GOD... Hello to all,
When you guys first heard Prince's song God, did you feel the vibe was spooky like in the song, "There's others here with us", or just plan strange? I have always liked the song, but you got to admit, that song will never be sung during Sunday morning church service...

Depends which version you're talking about. Love the instrumental. The vocal - not so much. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

The vocal version is what the thread is about. I think the vocal version of God sums up Prince's early music best...beautifulstrange. I remember when I first heard the song back in 84" when I was 12 and thinking WTF and being drawn to the song at the same time. The intsrumental version is very seductive, actually I perfer it over the vocal...great baby making music!

The instrumental is great fucking music. The vocal is just "what the fuck" music. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

So I have decided that I like who squeaked better than who screamed I wonder If he would ever change it or sing that? I think it would be a lovely lyric change...

yeah it's kind of creepy.
I love both versions, the short vocal and the 8 minutes ext. instrumental version. Prince 4Ever.

I actually like both versions of God.I think people get freak out by all the weird noises in the vocal version and do not pay attention to the unique interpretation of Prince's adoration for God!

LOL so true right! Hey he was probably getting the Holy Ghost singing the song [Edited 1/10/10 16:23pm] Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

Wake up Children... dance the dance electric... Who screamed??? Was it you?? I was always like... AAAAAhhhhh!!!!! Very creepy tune. Sounds like ghosts and haunting Halloween music. But I love it now! The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

I found the lyrics and the music way too simple and uninteresting. I absolutely love the instrumental version though.

I've always like this song
powerful vocals and it has that spooky smokey dark feel most of the Purple Rain music has First time I heard this was at night right after I came home from buying the PR single sorta proceeds in similar fashion to FREE[1999] I love who it's connected with the Dance Electric [Edited 1/11/10 7:48am]

It's got the highest note in it that I've ever heard Prince reach, and I was SO impressed by the vocals in that recording.
I took the tape into my physics class one day and was playing it to anyone that would listen. I seem to recall that high note getting alot of attention since I had the volume up a bit too high. Oh to be a fly in the recording studio when he was making that - up there with the end of 'The Beautiful Ones' or 'Temptation' IMO. "I'm much too hot to be cool"

That's why I love it, it's so different from anything found in a Sunday hymnal. (It would be more difficult to sing as the star spangle banner). I guess that's why I love all his religious songs, they are original and purely his, and if he feels like screaming he screams!! Not the message, the polished presentation, instrumentations and slow funeral-like tempo. We need more songs like this one from Prince that presses some buttons, avante-garde, eclectic genre, energized and fresh. Yummy.

I think the genius of this song is that, Prince made two completely different versions of this song and each version brings about a different energy. Great song!

it didn't remind me of others here with us cuz i hadn't even heard of that yet . the hits/the b-sides was one of the first few princey joints i bought . was burnt i couldn't get the b-sides by itself at first cuz i had most of the first 2 cds' songs already . well worth it though. just for that cd and the insert and whatnot . one of my favorite discs to listen to still, all them songs kick ass . i was like with all the birdcall type noises initially, but now i love playing it in the car or wherever just to mimic them . good stuff . the instrumental version though too ...forget about it For all time I am with you, you are with me.
