So, if Prince kicks over, who will control the infamous "vault"? I mean, really...
Why the fucking hell would anyone record, record, record, and film, film, film, just to stick it in a stupid fucking vault??? A nut, that's who. I agree with Kevin Smith. "The world's ending, but we have Prince music!!!" Ha ha ha...

Yeah, maybe it's a dead horse to you, but I just felt like saying it... Depressing, isn't it?

I suppose I could ask something more important, like what Prince's next hairdo will be...

I don't think anyone knows. Or at least it isn't common knowledge enough for it to be freely spoken about.
You know how P. fans are | |

Whatever happens I think it will be messy. You've probably got a lot of interests, friends, family and legal next of kin, whoever his current partner/spouse might be at the time. Unless he has very clear legal instructions already written out (and perhaps even despite these), there will be many people coming out of the woodwork to have their say on what should happen with his musical legacy. A bit like the Hendrix estate goes through from time to time.
Not for us to worry about... [Edited 1/20/10 1:34am] Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

Prince isn't going to "will" that stuff to anyone...it will stay in the vault awaiting his re-birth

I dont believe there is any Vault, just a big Myth. there is a vault with lots of great live stuff, Prince is recording every concert, besides in 1999 he said to Kurt Loder on MTV, that the songs from the real "erotic central Prince" were in the vault, too. (Prince said something like that.) [Edited 1/20/10 3:36am] Prince 4Ever.

Not for us to worry about... It might even be better for us in a way if this was the case - might result in more releases. Sure they might be messy and on this label and that label, etc, etc, but that's better than diddleysquat, which is probably what Prince wants to leave us all in his 'will'.

I could hope, that Prince would hire an art direction mananger with a good sense for quality and art in general, and perhaps would be the one who called the shots in a post-Prince world. (By keeping the shit songs in the vault, releasing the right material in the right context, setting up sweet deals with Warners ect.)
Kinda like wishing that it was Quincy Jones who was in charge of the whole Michael Jackson fairy wheel. However, it'll probably be some obscure religious group who'll be in charge. Right now, I'm sure The Elder's of Jehovah's Witnesses are the ones listed on top of his private will.

He's been a complete control freak in life, so I'm sure he will see to it that this will continues in death also.
Whilst I sincerely hope he lives a long and happy life, I am looking forward to the day when I will able to watch old and obscure performances and videos on the net without NPG copyright claims taking down every single fucking video. I mean, dancing babies? WTF??

IF a vault exists, I would be keen on thinking that when Prince feels his time has come, he will delete everything. It's all immaterial and can be discarded.
It's a show of power to destroy one's worldly belongings. Didn't he do this with his houses? . . [Edited 1/20/10 5:03am]

I don't know what's the world you are living in, but I'm going on the Internet every single day and watch tons of Prince related videos in variety of formats and qualities - yes, they're shutting something down from time to time, but today it's a not huge problem, to be honest. Whatever you want, it's out there, in one click availability from Google search results - so what's the problem? We can't stop the music

Yeah, were it not for the old tried & true newsgroups, I would not have anything by Prince in regard to non-released stuff... I sure as hell wouldn't scour the net for it, either.

It could have the same fate as Stevie Wonder's unreleased material. Stevie's plan is 2 discard/delete/destroy it all... unless he's changed his mind recently. "He's a musician's musician..."

What is hilarious is that he really takes himself THAT seriously.
In 100 years, he will only be a name in a music history book. He will not be popular, as he is, now. How do I know? How many musicians from the distant past are still popular, today? Beethoven, Mozart, a small handful. How many people know who Greta Garbo, Rudolph Valentino, or Glenn Miller are? Yeah, they are still known, but far from being popular in mainstream society... Go ahead, tell me I'm full of shit and that Prince is the messiah of the music world.

Shortly before the release of lotusflower and the website, I read that Prince said he hired someone to work on the stuff in the vault and that he would release seven or ten (can't remember which one) albums to lotusflower members. Does anyone else remember this?

Nothing was ever promised, it was a pure carrot.RIP

Apparently you know who they are...why does it matter if they are popular in "mainstream soceity?" So what if in 200 years, there are only a handful of people who are listening to Prince's music...if they are still enjoying it, that's what counts. 5 people or 5 million, it's the same thing....or what "magic number" do you have where someone is "popular enough".

People like Oprah and Prince should have offspring to leave everything to. In reality it's a shame, but hey, what can u do?
I personally think Sheila E.'s the one he's gonna leave everything to. She's the only one out of the Prince troupe that stuck around or that he kept around for the longest. Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

Seems logical from a fan perspective, but somehow I think a lawyer like Londell will end up with the rights to things, as MJ did with his stuff to some degree. My biggest concern isn't that the vault stuff won't come out, but rather if it does, will it be highly edited per Prince's dying wishes. I mean, isn't he just enough to have this clause in his will:
Fuck Shit Damn Hell Pussy Motherfucker Goddamn Fucker Fucking I do have a feeling that a lawyer would somehow get past that and just release stuff. Sheila E. might be free to release things and probably wouldn't worry as much about the cursing as Prince would. But it's all conjecture. I don't want Prince dead, but I do want that vault material. It's a fucking shame that after 17 years of being dead, Frank Zappa still has albums of stuff coming out. Prince is alive and stagnant in his music, his releases, and his connection with his fan base. The same bitchy, "Let's sue them too" fan base that has kept him neck high in his little Cuban boots, his silk blouses, his tailored pants, his OxyContin, and helping pay his electric bill at Paisley Park.
