The Greatest Romance ever sold (opinions)?

So just finished watching the music video to (the greatest romance) Ive always loved this song. yes I know i'm a bad fan (Ive never seen the video till just now)

I truly loved everything about it "P" looks great and I really dont care for most of the "Rave" era pictures and the song itself the lyrics are quite beautiful...

Anybody else have love for this song? and if you haven't seen the music video which i'm sure you all have ( do you love it?) I cant believe I had never seen it...

Well anyway here are some pics I believe are from it....

I tried to find some still clips but couldnt so i hope these are right..

You are not the worst fan ever--I am! I'm trying to play catch up after not listening or seeing him for 15 years! I like this song, haven't seen the video--I will check it out and let you know--playing catch up with some live CDs from P's past! Enjoy the music and post how you feel seeing and hearing for the first time! wink

I think that's where it ended. Everything after Rave was an improvment on the previous few years.

Greatest Romance was just a bit dull.

I don't know why Clive Davis picked this dull song to be the first single from Rave shrug A better choice would have been "So Far,So Pleased" or "Baby Knows".

I believe "So Far, So Pleased" ran into problems with Gwen Stefani's label. Unfortunately, it was by far is the most hit friendly song on the album. This album, like any P album, had some highlights, but I don't think P ever bought into the collaboration concept.

Not really a fan of The Greatest Romance, although it has its moments that I like.

Plus, I have no idea what the song is about. None. I consider the song to be indecipherable.

I don't know, but the name itself could be about Adam and Eve as "the greatest romance that's ever been sold" - The Bible. He's comparing his relationship with Mayte to Adam and Eve ("what was the real reason that Adam never left Eve"). Maybe I'm wrong lol

It's obvious that Clive Davis convinced Prince to go the "Santana route" and do a bunch of collaborations.

Really DISliked this song from the get go and still do to this day. Very few P songs I can say that about. This is one of the reasons I don't like Rave...

The single release suffered from the missing video... it took month and month after the cd-release, before the video was released in early 2000,

I don't know who was to blame for that mess, if the video had been released at the same time as the cd-single, I am sure TGRES would had been at least a top 20 hit... maybe even top 10.

Again I love this song. love2

"The Greatest Romance..." is a beautiful song. I'm gonna paint today and listen to "Rave."

I like how Prince poses the question: "What was the real reason that Adam never left Eve...(Not what U think, what U believe)

The story of Adam and Eve is a beautiful story although "The Fall of Mankind." was due to their disobedience. With any story that we know of there is an antagonist. There would have been no way to explain love without examples that are the furthest from love.
Adam & Eve's Love is eternal as well as them being 4given. From the beginning as the Author of Life, God would have known that Jesus would save the world from our sins...Adam & Eve were the first to Love, the first to sin, and the first to be 4given.

This is what I believe. cool

Like I said: I love TGRES, but I don't like those songs you guys are mentioning: "So Far So Pleased" or "Baby Knows",

- there you have it, Prince... it is impossible for him to please us all.

"The Greatest Romance" reminds me of a mix between "7" and "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World", 2 classic Prince songs.

Nice video.

Yeah, nice story but doesn't really answer the question, although I guess if you're religious it might an otherwise dull song a little more interesting.

The Jason Nevins mix is about as much as I can handle. It's rather perfunctory, but better than any of the other versions at least.

weak song. plastic, soulless production and dull, uninteresting melody. Terrible choice for 1st single from Rave.

The material was there for that album to be a huge success, but it was botched through 1) bad single choice, 2) terrible overall album sequence, and 3) hideous cover art.

My favorite verse

"Your body was designed 2 respond 2 mine
In spite of your desire 2 mold me"
And in the middle of it all -
We kiss and like rain (like rain) we fall into ...

Just so wow!

(but i'm gonna post all the lyrics:)

The greatest romance that’s ever been sold

So what do U know, U and me
Finally face 2 face
Checking each other up and down
In all of the obvious places
Was there ever a reason 4 us 2 be apart?
The air that fills up this room says, "not hardly"
So this is where U end, and U and I begin ...
(That‘s where U and I, U and I begin)
The greatest romance that’s ever been sold
The greatest romance that’s ever been sold

Baby, baby
Now your mind is open
2 poetry seldom heard
Ur heart has never been broken
Until U’ve heard these words:
"Your body was designed 2 respond 2 mine
In spite of your desire 2 mold me"
And in the middle of it all -
We kiss and like rain (like rain) we fall into ...

The greatest romance that’s ever been sold
The greatest romance that’s ever been sold

Oh, I know U can feel me,know that U can dance
But what do you know about the greatest romance?
Not what U think, but what U believe
What was the real reason that Adam never left Eve?
And if the truth sounds like a memory
Then U know it was meant to be (meant 2 be), meant 2 be
Leave your inhibitions behind come on, come on, and see
So this is where U end (this is where U end)
And U and I begin ... (U-hu)

The greatest romance that’s ever been sold
The greatest romance that’s ever been sold

I know U can feel, I know that U can dance
But what do you know about the greatest romance?
(The greatest romance ...)
Not what U think, but what U believe
Can U tell me the reason (reason) that Adam never left Eve?
(The greatest (greatest) romance (romance) ...)
Listen 2 me
(... that’s ever been sold)

U brought me
The grapes from the vine, yes U did
(The greatest romance ...)
Can I talk 2 U
(... that’s ever been sold)
Listen
U help me 2 remember the secrets of time
And U - U - U, U offer me your love, your love, your love
So divine
And in return, girl, in return I will surrender
Oh yeah, I will surrender, oh yes, I will
