In a nut shell it is about cynthia rose, who is a special needs child. She dresses weird and can apparently only count to 20. When asked what she had for breakfast she gives a weird answer, but if you look in her lunch box she was telling the truth. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

It's all in the story, and based on a real person Susannah knew, I believe.

yeah, of coerce that topic i linked to (WHICH IS CLOSED NOW) seemed to spend more time time on what the correct term is ('*Mentally Retarded' is used in some states as a measure of an IQ below 70) than on the song. *sometimes used alone sometimes used along with other conditions. But it is an official diagnosis by a incensed diagnostician (Not necessarily a MD) "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

I'm not sure of the literal inspiration for the song, however I interpret the song as Cynthia having inspiration for breakfast.
I love the line..."Sometimes I wonder if the match was in her lunchbox." So Cute. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

I love the line..."Sometimes I wonder if the match was in her lunchbox." So Cute. Sometimes I wondered if the mates were in her lunchbox . Cute indeed. The story of this song is quite familiar and well known. It was a childhood school mate of Susannah who was "gifted", or mentally challenged. Even Prince said as much in one of the L40A Q&A's that was printed (and recently posted here). [Edited 2/8/10 12:47pm]

Prince explains it quite concisely in his interview right here: http://prince.org/msg/7/3...sg_7236316 If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.
