Here's the link for the full version that Giovanni posted on here: http://www.vikings.com/me...36975dd042 I think what's not working for me are the voices. They're not the best. This version is a little better. Still doesn't say "fight song" to me. More like an "anthem".

This song and thread goes a long way to showing how closed minded many Prince fans are. Or that people don't understand the intent.
The song is supposed to be some old 1940's football marching music. So you have: People bitching that Prince shouldn't make that kind of song. People not understanding the type of song style/ tradition of American football. People so entrenched in their fandom, that Prince throwing out a silly football song is enough to make them depressed and consider "not being a Prince fan." "New Power slide...."

I think i like it better now after hearing the whole thing. It still sounds like a demo though, but add a powerful choir of men and a bombastic
production and this could actually work. I think most people calling the song an embarrassment are totally missing the point. [Edited 1/22/10 11:09am]

If it were sped up and with a decent arrangement, it could be a catchy anthem. As is though, you can tell me I don't understand the music all you want, but you are wrong.
If it walks like a duck and smells like shit, it's a shitduck. Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it. |

Wow, I tried to listen to the whole version. I couldn't get past the first few verses. It's so terrible. Like Wedding Feast/Cutz/Arms of Orion/Graffiti Bridge terrible. Like worse than Carmen Electra's rapping terrible.
I hope the Vikings lose so hopefully everyone can forget this song ever existed. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Riverpoet31 said: I think this long version is allready a lot better then the snippet we heard. Its not my type of music, still very corny, but i can see what he was trying to achieve. My main complaint: the plastic / cheap sounding instrumentation, in that way it reminds me of The arms of orion: songs like these need a BIG arrangement (big orchestra, marching band, choirs) to go for full KITSCH-effect... lol This would have worked a lot better in a 'Graffiti Bridge' type of arrangement. Thats exactly my thoughts. Maybe the marching band is to come? Even if i hated all about it, i'd still be impressed, why? How the funk does one hop about genres like that!? This man did Head and Sister to The Cross and HouseQuake to The Truth and Days of Wild and now....today....Ol' Skool Company to Purple and Gold! It just baffles me. Prince fans seem like they can't wait for a chance to denounce him. He throws out a catchy lil old-style school anthem and these fools are worried about what their friends will think. Really if you are "embarassed" by Prince that says something about your maturity level. I don't love the song are anything close to that but its another lil puzzle piece to the musician. These folks are addicted to Prince at the same time can't wait for a reason to gut him like a fish. Its disturbing.

As always, i agree 100% I'd also like to point out that i'd actually claim this as a new low if he delivered a Who Dat. and speaking of Who Dat, don't you see what Prince is trying to do people? lordy. Unfortunately, IMO, I think it's the "fight song" that is going to make the Saints beat the living shit out of the Vikings! So then you like it? It sounds like quite a few football anthems. If a full stadium of Viking fans are singing it and emphasize on certain verses of the song, it won't sound bad at all sung in unison. Especially if they're pumped up for the game. [Edited 1/22/10 10:52am] No! I think when the Saints hear it, they're going to beat the living shit out of the Vikings on GP! (That stands for general principle.) As for the Vikings fans...their response to it will be interesting to see, before AND after the game. . [Edited 1/22/10 11:34am] I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Currently, the MN Vikings "fight" song/march is called "Skol' Vikings" and it is VERY similar in theme and style to "Purple and Gold". "New Power slide...."

Or r u being negative like all the other so called Prince fans on this fake Princesite that claims 2 love him... It's not being negative. It sounds more like my High School Alma Mater than anything else.
Hail to the Redskins is a fight song as is the Miami Dolphin #1 song. Just my opinion. I hope the fans in MN love it, but I have my doubts. Later Cause tomorrow is taking too long
and yesterday's too far away and the reality that you believe in begins to bind.

Jim Rome played it and pretty much crucified the tune initially on his show this morning.
One of the emailers described it as something like, "A cross between the Soviet National Anthem and something you'd hear on a Disneyland ride." Later in the show JR described his feelings about the song as going from shock/anger/bemusement/now I like it. Anyway, imo it comes off more like an anthem than a fight song. tA Tribal Records "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

I admit...it makes more sense with the full song. However, this is still rather groan worthy.
