Okay: Shockadelica. Hi!
Seems like every other day, there's a new 'what's your favourite b-side' thread here on the Org. All the usual suspects always appear - Erotic City, She's Always In My Hair, Alexa De Paris, La La La, He He Hee... all great songs that I love dearly, don't get me wrong. But - nobody ever seems to mention Shockadelica! Is this just because people don't think of it right away, or do people honestly dislike this kick-ass song? So, how about some love for Shockadelica. Or if you don't like it, please tell my why... 'cause I just can't understand!

Great track. The storyline for it's creation lends to it's charm. Has he ever performed it live anywhere? Anyone? When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

It's not my favorite b-side, but I do like it. I'll take "Erotic City" or "She's Always In My Hair" before it. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Yes, the minute I heard that song being played one night in a mix jam on K104 in Dallas I knew I had to have it. I just didn't know it was released. The didn't mention they were going to play it but as soon as I heard it I knew it was Prince (the Camille voice). Of course I went out and bought it the next day. It was a b-side to have. Especially the long version.

IMO its one of his best B-sides ever, especially the unedited version.
Part of his 'next step' in the development of his funk-based music. Everybody's always talking about the 'Minneapolis sound' (the style he delivered from 1981 - 1984: Dirty Mind unto Purple Rain, including the music from his side-artists) as being so important / influential (which it was), but it sometimes overshadows the significance of his later steps in 'funk'. ATWIAD was a bit of a transitional album (to me its still very 'Minneapolis sound' in the core), while Parade was rather 'anomalic' because of its purpose as a soundtrack of a movie that played in the pre-rock and roll era (resulting in influences of instrumental film music, jazz, vaudeville and chanson). But with the Camille-project (Late 1986), the more stripped down songs on Sign of the Times (the title track, the Camille tracks, It, Hot Thing, the B-sides) and also some songs from the Batman project in 1989 (The Future, Feel U Up, S.E.X.) you can 'hear' he is aiming for a very bareboned / minimalistic type of 'funk' with a dark undercurrent and often with psycho-sexual lyrics. Shockedelica is one of his best songs in that vein.

Very, Very, Very dark song. I remember everytime I use to play the 12inch version of this song back in the day on my mother's stereo the needle would always lift from the record everytime as though the stereo didn"t want to play that record...very weird...the only time I ever seen a turntable stop playing music on it's own. "The lights go out the smell of doom/creepin into your lonely room"....you guys know the rest...kinda reminds you of the first verse to "Power Fantastic"...hmmmm.

Check out Ween's version, they call it "L.M.L.Y.P.". It stands for Let Me Lick Your Pussy. It's awesome. I have also seen them cover "Kiss", "Forever in My Life", a little of "Bob George", and "1999" (new years day 1999). I'm just saying...

I've never liked it. And I've come to terms with that. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

The problem I have with it, is it's on Camille, which is possibly my favourite album of all time. Possibly. And compared to the other 7 tracks, it's just not quite as good. With the possible exception of Good Love.
It's a decent tune, just surrounded by excellent one's. Erik blah blah blah

I have that version by Ween but didn't know it was them. Thanks for the info. I had it under 'unknown artist' in my iTunes. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!
