Ditto. Good thread Skywalker and observation. Glad you're still around. Makes something on the org worth reading smile

Anyways, how is it that after years of face writing, prince for a name, wearing girl's blouses, assless pants, and high heels, that hardcore Prince fans can even be embarrassed by anything he does? I thought we were cooler than that.

In the exampples that you give, it's about style and appearances. I've never cared about how Prince looks or acts. At the time of writing on his face and re-naming himself into a non-name, he created some of his arguably most beloved 1990's music.

But with Wedding Feast (which I quite enjoy ..) and Viking's fight song, we're at the core of what Prince is about and why people buy records: the music. It's difficult to be embarrassed about Princee in girl's underwear, when he makes Dirty Mind, or his high heels, when he's making Purple Rain. Heck, he could look like whatever and make crap music, and I wouldn't care about his looks .. just the music.

But when he makes cringeworthy music, then people will feel embarrassed, since all the other stuff surrounding Prince is just noise and flash lights, and people don't buy The Gold Experience or Come just for the booklet and pictures, but for the music.

Please note, that I think Purple and Gold is an okay sports anthem. I just don't hear the trademarks of Prince in the song, but rather feel he tried to make a conservative fight song and in the process erased himself.. and Prince is only good at being Prince, and his attempt at dumbing it down to suit the traditional sound of a fight song, just didn't succeed.

I don't care though. I don't live in the US, I won't ever go and see the Vikings and the song will never be on any future Prince cd or be played in my radio. It's a "small" song to a "small" and select audience who are supposed to care more about the Vikings than Prince, so I'll just ignore it. And if it hadn't been for the internet, I'm sure only the local fans of the Vikings would ever know about the tune.

As I said in the other thread, I don't think that lecturing people for lampooning a song they dislike is going to make any difference.

People are making exaggerated comments and jokes about it...so what?

The last time I was embarassed by Prince, was back in 1986 when club DJs used to play snips of "Do U Lie" and "Venus De Milo" behind songs like "Let's Work" and "1999" and then would say "What in the hell happened to Prince!!!"....and the audience would laugh their asses off. I learned very quickly that Prince is not a reflection of me so there was no need to be embarassed. Hell, I was even laughing my ass off also when the DJ said those things because I agreed with him and the rest of the club.

If anyone I know were to hear that fight song, they wouldn't even raise an eyebrow. That would just simply say...."Well, I see that Prince is still out there in La La Land....do y'all remember that classical shit he did back in the 80s". Everyone would laugh about it and then they would move on.

So, some fans are "embarrassed" by the Vikings song. Just as they were "embarrassed" by "Wedding Feast" or any number of out of the box Prince moments.

It got me thinking...how can diehard Prince fans ever be embarrassed by him at this point?

Consider: Even if you were a fan from day one, you knew this cat was a bit...odd, different, etc. You can play he was always cool, but he always has had this eccentricity and downright weirdness about him. Seriously, in the 80's he was viewed as being more odd than Michael Jackson. For real.

Anyways, how is it that after years of face writing, prince for a name, wearing girl's blouses, assless pants, and high heels, that hardcore Prince fans can even be embarrassed by anything he does? I thought we were cooler than that.

When you joined Prince fandom, didn't you kind of know what you were getting into?

[Edited 1/22/10 20:18pm]

Wedding Feast isn't embarrassing to me because it is part of a concept album that sounds kind of like a theatrical church production with a million dollar budget (the whole sequence of songs). But the fight song is stand alone, and in the sports fan macho arena.

so some people are embarrassed to be prince fans for a few days... so damn what?

it's worth starting a thread to chide them in a passive-aggressive silly way?

1. Not chiding anyone, more to the point, not speaking just of this moment and the Vikings song.

2. Is it worth continuing this back and forth about my intentions in starting this thread? I asked the question, so what?

I JUST heard the fight song. I didn't think it could be half as bad as ya'll were saying, but it's worse!! It sounds more like proslytizing than a song that's supposed to get you revved up.

I'm not embarassed though. I just hope it's not played while the game is being televised. He should've updated "We Gets Up". Wasn't that an unofficial song about the Bulls? I always liked it eventhough no one else seemed to. .

so, you're chiding people for not liking his new stuff, period?

lol

my point is still: so what? what difference does it make in your life that people don't like that wet fart of a fight song? how does it affect you if people don't like wedding feast, or any of his other silliest moments?

2. Is it worth continuing this back and forth about my intentions in starting this thread? I asked the question, so what?

lol

you started a thread... on a discussion board... and you don't want the topic to be discussed?

meaning... what? this is your sermon, not a discussion?

so the fight song has nothing to do with this topic? let's be honest. i read your posts in that thread (and many others), and given the timing, as well as use of the word "embarrased" which was used quite a bit in that thread, i am not sure i believe you.

as awful as the movies of GB and UTCM are, they do have some good moments. the fight song... not so much.

but more to the point, and to come back to my original point...

so what? let 'em be embarrased. it's an embarrassing song for the public to hear from him when most of the public hasn't heard anything from him since TGE. who cares?

To answer the question tho', there have been numerous times I have been embarrassed to be a Prince fan mainly because people call me on the carpet for some of the stuff Prince does that goes directly against the things I say I am against. Also, the slave thing, the assless pants thing, the suing the lady over her baby singing along to Let's Go Crazy, etc. There is plenty to be embarassed about, in my honest opinion.

I've never been embarrassed (for him) by his behavior, only by his creative output. I'd say the 3 most embarrassing moments would be:

1. GB - the movie.

2. Purple and Gold

3. Gangsta glam vid (most embarrassing moment, but no-one saw that... lol )

I don't really think embarrassed is the right term, either. I'm more disturbed at the display of Prince's questionable creative taste and low-quality output in the above...

You make an excellent point. I have been a hard core Prince fan from day one - the 1978 release of For You day one. I have been there through the makeup, high heels, and bikini briefs that made it tough to be a straight male Prince fan. I had the shower poster from the Controversy album on my bedroom wall. I had 3 pairs of high heeled boots that I wore to school with my trench coat and baggies. The jocks laughed and threatened to kick my ass but I got all the chicks I wanted. I was too cool to be defined in those teenage years because I took my cue from Prince - I was not afraid to be different and original. I lived it every day. I was never embarrassed of myself or my love for Prince's work. Anyone who claims they are is weak and silly - its that simple. I back Prince all the way. He has consistently made my life better for the last 30 years - and continues to do so. God bless him.

I am not saying the fight song has nothing to do with the topic, just that it was only the impetus for this larger topic ie Prince fandom/embarrassment. I said so in my original post.

However, it was my intention in this thread to talk about a slightly different topic and not focus on soley the Vikings song and if people are embarrassed by it. Clearly they are. I am talking about a larger scope of Prince fandom.. not just the here and now. Does that make sense?
