I understand the embarassment.
I myself have recently been attempting to get some of my friends to begin to explore the genius of Prince, and to them this song makes Prince appear foolish. Having said that, one shouldn't be so quick to simply hate the song. Yes yes, the song is awful, but Prince is a musical genius, so it is likely that he aware of how the song sounds. Prince, THE ARTIST, is doing something greater with this song. Prince is a PERFORMANCE ARTIST, and everything he touches should be viewed beyond the immediate presentation. Prince is a living musical, and the fight song is just another episode in his lifelong epic tale. I really enjoyed the comparison with Cabaret's "TOMORROW BELONGS 2 ME". Rather than simply taking the song at it's immediate face value, fans of Prince the Performance Artist ought to look deeper. Prince is no fool and knows exactly what he's doing, much more than most of those who took the time to listen to (and immediately hate) this song.

Hey, I listened to the entire song before I decided I hated it... If he knows what he is doing, you are implying he knew this song was ghastly & put it out, anyway? Is there some mystical, purple, magical reason he would do this? Is it to communicate with the stars and celebrate the upcoming vernal equinox?

The Vikings are a great team, but I tell ya, back in the day every time I rooted for them damn Vikings in the big one they let me down. I can't endure another heartbreak. Skywalker's question was "how can diehard Prince fans ever be embarrassed by him at this point?" ...and started by makin reference to the so-called 'embarrassment' of Prince fans for the Vikings song. Some ppl answered the question, others focused solely on the Vikings song and it strayed from there... thus my statement. I didn't see 'anyone who says they are embarrassed isn't a real fan' anywhere in skywalker's post. well, i guess that's where we differ. Gaga will win tons of Grammys. I don't get her but at least she can sing. Prince has very tough competition, being up against Springsteen, Young, Fogerty and Dylan. If Prince doesn't win the Grammy's....ok fine...but I would be totally embarrassed if "lady Gaga" wins.....

It is a weak person with a deformed self esteem who would take on some embarrassment for something in which he/she had absolutely no involvment and that came from another person that they do not even know. I can guarantee you that Prince isnt embarrassed when any of his less intelligent fans say something racist or burn the french fries at work.
As much and as long as I have loved Prince, I understand that he is a man - just like me - and he is a stranger. He doesnt do anything with a concern for me personally so I dont internalize anything he does as if it can be associated to me personally simply because I admire him and his work. skywalker said: So, some fans are "embarrassed" by the Vikings song. Just as they were "embarrassed" by "Wedding Feast" or any number of out of the box Prince moments.
It got me thinking...how can diehard Prince fans ever be embarrassed by him at this point? Consider: Even if you were a fan from day one, you knew this cat was a bit...odd, different, etc. You can play he was always cool, but he always has had this eccentricity and downright weirdness about him. Seriously, in the 80's he was viewed as being more odd than Michael Jackson. For real. Anyways, how is it that after years of face writing, for a name, wearing girl's blouses, assless pants, and high heels, that hardcore Prince fans can even be embarrassed by anything he does? I thought we were cooler than that. When you joined Prince fandom, didn't you kind of know what you were getting into? [Edited 1/22/10 20:18pm] i seriously love wedding feast its everything Prince is to me-to compare it to purple and gold is fucking bullshit

If I understand Skywalker's question, I think that he is saying that he understands that in many cases a fan may not like Prince's work, but why would one be embarrassed by it? I did not take it as if he was admonishing people for saying they were embarrassed but simply trying to gain a better understanding of their embarrassment.
I'll admit that when some said they were embarrassed, it struck me as odd also. Again, I'm not saying they don't have the right to be embarrassed, but I don't understand why one would be embarrassed. I guess I'm not one who considers the notions of others when I choose what I like be it music, clothes, or literature, and I've been a Prince fan since 1980. My standards and likes are mine, and I rarely spend time trying to convince others that they should like what I like. I try to get information to make an informed choice, but, ultimately, my decisions and likes are based on what I like or dislike, and I've never been able to be embarrassed from something my favorite artist did. I'll admit to being obtuse when it comes to other people's notions, standards, or likes, but I just don't care what other people like or what other people think is weird or corny or bad. So whenever someone tried to make me feel bad or awkward for liking something that they felt was weird or sub-standard, I would just shrug my shoulders and carry on. So, like Skywalker, I found it odd that so many people used the word embarrassed. And maybe they were not using the word in its full context or meaning, but I still find it odd. Yet, again, I'm not saying they don't have the right to feel how they feel. It just doesn't make sense to me. If you like what or who you like because it moves you more than it doesn't move you, then how can you be embarrassed by it, especially when there is no guarantee with art or artists? I think that Skywalker was just looking for some clarification about the use of the word "embarrass" rather than looking to admonish people.

I do not find it odd that some fans are embarrassed by he "Purple & Gold" song.
It was odd. Prince and his music are in some ways part of their extended family, as if he was an old friend from high school or college. I was shocked by it, it left me speechless at first. Then I found it funny, because Prince does have that twisted sense of humor. Maybe some one dared him to it or he was just trying to have fun. On analysis, it sounds like an old high school/college anthem, or an old hymn. I hope somewhere in "the vault" their is the version the Camille side of his personality made where it is funkier. Alot of demos are rough at first and then he will change it.
