Arsenio Hall Retrospective on VH1..no Prince? Sorry if this has been on a thread already...
Just finished watching a VH1 special on Arsenio Hall's talk show. Of course, it concerntrated mainly on Arsenio's musical guests. There were segments on Hammer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lenny Kravitz, Mariah Carey, etc...BUT NO PRINCE!! Isn't this kind of odd considering that both times (91 and 93) that Prince did the show, Arsenio essentially gave the whole hour to him? I seem to recall Arsenio being a HUGE fan and just thought this was a strange omission. To be fair, maybe I missed something since I didn't see the last 5 minutes...Damn, even Arsenio fighting with Vanilla Ice (which I had forgotten about and enjoyed seeing again!) got about 5 minutes!!! Just curious! Matt "Because when you say annihilation my friends, you've said all there is to say" - Henry Rollins

Can't believe they left out Prince. Those were amazing performances. The night with Patti LaBelle was a real buzz and Prince and the band kicked ass!!

I also read somewhere that the first Prince appearance drew his largest audience up to that point(may have been his biggest ever), so it kind of bites to hear there wasn't any mention of him. Ahhh, I just watched his performance (Patti LaBelle show) the other night and was drooling over some of those dance moves. Like when P was lying on the floor on his stomach and his dancer (forget which one, maybe Kirk) straddles him and pulls him up by the hips like he's a little rag doll. Ahhh, those were the days "You can be the President, I'd rather be the Pope"

Yeah, I forgot that aspect of it too! I remember Arsenio saying that the first appearance in 1991 was his highest rated show to that point (I think he said it sometime shortly after the apperance). It's possible that Magic's apperance after his AIDS admission in November of 91 topped it though. I remember seeing them replay all of Prince's performance on Arsenio in a seperate episode of Arsenio Jams on VH1. It wasn't a part of a compilation it only showed Prince.
Keep an eye out. They may replay it.

Are they kidding me? No Prince and Shelai E was the Host? What was that about? Prince's performances on Arsenio where something Great and very Memorable. At least the AMA'S showed clips of Prince getting his Award for Purple Rain and Missy had an Impersonator. Prince references and the name Nelson have been used frequently and it's very exciting as I always catch a kinda Buzz and Glow when that happens.

hehehe, no Natasha...the episode called "Aresenio Jams" was hosted by Sheila E., not the one Chaos was speaking of "You can be the President, I'd rather be the Pope"

i think it's just warners hatin', and forcing vh1 to follow suit. i'm sure arsenio is aware of the fact that p's two appearances were unprecedented and most everyone who was a fan of his show knows this, man...
p.s. i didn't get to go to the show, but p's first appearance drew over 400 people in line 24+ hours before taping. i know this, cause i went to see all them fools (i use this term affectionately) standing, waiting, and hoping... p.s.s. i also had an advance tape of "d&p" (don't ask), and played "thunder" on a boombox for those in ear shot. you shoulda seen their faces...

I just finished watching that too, it seems to me that they wanted to concentrate on musical guests who were new to the scene at that time. Artists who were not established quite yet. Maybe that's why there were no mentions of Prince - because at that time he was so popular and not just getting his start like some of the other people mentioned. The interview with Vanilla Ice was great Arsenio just would not back down, which was great.

"I jus wanna ask one question...Is it me, or
is that boy BAD?"- Arsenio Hall, after My Name Is Prince performance. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Why, then, would the show feature Elton John and Sting? As I watched this, I wonder if it were a Warner production.
