Well, it seems he was more or less trying to create an anthem for the team, which there is nothing wrong with that, especially if it was a gift to the team, but I think because this is one game away from the Vikings' hope of making it to the Superbowl, they could use another song that's a little catchy and fun to pep them up for the game. In any case, I'm sure the Vikings appreciate the gesture. [Edited 1/22/10 6:32am]

It was made out of inspiration and support, or? It's an anthem for their game on sunday, right? A little piece of support... And now look at the Feedback, judges everywhere...if you don't get the spirit why this was made, why don't you stay put and leave your comment blank? It is not a single and it is not, I heard nothing else, to rally up the charts. That is not the intention of it. If the ones who got the gift like it, why are so many bashing it right away and moreso bashing the giver at the same time...how nice. You get a gift and don't like it, well would you spit in the face of the giver? VERY well-said.

I'm not reviewing it as a single, I'm reviewing it as a SONG... and it is one of the worst I have ever heard. You can call it a gift but in the end it's still a song and people are going to give their thoughts on it like any other. To say that we shouldn't because it is a gift is a lame excuse (almost as lame as Jersey Girl not being "for critics")

I am one of those people here that is very critical about his current output,
but arent you all a bit premature here with your judgement? I agree, this 1 minute snippet sounds laughable in his current form, but: - judging to the instrumentation, its merely a quickly recorded demo. - imagine that its slowed down quite a bit, and the melody is played by a full marching band. Then you get a rather typical 'sports anthem', just as corny as any other anthem used by a sportclub, not better, but definitely not worser. I still dont like it, but it seems to serve its purpose.

I agree with this. It's obviously a demo, and the finished product will have more 'umph' Actually the finished product may have ALOT more umph. Song still sucks in its current form though.

oh man, that is the WORST song ever. It sounds like a really bad Christmas song. "So strange that no one stayed at the end of the Parade..." - Wendy & Lisa's "Song About" on their 1987 self-titled album.

You Americans sure have some fruity football songs. I thought they were Vikings not Choir Boys. I do nothing professionally. I only do things for fun. johnart: Acrylic's old bras is where tits of all sizes go to frolic after they die. Tit Heaven.

I listened to it again, and it sounds like a slow introduction, but then I get the feeling the rest of the song will pep up as it moves along. I don't know, guess we'll have to just wait and see. Prince is usually full of surprises. [Edited 1/22/10 6:50am]

[Edited 1/22/10 6:49am] Fight songs usually aren't long. The crowds will chant the songs at the games. Exactly, I don't see this particular song as a fight song, it was the op that labeled it as one, so I believe that is what everyone expected. I didn't see an article where it stated Prince said it was a fight song, just that he wrote a song for the team as a gift, which to me looks more like he was creating an anthem for the team. In the article below, it never mentioned it was a "fight" song: Prince Reveals Song for Vikings-Saints Game 'Purple and Gold' was written for Sunday's game Updated: Friday, 22 Jan 2010, 9:00 AM CST Published : Thursday, 21 Jan 2010, 9:38 PM CST Prince released a new song about the Minnesota Vikings. Prince said he hadn’t seen the Vikings play in a very long time, until he went to the game against the Dallas Cowboys last week. “I saw the future,” said Prince. He said he went home that night, wrote the song, "Purple and Gold," and said the song came easy and fast. The Vikings love it and plan to put it on their site. [Edited 1/22/10 7:06am]

I'm just a bit worried about the reaction he is going to get from the supporters of the team. Obviously he has gotten his stuff associated with the team only because of his own status as a"musical legend". Just about anyone else could have pulled off something better. Furthermore, when he offers a song of this type for such a purpose he seems almost delusional (maybe he should have offered them a remake of Graffiti Bridge instead). Nothing new in that sense though, but it still just throws you off a bit. [Edited 1/22/10 3:21am] That's similar to my own opinion. It has that same sparse thumpy hollow fairytale 'production' (instrumentally) as that Jehovah's Witness instrumental backing track he did a while back - really painfully bland, cloying and disproportially fatty like cheap Russian chocolate. The vocal harmonies almost seem parodic of his own layering style, stagnation or classic, your choice. I guess it doesn't exist to change the world or set radio alight. But, all art should be judged on the same level of intent, and in this case it's pretty poor even in the context of a free throwaway cast-off for his favourite sports team. He'll be mocked, derided and dismissed as an artistic force - and I'm sure the players won't exactly feel full of confidence and winning form on getting led out to the pitch with that tune. It's almost Monty Python. Lotus Flower proves he hasn't gone completely bongo. It may be a poorly executed 'in-joke' for the diehards or personal friends. Whatever the intenet, I'm afraid it's a fail for me. However, the so-called lyrical 'blasphemy' regarding the Jesus analogy is no different to what he's being doing since Controversy, so fuck off with that. Most of Prince's lyrics don't stand alone when set apart from music, so I certainly don't think it's justified condeming a song on that basis alone.

"I am a huge Prince fan. People who know me know this. I think he’s may be the greatest genius in popular music. Hundreds of songs that a sheer brilliance. But the best thing about this dude… when he makes a terrible song, he does not go half-steppin’. Whooooo. This is “must be the money” awful."
