It has been discussed a couple of times, but what exactly is the story behind P being upset by something or someone at the Septimo taping?

I was listening to Motherless Child and did some research but found nothing. On a separate note, what an FN' song. A thousand listens and I still love it like the first time.

Don't know about him being upset, but P's performance of that song was !

I could have sworn that someone mentioned a situation backstage or something that pissed him off. Maybe I imagined it.....lol

Apparently he had an interview scheduled with film director Pedro Almodovar, but Prince changed his mind that very same day, and all the staff, PRs and press got real mad at him. Then there was the taping of the performance. Initially it was scheduled around that day's afternoon, but it got CANCELLED due to sound issues on the TV studio (lots of reverb and stuff, I think). Now Prince got real mad with it. I remember some quote from him like "can't they just wrap the walls with some carpet or something?". Eventually, they convinced Prince to perform and the gig took place like 6 hours later than initially planned. I got there along a bunch of journalists, and the atmosphere was really strange. Got to see Prince leaving after a soundcheck, and just a glance could tell you he wasn't precisely in the best of moods. Still, after all, he nailed a killer performance.

Thanks psyche. That clears up everything. If Motherless Child was born from that frustration, I'll take it. P and Almodovar would have been an interesting interview. Too bad it never happened.

All that, plus the fact that Mayte was part of the show which was totally weird, cosidering that at the time, P and Mayte was estranged!! Could never understand why she was part of the show and even the fact that Prince handed her a rose during the last number!!!!!

Bizarre indeed, as time proved their relationship was practically over by then. My personal theory (PURE speculation this time) is that Prince wanted to have Mayte around for THAT show as some kind "special featurette" or deference for the Spanish audience. All in all it was all over the media they bought that big mansion in the south of Spain just 15 months ago, and suppose Prince just thought it could only "enhance" the show to have her around.

Regarding that rose, it was given by a (female) fan to Prince when folks were invited on-stage for "Everyday People" ... a few seconds later he just handed it to Mayte. No big deal.

They played a small club the next night in Madrid, and Mayte was on stage again. They were in a much better mood and one couldn't notice anything odd between them, however the gig wasn't much inspired, must say.
