Sweetie, I've been listening to that song since it came out 21 years ago. If it hasn't grown by now, it won't ever. And it hasn't. Eh well....there are better collaborations than this one, easily. I think this song is great, gets even better with time, I love that they (Prince, Madonna) din't went for the obvious spectacular super star duet, I don't think the song needs to be catchy (unless you want a top ten hit etc.), love the off beat chorus, the song give balance to the over the top Like a prayer production, there's a reason why this album was Madonna's most praised musical achievement back then. Love Song is one of the few Madonna songs that I really believe what she was singing (like Justify my love, Into the groove, live to tell etc). "I have so much love for Prince. But why don't they look at me that way"- MJ

Erika don't feel bad...old Ernest just doesn't quite get it sometimes cause he's got all the answers...it's quite "logical" regarding the song...it sucked then and still does The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Didn't Prince also play rhythm guitar on Keep It Together on the album? RIP

The whole song is an Anti-LOVE SONG....its not suppose to be sweet and genius, its a torrid deal, not a happy song, thats why the initial collaboration was a bit like ICE...its not about warmth and cuddles...maybe if you listen with this perception, you can appreciate it a lil more. To quote Boris Fishpaw:
He just played the almost 'metal' squalling guitar part that is virtually buried in the mix on most versions of the song. It can only be clearly heard on "Act Of Contrition" (which is just Like A Prayer played backwards with some improvised lyrics over the top, and just serves as a bookend to the album). However, he does play a rhythm guitar part on Keep It Together (which only appears on the album version of the track).

Love Madonna. Love Prince. Was sure I would love this song when I bought Like a Prayer (which, sadly, was only two years ago...) On first listen, I detested it. It has slightly grown on me, but the collaboration between the two could have (and should have) been much better. And Ernest is right...it doesn't fit on her album AT ALL...sticks out rather obtrusively.
The rest of the album, for the record, is very good. =0P Brace yourself
The best is yet to come | |
