I have to agree that 98.7kissfm and wbls in NYC has always supported his music. I know that 98.7 was basically the only station playing "Call Me" from 2004 - early 2007 on a daily basis like it was religion. It would be very sad to know that what you say is true, about his treating of personnel from black radio stations/mags/media, when so many of his African-American fans have supported him over the years and have travelled from state-to-state to see his shows. I did hear Tavis say that Prince has always shown interest in the SOBU conferences and he, Tavis, Dr. Cornel West, get together and discuss these issues. Not to mention he practically gave credit to Dick Gregory in his song "Dreamer" as well as an honor to Dr. MLK in that song. Jackson, are you sure you're not holding a grudge yourself because of the rick james situation, whatever that was about, and because of what his so-called "handlers" did regarding giveaway tickets for shows back then? I've been to Prince shows in 2006 -2008 and have seen a large, African-American presence at his shows. He surely didn't seem to have a problem with that, and he did not treat them any different than other fans, so seriously Jackson, why the negativity towards Prince? Have you been to any of his shows during the Muscology tour, and when he was promoting a singer named "Tamar?" or his 3121 Vegas shows? I mean he's given discount tickets, from his previous and current official sites, to his fans for many of his shows, and free tickets to fans who won contests on a couple of unofficial fan sites in the past, so you can't say he doesn't do giveaways. I mean are you holding a personal grudge against him from the past, because of his former "handlers?" Just sounds like you have a grudge you can't seem to shake off. [Edited 2/18/10 9:26am]

When he did the Image awards i wanted to hurl, these people dont want repsect you, they have to and most of them "real"brotha's in the audiance are dancing because they want to stay close to the pussy. I respect both sides, but i'm biased against all of those cats, all of the so called black radio community who claimed to have made him and jumped the fuck off the boat the minute ATWIAD dropped. Prince's audiance has always been diverse racially, sexual orientation, politically and otherwise and the black folks that hung are usually black folks considered alternative and weird by their peers. I get upset when he skrews us, but i dont give a damn when he blows off the traditional R&B set, because a lot of them dont love our boy no damned way-so fuck em. Do Charity your way Prince, dont let the BET crowd get to you, "they" despite what they think didnt make you and your too damned big for em to break you. When you get that Super Bowl gig, eh hem Tom Joyner cant talk enough shit to fuck with your money homey -holla.
Some of what you stated is a bunch of bullsh*t. Are the white radio stations playing any of Prince's current material? No, they are playing his classics. They don't play his r&b sides either, so why not attack them? Don't they jump ship when it comes to his classic r&b material? The Black radio stations play Prince's classics, mostly the r&b classics, because of course, just like many white radio stations, they play to a particular demographic looking for a specific sound. But in the past, I have also heard "Raspberry Beret" and and "Pop Life" played on some of the black radio stations, that some don't consider r&b, so if you are going to throw stones, don't stop midway, let's talk about how the white radio stations don't play his current or r&b material as well. Also, many Blacks over the years have always listened to alternative music, because in many places there were very few black radio stations, so music from white artists, especially in the 60s and 70s were mostly played on the radio. Groups like the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, 3 Dog Night, the Average White Band, Jose Feliciano, Herb Alpert, Santana, etc., just to name a few, had many Black fans. Blacks were into alternative music by default so-to-speak. I had no problem with Prince performing on BET, he is a long-time respected artist within the black community and there was nothing wrong with him performing on BET. I'm focusing on back in the day, and a pronounced exodus by his Black listeners the minute he broadened his musical base. I will respond to your post, but I'm not going to go round and round about this with you. First of all, I'm not interested in how black you are when you look in the mirror or how you define your blackness, nor do I give a damn if you watch BET and don't support Tyler Perry movies. None of that takes a damn thing off my table. Secondly, your skin color doesn't define your intelligence or the character of your personality, so please save the "This is how black I am" speech for someone else. You contradict yourself because you're doing the same thing you're complaining that "some" black people do. When you talk about "US" and "WE, are you not being monolithic in your thinking? As far as Prince owing a specific group of fans anything, who said he did? and why would all his black fans, (since you lumped all of them in one bowl of soup, as though all blacks think the same, yet point fingers at the black radio stations for doing that) believe Prince owes them something? That makes no sense. One makes a personal decision to support an artist of their choice on their own, nobody holds a gun to their heads, and forces them to support any artist dude, to the point where they feel the artist(s) owe them anything other than "thank you for your support" and that's it. So that BS you're ranting about doesn't fly over well, because you cannot speak for the music tastes of all Blacks or make a generalized assumption of how they feel about an artist. Secondly, how on earth can you say that White people have never made fun of Prince, and only say Black people have? Are you kidding me dude?? You can't be serious. Have you read many of the insulting/offensive comments that have been on this very site? Not to mention other unofficial sites and on the internet, media, radio, tv? The man has had to deal with all kinds of insults/offensive remarks coming from people and fans from all races over the years, so don't put all that BS blame on Black people or his Black fans. No one said that Prince has to do anything for any specific part of his fan base, so slow your row dude. Tom is not the only one whom Prince decided not to do business with as far as performances, shows or concerts, as many have heard about in the past. [Edited 2/18/10 8:55am]

Who said he was strictly a funk artist? Anyone that had those old albums were fully aware of rock tracks like "Bambi", "I'm Yours", "Jack U Off", etc. and nobody was complaining. Everyone was fully aware that he made rock and it was the black stations, not the white stations, that were playing "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" from way back in the day and people were loving it. If white people were so much more "diverse" than black people, then it wouldn't have taken them so long to discover him beginning with "Little Red Corvette", they would have already known who he was if they were so "diverse" because they would have venutured further out into R&B radio instead of just listening to pop/radio. That shit works both ways you know. White Radio stations and Black ones are corporate entities and in this day and age Prince isnt a hit maker no matter the genre so hearing something current from him is rare.
That's true. Current stations of any genre or race ain't worth a damn. I'm focusing on back in the day, and a pronounced exodus by his Black listeners the minute he broadened his musical base. Many black people (and loads of white people also for that matter) didn't abandon him in the mid 1980s for doing more pop/rock. They dropped him because he changed his sound that they were used to hearing from him and they have every right to. Just because Prince may be so "diverse" does not mean that people of any race has to change their tastes to suit his. If they don't like what he's making, they simply don't buy it and they have every right to stop buying it. People either like something or they don't. I've heard white comedians joke about him also. I dont watch much BET, because i dont need them to define my blackness, i have a damned mirror and freedom is being able to define it for myself.
Well, of course not. When you watch BET, you are watching what a bunch of rich white corporations want you to watch. BET hasn't been shit for years. When Prince feels strongly enough to do something for US he should do so, but when he dont he shouldnt waste a minute of sleep over having his black card pulled by the likes of Tom Joyner.Calling out a fellow blackman over specific contractual issues?-throwing out figures? who is the real man in this matter?

Tom is not the only one whom Prince decided not to do business with as far as performances, shows or concerts, as many have heard about in the past And Dreamshaman said..... No retractions, the above mentioned babble is my perspective and i stand by every word. Please name the white comedians who devoted a segment of their routine talking shit about prince (ala Foxx, Belamy) and then turned around and tried to park their ass in the front row. Yes i will say as a black listener when i listen to Black radio or watch BET i feel the messege is that i should feel a certain way about many topics that embrace a monolithic approach to life. When i say Us, and WE i am talking about the reaction i witnessed from black listeners i knew who were quick to abandon prince post 85.And lastly, because i dont want to offend you any further with the length of my posting my point is Prince dont owe African American tastemakers like Joyner who cater to a segment of his listening audiance who are at best arbitrary in their appreciation of his work anything. He dont owe us shit, and we (as diverse as we are) pretty much make up his loyal foundation of audience. So, i hope that was short enough for you- and i'm not really interested in what anyone here assumes my intelligence (or lack thereof) to be. Like you stated so eloquently-it takes nothing off of my table. I have my opinion and i took the opportunity to state it.Thanks for posting [Edited 2/18/10 8:55am] [Edited 2/24/10 1:52am] [b][Edited 2/24/10 1:53am] [Edited 2/24/10 1:56am]

A cruise ship concert???
If I were Prince I wouldn't do it all. I think he said a million dollars just to make Tom Joyner go away. Looks like it worked.

He did a pretty long interview with Donnie Simpson on DC radio during the Musicology tour (or it may have been One Night Alone Tour). Anyway... this pretty much negates the point you are trying to make. Prince doesn't do many interviews anyway, so don't make it seem like he's always on the radio gabbing about a new album with everyone but the black media. Furthermore, in relation to the concert tickets, if these jocks would actually play the music he is promoting while they have their hands out for concert tickets instead of mainly stuff from 25-30 years ago they may get more preferential treatment with regard to the number of tickets they get. After all that is the primary point of giving away promo concert tickets -- to give the stations incentive to promote the concert and current product the artist is selling. Finally, as I stated many posts ago Prince's relationship with the media in general is not a warm and fluffy one, and never has been. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Why do they think he would just simply say ok because it's Tom Joyner - hardest working man in black radio? They haven't supported Prince's music much at all. The only song I've heard on the air recently is Better With Time and then a sprinkling of old stuff from 100 years ago or Adore. Prince is a living legend. Pay his price or call Ne Yo. [Edited 2/24/10 8:29am] Thank You!!!, like a stated earlier would he even step to mike like that if he were alive?, and then use it as fodder for an already abitrary listening audience. Prince is cool with Tavis, and i'm sure he likes Tom too, but he is not in either mans pocket-and you can say the same for white radio personalities as well. Hell, Stern is on his jock one month, talking shit the next, but prince is consisitent-he dont give a shit either way. [Edited 2/24/10 8:36am]

I remember Prince on the radio with 987kissfm staff, during the Musicology 2004 tour in NYC, and Prince even spoke to fans that called the station that day, when he was promoting his Musicology tour. That station played "Call Me" religiously, everyday for more than 2 years after Musicology came out. If I'm not mistaken, the station also had a contest going to win tickets to those shows in July 2004. I do believe that station also had a contest for fans to win tickets to the show or win a cd. I can't tell you how to feel about Prince, because it seems you have personal issues with him that won't be resolved on this site, nor will trying to make the statement that Prince doesn't care for his Black fan base, force those fans to reject him, based on what you are stating here, about the staff at black radio stations/black media being denied "freebies" or long-length interviews from Prince. Yet Prince was recently interviewed by Tavis last year, which was televised, and he also performed a concert after the 2009, State of the Black Union Conference, for members and many of Prince's fans, were also given access to buying tickets for that event as well. Tavis also made a statement at that event, which was televised, stating how Prince has always shown interest and concern for the black community, and interest in the discussions that took place during the SOBU conferences each year. He also mentioned how he and Prince talk to one another on the phone for hours, regarding the discussions that takes place at these conferences. I guess it's no secret as well that Prince contributes to many charities, although that information is not usually publicized. Also, there have been times when Prince and his team, got together with some of the unofficial Prince fan sites, such as this one, and held contests for fans to win free tickets to some of Prince's performances, Not to mention, at various times during his upcoming shows, he's offered discount tickets for his fans, on his official sites, and first dibs to many of his shows, before tickets went on sale to the general public. So the man has given away a lot of free tickets and other goodies to fans during his career. [Edited 2/24/10 9:16am]

daPrettyman said: TJ has been upset a while about P not doing the cruise. He should know that Prince is not your typical act. I don't think a million dollars is that much for Prince to ask.
If P did the cruise, Tom would sell out in a heartbeat. He would have all kinds of fans from around the world flying to the Caribbean (or wherever it is going to be) just to see the show. Tom should know that. Not to mention, Tom has never had a multiple Grammy winner, a Golden Globe Winner, an Academy Award winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. He's used to acts like Maze, SOS Band, Gap Band, Teena Marie, etc. I'm not dissing these artists, but they haven't achieved the statutes and credentials that P has. If he wants to go after someone, he should try to get Jermaine Jackson and Janet Jackson on the same show. That would be a treat. lol iknw right Why does there have to be a soundcheck? I don't have a songcheck. You don't have a clothescheck.

i dont have a personal issue with prince. i had a good conversation with him about funk music during a soundcheck but then that was when he was in a good mood. i just dont like the way he treats black jocks. as for the record they have supported all his release since he left warners. check out billboard mag and see how well his cds perform on the r&b charts as oppose to the top 40 charts. donnie simpson and tavis smilely had to jump thru hoops to get him to talk to them. i known for a fact that he does not treat white jocks that way and you known why he wouldnt eiether. perfect example his 79 slot on dick clark show where he put four finger up dick clark face when he was trying to talk to him..i though that after hat he was finish but he manange to move foward, now can you see prince holding up four finger in don cornelius face when he trying to talk to him, man he would get any play from black radio if he did that. you see he didnt do his show right. i been on all his tour except for dirty mind controversy, and 1999, my first was fire it up and then i reconnected with him thru purple rain thru billy sparks because he need help in putting that tour togther. this is when i saw his black fan base and white fanbase grow further and further apart. i heard steve fargnoli telling prince that they want to promote him to the white record buying public and the white mainstream media. i was livid because that was a racist attitude to take to a group that loves his music. prince did not try to fight this racist mentality so he went along with the whole thing. so my point to all of you is the way he is treating tom joyner is no suprises.

(In response to the bolded part of your post) Well, obviously it was about making money, and trying to promote a black artist to a crossover audience to pull in that fan base and their money. Keep in mind, Prince was very young at that time, so he may not have seen it the way you saw it, because he was the one being promoted. I don't see it as a racist attitude or move by Steve, but moreso, business;trying to promote a Black artist to a white audience, doesn't necessarily means his black fan base was denied, because the black fan base was already there, Steve just had to get more of a crossover audience to sell the movie, reel in a large audience, and not just from one demographic. Steve took advantage of Prince's "look", because he was able to pass for "biracial" and Steve used that image, to attract white fans at that time. In the movie, they used a white actress to play his mother, to make the movie a bit interesting, and keep a mystery around Prince's race. It was clever move, because it kept many fans interested, especially when there's a mystique surrounding the image. The only thing is that it mislead many white fans into believing Prince's real mother was actually white, when in fact she was not a white woman. The discussion on Prince's race, has also caused some division among some fans on some unofficial sites, and this has been discussed at his former official site as well, because many who didn't know his real mother was a black woman, were surprised, because they believed the lie that was sold to them in the Purple Rain movie about his mother. But those that are aware his mother was a Black woman, usually let those fans know the real deal, and explain the various complexions of black families in this country. The one thing Black people have to remember is that we do not own Prince. He is an international artist, and that needs to be respected. An artist doesn't sell out because they chose to go international. I remember when Diana Ross left the Supremes, and went solo, some folks called her a sell out, because she started out with a major, black fan base, until she obtained her fame, and most of her songs were more on a pop basis, moreso r&b. Now no disrespect to you about how you feel Prince treats some black djs/promoters/black media, you have the right to feel the way you choose, we're all fans just fans here, trying to enjoy and discuss music/performances and s our own concert experiences. No one really knows what goes on behind closed doors when he's doing business deals with people, we can only speculate, which doesn't make it fact. I just think that you come off very disgruntled, because he turned down one of your friends, Tom to be exact, and now you're spouting on on an unofficial Prince fansite to others that he treats all black djs/promoters bad, when in fact is that really fair to make such an accusation or generalized assumption, when you are not there all the time, when he has any of these type discussions or requests from black djs/promoters/black media? It's hard not think you have an agenda, and that is why you're saying these things about him on this site. I'm sure whatever was discussed between Prince and Tom will be water under the bridge and forgotten. [Edited 2/24/10 16:41pm]

Prince is no angel for sure but lets not act like he has been all chummy-chummy with the media (black or white) over the course of his career. He has always been loathe to do inverviews and such from day one regardless of who it was that was trying to interview him. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
