I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man and When You Were Mine

What kind of pop/rock songs do you think influenced Prince on those two songs (the most pop/rock of his output)? There's definitely some Cars influence and according to wikipedia, he wrote "When You Were Mine" after listening to John Lennon.

So what specific songs (or other songs in that style) do you think inspired the style of those ones?

Good question. Not sure about the John Lennon reference via Wiki, but these two songs are masterpieces of pop. I wouldn't argue about P's Cars influences. He was a sponge in the early day.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

john lennon, really. don't hear the influence in when u were mine. i think P always looks to show his versatility. the 1 u wanna C has been called a hybrid of those 2 songs. unless he says specifically about what inspires him, we can only speculate. dinner with delores is coming to mind right now for some reason

The Morning After fits right in there too. Perfect pop.

One version I've heard of this story is that Prince wrote it in his hotel room after listening to John Lennons music. The other version, which i believe came from Prince in an interview (post emancipation era) was that he wrote it in his hotel room after returning from a Lennon concert (in NYC i think but not 100%)

Interesting. I've been racking my tiny little brain trying to think of a Lennon song that fits When U Were Mine's mold. The Ballad Of John & Yoko comes to mind, but it's a Beatles tune.

I hear some Cars influence on When you were mine, especially in the synths. A touch of Elvis Costello too.

I could never take the place of your man has a slight Bruce Springsteen / John Mellencamp-vibe, especially in the live-versions.

I think that it was more 'beatles' inspired than Lennons solo work. Not that i am an expert in either of those areas. The early Beatles comparisons i can hear clearly - particularly the repeated harmonies "I guess i was blind (So Bliiiind-ee-indddd). Also, the twangy, simplistic, pop driven guitar. The simple melody - the use of space mid-sentence "when you were mine..... i gave you all of my money" compared to "Oh yeah i'll....tell you something... i think you'll understand"

I think it conjures up 'I wanna hold your hand', perhaps. Check out the percussive claps in the background.

By no stretch a 'rip-off'. I can definately hear influences and say 'colouring' from these kinda tracks.

Yeah I'm listening to Springsteen's "Two Hearts" off The River and even though Prince has said he's not crazy about the Boss' music, I wouldn't be surprised if he picked up some things from him.

As far as I recall he wrote it in a hotel room in Florida after John Lennon was murdered.

I gotcha. I still don't see any connection musically, lyrically or inspirationally. Especially if it was after John Lennon was killed. shrug

Other songs that fit into this category are Take Me With U and Raspberry Beret - perfect pop songs.

As someone who is OBSESSED with The Beatles and most things related.... I do not see When You Were Mine having any kind of John Lennon flavor at all, unless you are thinking of songs in which he paid homage to rock n roll standards.

When You Were Mine is like a Bruce Springsteen song in the Lovesexy Live versions...

sweething

With When You Were Mine, it does sound like the tradition of the Cars and Rod Stewart early 80s.

I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man is straight up rockNroll.

Crimson and Clover. dove P tends to shift like a time capsule, lives ahead in future and reflects often to past. Clever lil bug that Prince is.

Really? Shame, cos I really like them both. 'The Holy River' definitely has more than a little bit of Bruce's 'The River' about it.

I always think of think of stuff like WYWM being Prince's nod to New Wave. And then, apparently, he was influenced by Devo (who I've never actually heard) and liked the way they'd mixed the synths into that sound. Can definitely hear a lot of that in the early 80s albums.

Not too sure about those songs, but you can definatley hear beatles influence in his early work. For example the stabbing synth hits he uses in "I wanna be Your lover", Why you wanna treat me so bad", "Dirty Mind" & others is very similar to the stabbing guitar in "Getting Better" by the beatles biggrin

Yep. I hear a lot of Devo and B52s synth pop in his early stuff. I was deep into New Wave back then. That's one of the reasons that I started following Prince's music.
