you know, people say that more and more these days, as if all of his

well, they don't.

So says you. There are some 80's Prince tracks that don't do it for me. I don't hate them, they are just "meh". I mean, do you really feel that a song like "Eye No" is the bees knees? I don't. It's just there.

well, i can honestly say, with my hand on my heart, that i love every
single song he released in the 80s. every single one.

there is not a single album track that i do not like or will skip when
i listen to the complete album.

it's not like i hate everything he does now, i love a lot of it and a
few of his later songs outshine a lot of his 80s work in brilliance.

BUT, for some reason that i cannot explain, i just love his 80s songs
and all the albums he released. they are all damn near perfect and
it's funny that you mention "eye no" because that is one of the few
songs, by anyone, from any period, that just makes me smile and can
get me out of a bad mood, simply by listening to it.

lol

however, in the past, the albums were a tight package, with a concept
and a style and a vibe. if there were lesser elements, they would be
carried by the whole and in that way they would fit in and be great
because of their position in the bigger picture.

these days, most of the albums feel like mixed tapes and when a song
isn't particularly strong or eventfull, it stands on it's own as just
a bad song instead of something that might be weird or boring on it's
own but which fits brilliantly into the whole of the record.

for me "77 beverly park", although a very nice tune, would be less of
a favorit of mine if it weren't on LotusFlower, positioned where it is
now and an intricate part of the album. it works, because of where
it is placed and of what it is surrounded by. no coincidence because
Lotus is a very strong, tight album with a typical sound and cohesive
structure.

I hear ya. I'm not buying the next album until I hear it first and if there is bullshit like this on it, I'm going to let it sit in the store and collect dust. I'll put up with fuddy duddy orchestras before I'll tolerate shit hop.

Eye No is genius. The lyrics, the chanting ("Say NO...")... it is such an intricate song. Everytime I listen to it I hear something new.

I just recently heard, way underneath, some of the actual sounds from "The Ball" (I think).

name an album he has released that didnt have some lackluster tracks?

well, they don't. hmph!

i enjoy all of his later and new albums too but they aren't as good
and consistent as his prime material at all.

i think lotusflower, the title disc, is a fantastic album. but alas,
another parade, it is not.

ah yes, i live in the past, it's quiet and comfortable here and they
play some fierce motherfunkin music in this bitch.

lol

All I can say is that since I started listening to his albums at the time of their release (Purple Rain onwards) I have only liked 2-3 tracks per album. It's been consistent for me all the way through the time line. It's like he only comes up with 3-4 tracks max that I think are jewels each year. The others grow on me because of context with other things in my life. Or at this point nostalgia.
