I think his version of Nothing Compares 2 U does. The chords were all enhanced on Sinead's arrangement.

There's a fantastic search engine out called Google, check it out sometime.

Unfortunately your efforts to send me elsewhere have failed, for it's not what I asked. I know WTF cadence is, thank you.

His posts make no sense.

Nope. Still waiting for you to explain your thread, instead of it being a bitchfest.

So you're wanting the excessive posts asking you AGAIN to explain yourself? You could have spent this time giving better examples to whatever it is you're excited about.

An authentic cadence is a V to I.

To use another poster's song example:

Starfish and Coffee is in the key of A.
It features an authentic cadence in the progression throughout:

A D E A
F#m Bm E A

The E to the A is a perfect cadence, as E is the V chord in the key of A.

An authenic cadence, or any cadence for that matter, provides an overall feeling of "relief" from the "tension" caused by other chords. It makes the phrase feel complete, whole. For two chords to be considered a cadence, they generally must come at the end of a phrase, or in the case of this thread, the end of the song.

Thank you. I thought it was simple enough.

This thread is proof that most Prince fans are incredibly ignorant about musical theory and have no idea what they're talking about when they criticize his music. I mean the fact that people can enjoy Emancipation and not this new song is just sad.

Are you saying that because I have no clue what any of this means that I'm not allowed to like what I like and not like what I don't like?

You don't need to be able to read music in the traditional sense to understand music theory - people always get the two confused. As long as you have a good ear, know the names of the notes, and be able to recognise intervals (the distance between 2 notes) and simple chords (different notes played at the same time), then you're well on your way to understanding how theory works. 'Reading' music is simply the ability to play a prescribed order of notes. It's like the difference between reading someone else's words, and knowing how to talk on your own...

Prince can't read music, but he does have a workable knowledge of theory. He might not know the terminology of a "perfect authentic cadence", but I'm sure if you showed him on a guitar or keyboard, he'd understand exactly what you're talking about!

I was thinking about this with regard to musicians that can't read music...so in essence, what you're saying is that, music theory can become intuitive if you play long enough, or have a gift for music?

cause and effect ends in a perfect cadence. i get relief when it switches from playing in its key to me turning it off before i hear another note. heck it even begins in a perfect cadence if i just dont hit the play button .. so much more relieving if i dont force myself to listen to it at all. yes its that perfect.

Of course Prince knows what a cadence is, and anybody doubting that has no clue whatsoever. And of course each and every single time somebody like Prince uses a perfect cadence to end a song or a part of a song structure, he does it 100% purposely, and anybody doubting that again has no clue.

Do you also think he goes from major to minor in certain songs randomly? And when he calls out "B flat" to the band, what's that then? Part of the tourette syndrome that some guys were talking about again recently?? Hell...

All that doesn't have much to do with reading music, and of course it doesn't have anything to do with the ability to appreciate the finished product as a consumer/listener.

but is he doing it because he's saying "I'm going to use a perfect cadence to end this song"? I doubt it. I'd say it's more an intuitive thing that he's either come across independently or has heard in other works.
