New topic PrintablePrince wrote this for the Vikings, not for the ingrates on this site.
The Vikings say they Love it, Thats what matters. All the negativity in here is really sad. Peace. Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

Hm I don't like but it's for a football team. It sounds like something they would chant.
It kind of sounds like a sing-a-long off Barney & Friends "He said he went home that night, wrote the song, "Purple and Gold", and he said the song came easy and fast"
No shit | |

i sent my friend (also a prince fan) a cell phone picture of the article on fox news and he replied back:
"couldn't make that shit up if u tried.. how strange" that pretty much sums it up.

Is this song going to be played in its entirety at the upcoming game? Will everyone in attendance be charged an extra $77.00 for hearing it?

Wow, Wedding Feast was so well received, I think I'll do it again seriously, as a full-length stand-alone song!
(I always quite liked WF as a throw-away tongue-in-cheek). OKm this could be it - the full song would have to have one funk verse, one rock verse and one jazz or ballad verse, each of which takes music to new unbelievable heights, for this not to be the nail in the coffin... If I don't hear a sample of Jack Nicholson LHAO at the end of the trak, I think it's all over between us... "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

I saw the thread title "Prince creates fight song for Minnesota Vikings!" and in my head I heard "Days of Wild" which this song is so not. The choppy snippet I heard sounded like nails on a chalkboard, but it was a choppy snippet and as sweet little optimistic RubyButterfly said, (paraphrasing) maybe the song is more than what we've heard thus far. :fetalposition:

It was such an opportunity to gain some cred amongst people who don't normally listen to his music. Ah, maybe it will grow on me.
Great idea though. Props for that, P. "I have a date with Lisa. Isn't that wonderful?"

Now this is fun The lyrics are lovely...the song ok it's a football song and I don't get American football, but i think it's great that Prince does these kinds of things.
Being involved in sport is a healthy past time. It encourages team building, teaches us to win or lose and smile, plus overall it's WE oriented. Go Prince, more Vamos! Quick Poll in the Huffington Post: What do you think of Prince's ode to the Vikings? Amazing. He's still got it!: 26.67% Nothing special.: 20.27% Total disaster. He should stick to "Erotic City.": 53.07% You can tell about Prince's Future , but his Past is utterly unpredictable

"Purple and Gold" is in the tradition of a spirit and team alma mater. It sounds to me as a song that would be played in Victory. If the Vikings go all the way to the Super Bowl and win, this would be the song heard around the sports world with fans singing and celebrating in unity at the games end. I like the kind, sweet and proud type feel and spirit to the music. It shows another dimension to Prince and his music. I really want to hear a full high quality version of the song! The instruments and arrangement are interesting. I dig it! MY COUSIN WORKS IN A PHARMACY AND SHE SAID THEY ENEMA'D PRANCE INTO OBLIVION WITH FENTONILS!!

But, after listening, i find it's CLEAR Prince is throwing back to the hymns of old, a classic war hymn. Its like wedding feast, you bug about it's awfulness when it's again, clearly tongue in cheek. This is the same, a short supportive fight hymn of old. Nothing more. Not a new song. Do i like it? No, why would i? it's not a new song but, i see it for what it is, no problem. And if anything...its taking Prince's diversity even further, don't you think?...anything he can't do? I can't believe how much people have missed the point. But, it's easier to rip on him eh? On a side note, i remember reading that some people here wanted him to do a kid type album full of kid style melodies and shock everyone and get them all wind up....coincidence??? [Edited 1/21/10 21:20pm] Yes. This song is a standalone piece of shit. MY COUSIN WORKS IN A PHARMACY AND SHE SAID THEY ENEMA'D PRANCE INTO OBLIVION WITH FENTONILS!!

Hmmm, not my particular cup of tea musically. Obviously church, hymn, anthem inspired. Sounds a bit like something a High School might have as their school anthem.
Having said all that, loving the fact that Prince is behind the Vikings. I've been watching this season's games and the playoffs avidly here in the UK. Hoping the Vikes get to the Superbowl (Favre vs Manning would be a pretty cool finale). I've booked Monday off and will be wearing my Peterson jersey this Sunday for the NFC Championship game. Go Vikes! [Edited 1/22/10 1:54am] Just somewhere in the middle,
