Does anyone here like Purple Rain more than UTCM? Every Prince fan I know favors Under the Cherry Moon over Purple Rain...and I absolutely agree with them...most hardcore Prince "friends" can recite that movie verbatim. If anyone disagrees that UTCM is the better flick come in here so I can SLAP THE WAVES OUT CHO HEAD!!!!! [Edited 2/11/10 22:27pm]

Is this a bait thread? 'Cause you crazy. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Quote from a review I found.....
Ultimately, 'Under the Cherry Moon' is a classy, tasteful, entertaining, musical extravagansa which only Prince could have pulled off. In retrospect, it is not in any way a bad film, and is possibly (dare I say it?) better than 'Purple Rain' - the music is just as good, and the acting far better! If only the outcome of Christopher and Mary's romance could have been destined for happiness, not tragedy...still, as Prince sings in 'Sometimes it Snows in April' 'Sometimes, life ain't always the way...'

Maybe it's because it left a stamp on me at the tender age of 14, but I'll always prefer Purple Rain... I am but mad north-northwest

I like them both but have to say that PR rocks !!!!! P is just fantastic (except for the dodgy kissing)

I like the tender gay love story between Christopher and Tricky in UTCM more than the violent domestic abuse love between the Kid and Apollonia in PR. And UTCM is filled with incredibly talented actors (Prince and Jerome being two of the notable exceptions to that). But those actors are fighting against a horrible script and direction, so, ultimately, PR wins.

purple rain was "looslely" based on his life, but UTCM is more of a romantic comedy type of movie. so i loved them both [Edited 2/12/10 6:11am] the good life is one inspired by love and guided by knowledge ~ Bertrand Russel

Efan - I think parts of the script work quite well - namely the comedic scenes between Christopher / Tricky / Mary - but agree that the overall flow of the script and storyline isn't exactly great !
re Direction - I do recall one of those talented actors, Steven Berkoff, actually stating that Prince was a good director !! Perhaps we sometimes automatically think that because it's Prince and he's a musician, his direction of a film must be horrible???

UTCM was a first glimpse at how awful Graffiti Bridge should turn out.
Plus UTCM has wet dreams of Purple Rain. Do you favor Planet Earth over Lovesexy, too?

I dont know anybody who enjoyed UTCM in its heyday (if it even had one). Only in time has it become endearing because of the period and ubnreleased music myths and realities. Purple rain was loved imediately and always.

UTCM could have been just as good if there were some elements in PR that were incorporated in UTCM
I like them both, 2 very different types of films, He didn't capitalise on the protege/Revolution

Both movies are good.
I would pick: 1) Purple Rain; and as a 2nd... 2) UTCM Ohh purple joy oh purple bliss oh purple rapture! REAL MUSIC by REAL MUSICIANS - Prince "I kind of wish there was a reason for Prince to make the site crash more" ~~ Ben |

Man, I don't kno'...life's a bitch...
I'd have to choose PR over UTCM even though I was one of those Prince Fams who liked UTCM then as well as now. As one who is not embarrassed by what Prince has done or does, I do remember most Prince fans I knew at the time being quite embarrassed by UTCM, which became the last straw for many who didn't dig ATWIAD. As one who tries to separate his personal tastes from objective artistic standards, while I see glaring flaws in UTCM, I think that it is still a film that if remade has great possibility to make powerful statements about love, the struggle of man to balance his physical and metaphysical elements, and issues of race and class. While most feel that Prince is off is Jehovah's Witness Rocker, I'd love to see a more mature and racially aware Prince tackle this subject/film today. Of course, I might be disappointed, but the film--as a script/blueprint--does have great possibilities. This final comment may send many running to the hills, but even then I would have loved to have seen someone like Spike Lee get his hands on that script. Of course, Prince, during that time, would have never allowed himself to be directed by Lee, but I think that all of the nuances and possibilities of the script could have been achieved. I still watch UTCM periodically and enjoy it, but PR is executed more effectively, articulating all of its themes and achieving its potential more clearly than UTCM.

[Edited 2/11/10 22:27pm] I actually like Purple Rain more so then U.T.C.M. I like the backdrop of Mpls, reminds me of when I was living in the Mid-West myself (Chicago). Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

BIG fan of PR...always have been. It IS dated, but its still effective for the stage performances alone. Plus I like the dark story with his parents and Apples. Then of course you have Apples breasts.
UTCM as a movie is ok and of course, great music, but there are some parts that are flat out embarrassing (give em the bella lagosi look...and that whole bath tub scene).

After not having seen UTCM in years, I fired it up the other day via the Netflix streaming service. Every time my wife walked in the room there seemed to be one of those "embarrassing moments" happening on the screen. I am pretty sure she got sick of me saying "baby, I swear this makes more sense in context." (I am not sure I even believed myself when I was saying it...) I can't wait until I revisit Graffiti Bridge. UTCM is a goofy movie. I actually enjoy it for what it is, but I certainly don't put it in the same league as PR. Don't get me wrong: PR has it's share of goofy moments too - but they have always seemed to be a less contrived and more sincere form of "goofy" moment (if that makes any sense...). I bought the trilogy when WB put out the Purple Rain 20th Anniversary Edition DVD. Under The Cherry Moon and Graffiti Bridge are still hermetically sealed. I never had a desire to watch those two again. I would rather watch Purple Rain again for the 200th time, Sign O The Times or Batman. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Our local Best Buy was selling Graffiti Bridge with a special pair of "handling tongs & gloves." Make sure you have them handy if you ever "break the seal". It's almost like there is an "event horizon" for stupidity - once you fall below that line, you're too stupid to know you're stupid.
