Not true on this song, the unreleased version is just raunchy, it would have a xxx that the released version couldn't touch. 81 tick tick bang is just that, it was New Wave in your face... blows the GB version out the water

Here's my take...

The unreleased version is pretty fucking cool! Damn cool.

But the released version is the best. It's the same song, all fleshed out and it is dirty also, but more tastefully done.

BUT... The released version makes the unreleased version that much cooler. Hearing where the released version originated from is very cool.

I am in with you guys. The original version sounds really messy. I like both but the GB version is one of the first songs I remember Prince having with heavy kick drums. When I got the GB TAPE (gasp) it was a favorite because it was one of few songs I could play with my high school girlfriend in the car and she not complain. BUT I still love it and I too like the GB performance one of the few decent moments in tragically bad long music video (GB is NOT a movie its an entended music video for an album

The dirty mind version sounds like a demo for a Sha-nana show.

The Tick Tick Bang 1981 version is NOT a Dirty Mind session...It was an outtake for the Controversy album, it was recorded in mid 1981
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

Believe it or not, I like the GB version better. It's more fleshed out, though the only thing I don't like about it is the, uncredited, sampled Jimi track for its drum loop! It's a funky-ass loop, but it's a shame he had to sample it instead using of his own funky arrangement.

the original version was made during his Dirty Mind-Controversy New Wave vibe

the genre is new wave, it's not messy at all. That's the style, similar to Sexuality(my fav from Controversy)

Once U understand the style U get the song even more

...came to be categorized as "New Wave". This came to include musicians who had come to prominence in the British pub rock scene of the mid-1970s, such as Ian Dury, Nick Lowe, Eddie and the Hot Rods and Dr Feelgood;[8] and according to allmusic "angry, intelligent" singer-songwriters who "approached pop music with the sardonic attitude and tense, aggressive energy of punk" such as Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, and Graham Parker.
