It is odd that Prince fans can be embarrassed.

So, some fans are "embarrassed" by the Vikings song. Just as they were "embarrassed" by "Wedding Feast" or any number of out of the box Prince moments.

It got me thinking...how can diehard Prince fans ever be embarrassed by him at this point?

Consider: Even if you were a fan from day one, you knew this cat was a bit...odd, different, etc. You can play he was always cool, but he always has had this eccentricity and downright weirdness about him. Seriously, in the 80's he was viewed as being more odd than Michael Jackson. For real.

Anyways, how is it that after years of face writing, prince for a name, wearing girl's blouses, assless pants, and high heels, that hardcore Prince fans can even be embarrassed by anything he does? I thought we were cooler than that.

When you joined Prince fandom, didn't you kind of know what you were getting into?

If people are embarrassed by the song then they should be embarrassed.

I think people here are grossly over-reacting. But here again this is Prince.org and I am not suprised. Just by the negative posts on the thread that Prince had written a fight song for the Minnesota Vikings shows that People have a long way to go. I could understand if one does'nt care for the song and says just that, But to be downright ugly about it is uncalled for.

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

I love it when prince puts himself out there like this. I prefer it to the unsmiling sunglassed un-fun but cool guy we tend to see.

I have no reason to feel any embarassment for appreciating a musician/artist. He's human but also not perfect, just like the rest of us. Besides I don't give a crap what someone else thinks of how I appreciate a musician who has given us the gift of his music for more than 30 years and crossed racial lines, the way he did during the early part of his career, and still succeeding in doing so. I don't base my decision on anyone else's opinion of which artist's music or talent I should appreciate or feel the same way they do, about a song he created. Everyone is going to have their own opinion of him or his music.

I don't expect every album or single to be perfect or make it to number one on the charts. If he releases an album I pick the songs that move me, and maybe the ones I'm not that crazy about may grow on me later.

All I know is that I appreciate Prince as a musician/artist, and when he's on stage performing at a concert and sharing his music with us, but at the same time, I also understand that when he's off stage, he's a human being, just like everyone else, with a personal life, family, friends, that deserves to be respected. You have to know when to separate the musician/artist on stage from the individual off stage.

you know, the only thing sadder than overreaction to the song is the overreactions to the overreactions some of you are having.

so people are making fun of it. you like it. big fucking deal.

it doesn't require psychotheraputic analysis like this.

I have a lot of family and friends who don't care for Prince and never will. They cringe when I play his music (even the hits) and it's never embarassed me one bit. Not every song is for everybody and I have my share of Prince tracks that I never listen to but I still stand by my admiration and respect for all he's created for his fans.

As I said in the other thread, I don't think that lecturing people for lampooning a song they dislike is going to make any difference.

People are making exaggerated comments and jokes about it...so what?

it's mind blowing that grown adults could have such a reaction to other people not liking and joking about a song they like.

I can understand where you're coming from but let's keep it real about the average Orger. Love this song or hate it... they will be first in line for the next show to hit within a 150 mile radius of their hometown (and he could open with this track and they'd sit thru it and love it) and they will probably download this track just for the sake of completion. I know that I will. I only heard a snippet of it on the radio and didn't care for it but I'll reserve a full opinion until I've heard the entire track. The vibe on this track is that Prince is crazy, washed up, over and the list goes on. If Prince took that attitude himself then he'd have never made it past that opening for the Rolling Stones. I keep reminding myself how much I disliked 'Song of the Heart' at first. Now I love it.

If we are going to be real,
Prince has proved time and again that he is still the greatest live performer alive, with one of the greatest music catalogs of any artist. That is why everyone will be at his concert.
The day Prince starts to disappoint on that stage, his ticket sales will drop just like his record sales have. Lets not kid ourselves.

Guess what? I don't like the fight song. However, I am certainly not embarrassed by it. That is what what I am speaking of and not "purple and gold". So please respond to your overreactions of overreactions on that thread.

From my experience, yes, I knew what I was getting into...later on.

I liked Prince basically my entire existence. Roughly 81 or 82 for sure. So that's kinda what I saw...but through a kid's eyes. So, to me, it seemed very normal, like all people should be like this, or do the things he does, or that everyone's career or whatever is the same. So when I got picked on for it, I didn't really understand how people couldn't see what I saw. It was when I got older and spread my mental wings a bit more where I understood some of the impact (or less impact maybe at times) and yea...I understood the ridicule. It was still jacked up and wrong, but at least I wasn't in the dark as to how others may have felt.

Either way, I don't feel embarrassed by the Vikings song. I just hate that once again, because of those that don't like him (and I know a few) I will have to defend my homie. Why? Because, regardless of whether people think he's lost it...shit....at least he had it. I defend what I dig, and it's a strain sometimes. But I carry the flag. Does all of this sound dramatic?

Coolz...

lol ya think?? It's a fight song for the Vikings, for Buddha's sake! I wasn't expecting The Grand Progression, thus I listened to the snippet, took it for what it was advertised as, and havent thought about it since, except when I came here and saw madness!! He said fight song, and it literally reminds me of a fight song for football in high school and college!

I think some P fans are a crazy about P as MJ fans are about MJ. And not in a good way.

If that Vikings song is embarrassing to you, then you've probably never been embarrassed by anything "Prince" before. lol

To me, that song is NOTHING compared to things he's done/worn/said in the 90s and 80s that could seriously cause fan embarrassment. lol

I was embarrassed about being a Prince fan whenever he tried to rap. That sh*t was HORRIBLE.

Other than that I agree with the first post...by the time I was 10 I was fully aware of what I had gotten myself into, it just didn't matter cuz Prince was It to me!

I will love Prince always and forever (music-wise, anyway). I actually happen to like Wedding Feast, thank you. It's got a point to it. Anyway, I do not like his fight song. Matter of fact, I hate it. That doesn't make me less of a Prince fan. It's called having an opinion. There are some things people like, and there are some things people don't. His music is no exception to this rule. Would I go so far as to say I am embarrassed as a fan? Probably not so much. That song doesn't represent my fandom. Maybe it does to someone else.

In the end, it's just a song. lol If ever I hear it again, I'll just hit mute or bark loudly until it's over. eek
