If you cant tell the difference, youre no Prince fan. "Automatic" = struggling musician trying to make an impact in music "Chocolate Box" = a rich 50+ year old musician relaxing and doing his own thing. Very nicely put!!! He definately accomplished the impact he was trying for. And he most definately deserves to relax and do whatever he chooses to do. The man is magnificent!! The two songs that say it all for me would be 1. Controversy...which he wanted and did create. Yes, the questions, What am I? Who am I? What do I belive? LOL...I love that song, seems to be telling people that he really doesn't care what they think. All that really should matter is the music. You like it...or you don't. 2. There'll Never B Another Like Me...because when he says that about himself it is so very true. Sort of like he's telling people, I am what I am and it's good, you know it, you like it, now deal with it.

Do you think the majority of people that go see Bruce Springsteen are there to hear his new material??? His music has been exactly the same for years. Don't give me that bullshit Nice try. C for effort. D- for reading comprehension and assumption. I was responding to the poster who said Prince hates and is separating himself from his past. This is clearly not the case, as evidenced by his live show being nothing but a romp through the 80's. I don't blame him one bit for playing the hits live. People pay good money to hear Purple Rain, so go ahead and play it. You're not going to fill out the O2 arena playing 17 Days and Mountains. This of course also leads to the indisputable fact that his live show has become a stale, middle aged affair. So goes showbiz. Right. So that's why all his performances sell out, and are critical successes. Because it's a " indisputable fact" that his show is stale. Do you have any proof of this "fact"? Or are you just talking out of your ass like you always do??? You REALLY need to learn how to troll better, because you just suck at it!!! "Indisputable Fact", you're fucking HILARIOUS!!! Just because you download every bootleg, it doesn't mean people feel the same way. What you're doing is stating an OPINION. Maybe you should find a dictionary to find the difference between fact and opinion, because it's obvious you don't know. You also need to have fact to back up said opinion, otherwise, you'd just be talking out of your ass. Then again, you always do that anyway, so what's the point? JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

I've stated any number of times Prince is still worth seeing live. I don't think there's any question his musicianship has grown over the years due the simple fact that like anyone performing and honing a creative skill, it's bound to improve as a result. If you want to debate the definition of stale, take it up with The Oxford English. I'd say it's not much of a literal leap to define one that plays the same songs over and over as stale. Although amidst your drooling response, you've missed my initial point all over again but so it goes on the .org. Saying Prince is separating himself from his past is ridiculous given he's been playing the same live show for 15 years. C for effort, A- for online ragin'. No hard feelings.

If ur the type of person who thinks Prince hasn't done anything good since The Gold experience, then pls pls pls just leave him & go away! We're talking abt an album thats around 15 yrs old! So u might aswell just switch off from ur Prince collection & go listen 2 sumthing more 'interesting' instead, like Radiohead & Beck (jeez!), & leave the rest of us to look fwd 2 whats coming next; sure, I listen to Princes older stuff, but what excites me the most is knowing that there's a Prince album on the horizon. 30+ yrs & still no other artist/ band compares.

All I can say that as a devout fan since around 80 or so, I stopped listening to Prince around 95--not because I didn't like his music but because of life involvements I just didn't tune in to the music scene. I started listening again last year and I was pleasantly surprised and, some cases, thrilled with a lot of the songs I missed out on. I don't understand the either the love it or leave it attitude! I just came back! Some of the new stuff I really think is great and other songs are "merely" good. But I don't get this love or hate stuff! I was the biggest Prince fan around in the early 80s...now I am older but I don't long for the "old" days! I really don't understand this hatred toward songs that aren't the artist's best! No one can deliver masterpieces all the time! But I still think P has it in him to deliver some great songs! Maybe not what was considered "masterpeices" from the old days, but some new ones! "Dreamer"=hello?!
Won't people give him props for continuing to explore and make new music when too many that have been around for so long stop doing so and become a "greatest hits" band?! I would hate for P to do that! I want him to keep making music--his original music--whether it is hit or miss! As far as him going "rock" again--I find his jazz/funk much more interesting and compelling! I hope P keeps on creating--whether some songs are hit or miss! And performing live concerts!

I think most fans have this unrealistic fantasy soundtrack by Prince playing in their heads and they're just waiting for Prince to record and release it. It's not gonna happen! Now if the newer material isn't to you tastes then that's all good. Some others are gonna love it and want more. Prince on the other hand is recording what Prince wants to record and is motivated by what Prince finds inspiring. Not by what his fanbase feels he should be inspired by or what they feel he should record. He didn't write Purple Rain to appease the masses. It just happened that it did appeal to a larger audience. It wasn't some fan induced megahit. To think ordering Prince to be what you need him to be will ever work is a total waste of time. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

tricky99 said: The biggest problem Prince has is not his current musical output. Prince is a progressive artist. Meaning he is always looking for new avenue of expression in his music. That includes incorporating the musical past and well as keeping an ear on contemporary music. He is not particularly interested in creating another 1999 or Purple Rain, however a large portion of his fans cannot move forward with him.
If you’re a fan that is still listening to LoveSexy or ATWIAD or a regular basis you can’t help to be anchored in the past. Those albums were the creation of a young genius just learning the ropes. What we have now is a mature genius who knows more about music composition then he knew back then. He’s moved from being experimental to being a craftsmen. If you are disappointed with Lotusflower it has more to do with unrealistic expectations then it does with the music. Who in the musical universe could have created that 3 disc collection other than Prince? I'm guessing every person around Prince tells him the same thing, which explains a lot. I almost started to write another 5 paragraphs on this, but the simple thing is to point out the fact that nearly everyone is not listening to Prince anymore... ...so you have the fans on this board who don't like much of the recent stuff, while you superfans continue with the "they just don't understand him" card. Based on the point I made about the general public, I think it points to one of those points of view being correct. BTW - I have no problem with superfans who love unconditionally. They have their place. But they should also smell the coffee sometimes.

America is consumer based, Free Market, Capitalistic, and we who have bought albums with our money (not yours) have a right to express ourselves. I will always give Prince my money-he's my dude! but right behind my money is my opinion-and i'm sure it never hurt prince so much that he refused to cash a check-he's grown and he's a big boy millionaire so he understands. We also have the right to appreciate nostalgia, and trust me nostalgia is big biz as well-if it werent we wouldnt have whole channels dedicated to it that haul in millions in advertisement revenue. I'm always layin in wait for the next Prince gem, but i'm not throwing away my 1999 just to look "progressive" lol, because uhhm, i dont give a shit-most progressives are pretentious posers anyway-Prince comes to mind alot. Tell you what, since people that force poor old prince to compete with his past are so bad what would happen if prince had to decide to recieve subscription payments (lets say 20 bucks a month) from an internet channel, one channel provided unlimited footage (video, audio, TV) of Prince 1980-1995, and the other provided the same from 1995 till about 5 minutes ago, which one would he want the check from? which one would his accountant want the check from?. Yeah, Prince who knocks those who remember him when, who are as spoiled as NY Yankee fans (and only want success) will quietly tell his accountant..."ah yeah uhhm could you set it up where i could get that paper from the old school channel". So you see, insulting old school fans is also a cliche that people here use to sound smart and enlightened, moreso than the fan who clings to their vinyl and keeps it real about their dissapointment.
