Janie Hendrix interview, including mention of Prince

Hi, folks -

Great interview with Janine Hendrix, President/CEO of Experience Hendrix, about the upcoming Jimi Hendrix re-masters. She mentions that at once point Prince was interested in recording a Jimi covers CDs. Not much more info than that, but if you're a fan of Jimi's music this article is a great read.

If anyone was to do a cover I'd say Prince or Lenny Kravitz should be who would do it. Thank for the link.

According to a bio I read, Electric Gypsy, Jimi has at least two children; a girl named Tamika, conceived just before he became famous, and a boy, whose name I can't recall, who was born in Sweden in the late 60's. To my understanding, he was aware of them both but wasn't involved in their lives.

That was the rumor and part of the reason I went to Woodstock in '99.

Have there been many covers? It’s hard to beat a Jimi Hendrix performance.

Yeah, but John Mayer does Jimi. Sheryl Crow has recorded Jimi. Paul McCartney and, obviously Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton have recorded his songs. There’s been Robert Randolph (and the Family Band). There was a tribute album (“Stone Free: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix” in 1993). Prince wanted to do a full album on Jimi.

I remember this being mentioned a few years ago. Nice to see it confirmed.

Well there is "Crimson and Clover" mixed with "Wild Thing" on Lotus...

Come to think of it, nearly every guitar lick on that disc sounds like a cover of Jimi to me.

Thank you.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

True. But the Wild Thing bit was a Hendrix nod.

True neither are original Hendrix tracks, but if I remember correct, Jimi did an amazing performance of Wild Thing at the Monterrey Pop Festival.

And Prince's play on Crimson and Clover is dead on that performance.

Prince has played 'Villanova Junction' at a few aftershows(Last aftershow of the O2 run for example) - which Hendrix did at Woodstock - it's probably the best known version of the Hendrix tune, as it wasn't on any of the albums released in his lifetime - i'd say it's a safe bet Prince has seen a recording of the Hendrix Woodstock performance!

Nope. The Wild Ones recorded it in 1965. The Troggs covered it in 1966.

But I think you missed my point.

If it exists or if there's plans for it, I'd love to hear it.

Prince's performance of "Spanish Castle Magic" at Montreux back in July is my favorite Jimi cover he's done so far.
