Robin Quivers of Howard Stern claims of Prince's live shows "He just plays records for you now, too" I'm listening to Monday's episode of the Stern show and Robin Quivers, who used to be my favorite member of the show, finally said something so fucking insane, she's lost what little respect I had left for her. Unless it's true, but it isn't.
First off, it's interesting to note that when Prince's book came out and he gave a live show in NY for a select audience in a hotel (you know how Prince does...always for the select audience), Stern ranted and raved (and sadly, had people believe) that Prince couldn't play with the lights on because he was eccentric. However, most concerts don't have the audience lit (was he expecting that?) and I wouldn't be shocked if Howard's eyes are fucking terrible! I heard rumors that it was a very small room/venue and the light would be too bright and blinding if it was right on him. I know to take a lot of what Stern says with a grain of salt, but even years later he still has not let it go! Now comes this insane claim from Robin! During a talk about the Who's halftime show (which they stated was possibly partially lip synced), Prince's name came up. Howard said he would have thought Prince could do a great show, but proved he couldn't (I don't know about that....IMHO, just not the best, most diverse track listing from a man with a great catalog). Then Robin said (and I'm rewinding to do the whole thing). To put things in perceptive, I'm listening now and she forgot the Stones performed and then claimed it was a year when they did it with Cristina Aquerlia (which she is likely confusing with the movie....early Alzheimers?). Anyway, back to the topic. She said of Prince live, "He's not a good performer anymore. I saw him when he used to perform and he was great....HE PLAYS RECORDS FOR YOU NOW, TOO!". Did I miss something? Is she losing her mind? I don't doubt it! I mean, she says very wrong and crazy things, but this one struck me. It might even be an old topic OR maybe she is right (although I think if she was, I would have heard about it). Sorry if this is a bit jarring to read, though, but I had to vent. I just started thinking that possibly the bullshit (not as exaggeration for comedy, but just dumb bullshit) is going off the charts without Artie in the studio. He's heavily missed and hopefully will return soon (although there is absolutely no talk of it). Thanks

95% of everything they say either doesn't make sense, is complete bullshite, or its so juvenile and stupid one wonders why they let it come out of their mouths. Change it one more time..

There are orgers (orger Purplecam, I believe I remember orger pplrain was there also, as well as other orgers) who attended the daytime performance at the Gensevoort Hotel in NYC during the first show that day/night of October 2008. I was at the evening aftershow, not the earlier show, But those who attended during the day show, when Howard was there, will be able to tell you about the lighting.
I was at the evening performance and there wasn't that much light in the stage area where Prince performed, and the room was dimly lit enough for a concert performance, but I was able to see the show just fine, and those who attended that night, in my opinion, didn't seem to have much of a problem seeing Prince perform, because they were too busy enjoying the show. I don't know how it was for folks in back of the room, but it looked like everyone was having a good time. [Edited 2/9/10 13:14pm]

Robin has claimed to have seen Prince live whenever he comes to town (although this is a somewhat recent revelation). This is the first time I've heard him complain about him. As for Stern, it might have been that he was STILL complaining about the "book" show and Gary jumped in about the Superbowl performance being "awful". I didn't think there was any validity to what Robin said, but I disagree with "95% of what they say" being total bullshit. It's one thing to have opinions, which I don't always agree with, but their claims on Prince are insanely misguided. Yes, the show is a combination of frank honesty as well as hyper exaggeration for comic effect, but anytime they complain about Prince, it seems to be often not funny, or fun and least of all, honest.

[Edited 2/9/10 13:14pm] I've brought up the concert and people here have stated while it was possibly dark, it was not that bad. Howard is an insane complain but to complain about a free Prince show because the lightening isn't perfect is insane. Howard thought everyone was crazy for not agreeing with him but in fact, I assume most were embarrassed by his absurd over reaction (he said he stormed out with his wife, who has had to put up with this kind of crap in the past....like when Howard walked out of a dinner party while the main course was served). And while I hate to keep posting about the subject since most reactions seem to be "Who cares?", I think of it as one of the most slanderous things I've ever heard out of the show for someone with a bit of sense (not Sal, Richard or a Wack Packer). It's fine to have opinions or over exaggerate or even make funny implications, but that was really messed up, don't you think? [Edited 2/9/10 14:54pm]

I loves me some Howard. Robin is fine in small doses (and thankfully, that's all she is allowed). She does talk out of her ass sometimes and so does Howard, but the show's often riotously funny humor is built on the notion of finding faults in people - true or false as it may be. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I've never understood Howard Stern's schtick. I just can't get into personalities that make a living off of other people's struggles and/or hard work, whether parody or supposed fact. Geesh, get a real life and create something positive.

[Edited 2/9/10 13:14pm] I remember Stern talk about this soon after the gig, and I think his issue was that, as a serious guitarist (haha), he felt it necessary to be able to see Prince's fingers to study his guitar technique. So since there wasn't enough light for him to study the fingering from where he was standing, he got pissed. Funny, but I'm pretty sure this was the impetus of his complaint about the show.

Not sure what you mean by that. Howard is not only a commentator. He creates a lot of stuff as well. His interviews are often very strong. I know Robin was just talking out of her ass and some people think that they are just a bunch of assholes anyway, but I think the comment is really shocking. Prince lipsynching? This was Monday's show and I wonder if she got any shit for it later from real Prince fam. It was a very small comment and the show mostly dealt with the possibility of Stern being an "American Idol" judge (he neither confirmed nor denied talks). He came up with outrageous ideas for the show that would never happen.

I love Howard Stern as well. I don't get Sirius radio, so I can no longer listen to his show; I miss it. Last year I had a rental car with Sirius and I was able to listen to the show and it was great! I abdicated the throne in Ithaca, but now I am...

HoWeird Who? Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

The conversation at that time was about who could do a great Superbowl act but the lip syncing and possible guitar mimming (which a caller showed a dispute to) was discussed first. Guess she didn't totally lose her mind.
