center stage for the next two tracks, again featuring nothing out of the ordinary with Prince returning for a smooth 'Just My Imagination'. The undoubted highlight is the extended 10 minute frantic jam of 'Superfunky' which is mainly instrumental beginning with a "Cat, where you at?" chant and including a portion of 'Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic'. The show is brought to a close with a loose jam incorporating the lyrics of the 'Take This Beat' portion of 'I Wish U Heaven' over an improvised groove with numerous stop/starts. All that said, the content is perhaps secondary for the majority of people due to the quality of the recording as it can be rather hard work listening to it. It's not a poor recording, but it's not far from it. The 'Superfunky' performance is circulating as an audience filmed video recording on 'Mess Wit' Yo' Mind'. The show has since been released in 2008 on the fan release 'Hollywood Lovesexy - The Aftershow' taken from a different source recording in far, far better quality, which makes this release obsolete. ©TheDataBank.org If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I'm a little confused to what show exactly the reference here is to. I don't have my Prince live stuff on my HD right now, as I temporarily removed them in order to free up some much needed space.
In any case, I think the one he did in Paris ('87) is the best one I've heard. If my memory serves me correct, it's when he also did Red House there. It was released as "He's Got The Look", although there might be other releases as well. The sound quality isn't terribly good though..

Wait - video?! JUST MY IMAGINATION SUPERFUNKYCALIFRAGISEXY (Including RAVE UN2 THE JOY FANTASTIC) TAKE THIS BEAT JAM The DVD is watchable, but it leaves a lot to be desired considering the material. It is shot from the left hand side of the balcony in a small club, so it is actually quite close. You can only see the very front of the stage where Prince is on the left side and Cat and Boni are on the right. Also on this same DVD is a performance of Still Would Stand All Time at Grosse Freiheit 36, Hamburg 31Aug88. The pics is sometimes grainy but it is professionally shot and Prince is sitting at the piano throughout, with black rimmed glasses on looking a little nerdy. TRUE BLUE
