How accurate are the titles on Prince bootleg cd"s?

Do the people who put together these bootlegs come up with the song titles themselves? On my Miles Davis and friends cd it list the song "Welcome to the rat race" Well we all know the correct song title is Large room with no light. There is also a funky song called Red Riding Hood...but he never says this title in the lyrics. Could this be another faux pas, and how many more songs have been mistakenly mis-titled?

I think that back when they originally came out, there was less info available, they made do with what they had. At the time, the only clear lyric in "In a Large Room..." was "Welcome to the ratrace". "Can I Play With U" was nearly unlistenable, so they made up a title from what they heard.

Others that had fun titles:
"Rebirth of the Flesh" had a ton of wrong titles - "Souly-a-colia", "Semi-a-colia", etc.

"The Ball" was often called "Crystal Ball", and "Crystal Ball" was often called "Expert Lover"

I had one boot where "Joy in Repetition" was called "Joy in Rempatition", which isn't a word.

"Last Heart" was always known as "If U Break My Heart One More Time" for a looooong time.

I have a Black Album boot with lyrics that are a trip - "Nick Rhodes from England played the bass pretty good". HA

My Rude Boy cd also has that title. Do you know what the real title of "Tricky" is? You know the song with Prince imitating Morris Day's voice?

That's actually called "Tricky". It was the b-side to "Jungle Love" and "Ice Cream Castles".

And just to clarify what was said above: "Can I Play With U" is the correct title for "Red Riding Hood". It's also the only song on that boot that actually features Miles.

My favourite has to be 'Love Simple's Interactive Night' (??! eek)

where someone obviously gave a monkey a crayon and told them to write down what they heard. as a result we get to hear the gems Face of Wild, Peter Tecknic and Veramon.

I like those title, Veramon sounds like a superhero who hides behind the alter ego of mild mannered Peter Tecknic. And his sworn nemesis is the Face of Wild!! Raaa!

Loads of bootlegs were originally mis-titled.

This was mostly due to the source material not including the song titles
(i.e. unmarked cassettes found or given out to people, record execs running
off dupe copies for friends etc.). So bootleggers had to guess at what the
song title was just by listening to the track itself.

Imagine you heard "Alphabet St." for the first time but weren't told what it
was called. You might understandably think it was titled "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah".
The same thing goes for all those unreleased tracks.

Another reason for bootleg titles being wrong was bootleggers trying to avoid
being caught. In the vinyl days, because most of the pressing plants used to
make bootlegs were actually legitimate businesses , bootleggers sometimes had to
disguise the album as something else. So they would change artist and track
titles to avoid getting caught.

track titles on boots are often wrong, or in the wrong order, or even (intentionally) misleading

I remember an "Act 1" tour bootleg that had 1 of the songs listed as "She's Always in my Chair". That still makes me chuckle.
