I would say for Prince, it is. Almost no instrumentation besides the harp, no real verse/chorus structure; Meter is all jacked. The lyrics are rather depressing for a Prince tune.

No instrumentation: Have you ever listened to "Others Here With Us", "Sometimes It Snows In April", "Annie Christian", "Walk Don't Walk" or "Dead On It", or "Bob George", and a host of others?

Depressing lyrics: Have you heard "Another Lonely Christmas", "I Hate U", "Had U", "Purple and Gold", and a host of others?

"Solo" fits the mold for Prince quite well actually.

purple and gold... hehehhehehe

Yes, Emancipation wasn't, but it's considered containing WB era material, no?
No, i don't know what P feels or thinks, of course not. A sure shot that was, but does it scratch my opinion? I don't think so.
Yes, Prince doesn't play too much of the Come or Emancipation stuff live, does he? I guess he's more like skipping that period completely when performing live, so that at least gives me (you?) a clue of what he thinks about it..

"Era" is fancy word for a time frame. Of course he wrote some of it while still under contract to WB. It's overlap. It's bound to happen, and a person has to plan ahead.

Doesn't scratch an opinion, of course not. You just seemed to be "sure" that Prince was ashamed of something, yet right in 1996, and beyond, he's said he doesn't regret anything. It's all part of the experience (of life) that got him to where he is today. That's true for any of us. It's too tough and taxing to go through life with regrets, whether it's a song, or a lover, or whatever.

One of his richest periods was COME/The Gold Experience/Exodus. It's a holy trilogy of CDs in an era of incredibly prolificity, much like the mid-80's were. Great extras were The Black Album finally coming out, compilations like Girl 6, and 1.800.NEW.FUNK, and Chaos and Disorder. I can't imagine Prince, or prince as he was, would be ashamed of any of that. He succeeded in getting out of his WB contract, releasing some of the stuff he'd wanted to for a year to that point (ie: Come was released a year after it was done, as was Gold, etc).

He skips a lot of material, it doesn't mean he's ignoring an "era" of time. I do believe (because I saw it) that he performed "Shhh!" on the Musicology tour, which was created smack dab in the middle of the 90's. He also released "Chaos and Disorder" on 3121.com, as a live cut from an after show, a few years ago.

We know why he probably skips a lot of the Emancipation material.

Like every second of the Come album it's complete bullshit. I'm sure P is SO ashamed of this and Emancipation....., rushed trash albums just thrown out to please the damn wb ...

"Come" and "Emancipation" are the two most awful outtake compilations a fan ever could have put out, period.

A guy with several thousand finished songs in his vault rarely has to rush.

He was obviously very proud of "Come" and "Emancipation" - during the era, he played almost all of from "Come" at every show.

Emancipation was great at its time... it sounds tired now, and the emphasis on his baby and Mayte probably makes him want to ignore a lot of it.

And none of the Emancipation stuff is considered "WB" material. not sure what you're on there.

He means that Emancipation was physically recorded while he was still technically under his WB contract.

And I have to say the same thing about Emancipation that you did about COME. Prince HEAVILY promoted Emancipation, appeared on a lot of shows, did a huge tour, which lasted literally the whole year of 1997.

It's always funny to me how, if a fan hates a certain Prince album, they try to project that onto Prince, and come up with some ludicrous like he's "ashamed" of it. He's all religious now, so you'd think he'd be ashamed of Dirty Mind yet he still performed "When You Were Mine", and "Uptown", and hasn't he performed "Gotta Broken Heart Again" in recent years?

It's a toss up about the Mayte inspired material, because he's performed "The One" as early as 2004, and even "I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore" in 2009, both heavily inspired by Mayte.

You guys all like it when Prince experiments, so I never could understand all the hate associated with this ditty from Come. Solo is a mixture of gothic oprah, exotic pop experimentalism, ambience and supreme beauty. His ghostly vocals sound like they were sung in a batcave while P was hanging upside down. The music is brilliant. different, haunting, really creeps you out at the end. Just a marvy song. Big yay.

Have at it,. haters. haha

Luv that song...send chills up and down my spine. But what about the "gothic oprah"? Would love to see Oprah singing that song dressed in Viking helmut and gear! Or even the "Purple and Gold" Viking song!razz lol

Everyone will have an opinion of their own; which is why Prince can be loved by so many... In my opinion 'Solo' is brilliant; haunting and vocally astounding. The harp is beautiful as well.
