I still point this out:
CJ did NOT quote Tom Joyner. She quoted someone who said they heard this on the Tom Joyner show. Well, has anyone confirmed that Tom Joyner actually said what CJ reported? I'm mean, I know that's supposed to be CJ's job, but she's been proven to be completely useless, so I would not be surprised if Joyner never said what CJ reported. . [Edited 2/14/10 11:05am]

Prince has his own distinct Charity style, which i am sure Mr. Joyner is aware of. Prince, no matter how dilusioned we think he is about his standing in the music industry is very aware. Since 2004 he's very shrewdly cultivated an elevated status as legendary genuis/best live performer in the world and trust me he remembers when he couldnt make such commands. Joyner knows perception is reality and he knows that although we love those old school acts on his boat there aint nothing but decisions and perceptions that seperate them from prince-not sales. Prince cant be seen on no damn old school boat, for a myriad of reasons and outpricing his services is a nice way of saying what Joyner should have already known. In Boxing, when a fighter of status outprices himself in a proposed bout its a way of saying he's either afraid or considers the challengers ability to put asses in the seats unacceptable.Joyner is actually insulting prince, i mean come on dawg you helped cultivate the legend now you wanna ask him to a damn boat-to (dont get it twisted) glorify you?. Charity is one thing, but charity with self promotion is another and i dont think that's princes style. Would Joyner step to Mike (RIP) with such an offer?, of course not!! well guess what..Prince may not be bigger but damnit he's on that level and you'd think a fellow brotha would respect it.Prince's whole track record is a study in being black, but not wanting to be boxed in to the limitations that distinct R&B acts put themselves in commercially and artistically. He is not hostile towards the core African American fanbase he attracted early on, but he knows they can be dismissive at the first hint of experimentation. This boat of so called loyalist-they aint like me, these are R&B folks who jumped off his boat as soon as they didnt get the funk and called me a white boy for staying so to hell with them. Tom Joyner can have his demo, but he cant bully Prince, because those same listeners werent asked to respect our boy; they didnt want to, he MADE them, you know beat em over the head with his genuis, to kiss ass now? when he has his own charitable works and way of going about shit is silly.

Good points. The bottom line is that Prince is one of contemporary music's preeminent live performers. He is capable of selling out huge arenas nationwide (Musicology) and it is primary source of his income as an independant artist. He doesn't have guaranteed big label money. He is still producing new creative works of art. Why would he tour with the nostalgia boat that is not up to his status? If anything, damage could be done to the perception of him as a live draw.

People are writing entire essays defending Prince over this?
I heard Prince decline Tom's offer with my own ears in '04. Prince said, no thanks because he heard what goes on on those cruises, LOL! If he asked Tom for 1m, it was another way of declining the invitation because he doesn't want the gig...simple as that. I seldom listen to TJMS because it's too much cackling for me early in the morning but why would I think any less of Tom or Prince due to a minor dispute? If Tom is unhappy he has a right to say so just as Prince has a right to choose where he performs. Tom's cruise extremely popular and successful for a good cause that almost no one else pays attention to. It also gives exposure to some very talented and deserving artists that the industry largely ignores such as... Frankie Beverly and Maze Ledisi Ohio Players Babyface Smokey Robinson After 7 Mike Phillips Mint Condition Anthony Hamilton Chaka Kahn Johnny Gill John Legend Erykah Badu Just to name a few. These acts are the people his audience wants to see and I'm grateful to Tom for showing them some love without regard to what the mainstream approves of. People will see more talent on this one cruise than you'll hear on most radio in a whole damn year! http://www.blackamericawe...nment.html People don't have to like what Tom said, but to be dismissive of all his efforts over the years by implying that the Fantasic Voyage is just a "love boat" with substandard entertainment is trifling and wrong. Prince has chosen a different approach for his charitable activities and I applaud both of them for doing their thing even though they don't use the same methods. So that's MY damn essay...where the hell is the objectivity around here? Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

I have to agree with you that Tom's cruise sells out every year, and he does pay attention to artists that the industry ignores completely. However, I still don't see any reason to make a public announcement that Prince asked for 1 million to do the cruise, and Tom wasn't exactly happy about that. I'm sure there's other artists that didn't agree to come on board on do the cruise. Now I don't know what "goes on" on those cruises, as you have specified, but I look at this as a business deal that just isn't going to happen, so Tom should just take it for what it is, move on, and promote those artists who will gladly perform on the cruise. Why not shine light on those artists that you mentioned the industry ignores, in which some of them may be performing on his cruise, instead of making a special announcement about a business deal he knew wasn't going to happen since 2004? No milk was spilled from it, and life goes on, and so will TJ's cruise. That's all I have to add to that Babynoz.

There are definitely worse things said on this site about Prince, than I've read anywhere else to be honest, and this is suppose to be a fan community that bases itself around the musician Prince or it would not go by the artist's name, whether the name of the site, is "initial-capped" or not, it is still mainly about the artist/musician Prince. Constructive criticism of an artist's work is one thing, as you don't have to like every song an artist/musician releases, that would unrealistic not to, as we all have "individual" tastes in music, but some folks criticize him on issues that goes beyond personal, as though they have a say in the man's personal life, when they don't. Many don't know how to separate the "artist/musician/performer" on stage from the human being with a personal life off stage. Secondly, I guess Prince has his reasons for not choosing to perform on the cruise, but I believe Tom admires Prince so much as an artist, that he just really wanted to get him to perform there, whether some of us agree or not on TJ putting the amount of money P asked for on blast. I also agree with you that Tom promotes those artists that the industry doesn't honor anymore, which is quite sad, as most of them are responsible for so much of that good/real music from back in the day. I stand by earlier comments, with no offense to mr. joyner. The entertainment field is the perception field and Prince has always (even in down years) been protective of his image (mystery, etc.) and he raely allowed himself to be lumped in with a collective of artist even for charity. Good for Tom, that line-up is great and i would see them all but i like my Prince singular, stand alone and yes a little stuck up lol. They dont call him his Royal Badness for nothing lol.Regulate Prince, continue to dictate how you are percieved, and therefor valued because once you start doin shit like this the same people who applaud you for it will call it a Love Boat!.

It's perfectly understandable that Prince is wary of lending his name to events where he has limited control of what takes place and I have no problem with that. This minor beef is a tempest in a teapot that will work itself out eventually. beef edit [Edited 2/15/10 9:16am] I hear you. Many are quick to dismiss many of those same artists you listed, that Prince himself I bet admire, because he is about real music, and many of those artists came from the same genre he came from. Besides, who the hell cares if some label Tom's cruise a Love Boat. So what, TJ's cruises have always sold out and successful. I don't like some of the nonsense TJ has on his radio show, but I can't disrespect the man for supporting many of these real artists, instead of the manufactured BS some call music today. I bet if Prince did a cruise suddenly it would be okay to call it a "love boat". It amazes me the nonsense some folks come up with to try and separate Prince and put him on some pedestal, it seems Prince himself wouldn't want to be on. [Edited 2/15/10 9:28am]

nyse said: he is worth it
Not saying he isn't. He simply doesn't want this particular gig so he priced himself out of range because he didn't want to flat out say no, and I'm sure he didn't expect Tom to mention it, that's all. On the other hand, we know for a fact that he donated his fee for the State of the Black Union gig because Tavis said so. Unlike Tom, Tavis is a close friend that Prince feels comfortable working with...simple as that. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

dreamshaman32 said: I stand by earlier comments, with no offense to mr.
People whined like hell when he did American Idol and the Vegas gigs...so what? My only beef is with this "hand wringing" and "weeping and knashing of teeth" each and every time something even slightly less than flattering is said about Prince no matter how mild. We don't have to rip apart other talented artists or Tom Joyner's entire enterprise over such a trivial matter, do we? Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.
