What I see as embarassing is that Prince is not doing this for the team, he is doing it to ride the coat tail of the moment and get himself noticed. It's all about exposure. prince fans are embarrassed by prince because prince used to be innovative and interesting and now hes just lame. that was not a prince penned fight song .. that was prince trying to immitate some traditional form of songwriting and prince always fails miserably when he tries to retread well worn ground.
such as his christian albums ... boring and lame his attempts at rap ... boring and lame classical music .. boring and lame take a song like god or the ladder ... awesome .. but he was being prince ripping on wb ... awesome revolutionizing internet ... awesome pushing vegetarian and political awareness beyond force fed media ... awesome its like when ur best friend decides to wear a giant clock around his neck to be like flava flav ... well it gets embarassing ... we love prince for his originality .. not for his attempts to prove he can write in any genre .. those efforts are ego drivin not art driven ... it is embarrassing to want to turn people on to how awesome prince is at times when simply saying check out prince wont cut it anymore ... it must be accompanied by ... well dont waste ur time with this and that cuz its kinda lamo its always been there ... the revolution just weeded a lot of his dumber stuff out ... and when they were gone ... it returned .. it is embarrassing when u say i love prince and people look at u funny cuz they heard some crap like guitar and are like why? he used to be a beacon of cool ... now he is more ego driven and its hard to be around | |

for the first time as a prince fan...i am embarrassed. I am embarrassed that my husband called me after listening to howard stern this morning with his comments about this prince song...he usually leave me alone about all things prince...but i am not living this one down for a while...why o why did prince have to take this one public???? thank goodness the vikings didn't win...the sooner this one if forgotten...the better... | |

Except is wasn't Prince being Prince at the time. When Around the World in a Day came out, half of Prince's fans nearly lost their minds. Prince was stretching and was accused of biting The Beatles or trying to go "psychadelic 60's" and all that. Even the album cover was very 1968. ripping on wb ... awesome
Do you mean writing SLAVE on his cheek, or the music? I know a lot of Prince fans that were embarrassed by his PR moves during that era. I dug it, and I also liked songs taking swipes at WB like "Face Down". Then again, I don't always find Prince's rapping "boring and lame". revolutionizing internet ... awesome
I don't disagree with you, yet I know a lot of Prince fans who thought he took some missteps here as well. Some hated his love4oneanother website nonesense and nearly threwup after what some still call "The Crystal Ball Fiasco." pushing vegetarian and political awareness beyond force fed media ... awesome

How do you know what/why Prince is driven to write anything? This is very specualtive and presumptious. The fact is, you don't know and can only speculate. I mean, I love "baby I'm a Star", but (using your standards) that seems to be an effort in ego and not art. Conversely, there are several examples of Prince dipping into different genres that seem more art driven. The Madhouse albums,One Nite Alone and The Truth being a few examples. it is embarrassing to want to turn people on to how awesome prince is at times when simply saying check out prince wont cut it anymore ... it must be accompanied by ... well dont waste ur time with this and that cuz its kinda lamo

Who are these people that you speak of? Guitar is not my favorite or greatest of greats, but seems like an odd song to be embarrassed by. I suppose it depends where and when you play it,and whom you play it for. Again, how do you know he is more ego drivn now than in, say, 1984? You don't really. To me, he always has seemed like an ego driven guy. I think he is still a beacon of cool and is no more nerdy than he was when he was knocking over lamp post props at the James Brown show. It is odd that fans can get embarrassed. I got embarrassed a couple of times with the "Slave" period. But I still stick to his side and explain to others who might not exactly get what he means. Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!!  In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!! | |
