Lotus is a great album, Planet earth is even better, 3121 is very good also. Planet earth seems to get a lot of negative comments.
All 3 are better than the outdated sounding D+P, Gold Experience and Love Symbol albums... Tony M RUINED them!!!

3121, Musicology, Planet Earth and LotusFlow3r/MPLSound are all incredible albums!

The musical landscape it covers is absolutely fantastic and is vastly rich in layers, sound and diversity with a great amount of styles and sounds in pop, rock and funk/R&B. The lyrics flow with creativity and imagery and the musicianship is remarkable.

Add the Rainbow Children, NEWS, One Nite Alone, The Chocolate Invasion and The Slaughterhouse to the mix and I see an accomplished decade in music and in Prince history.

3121 over Planet Earth and Lotus Flower... Now, I have to say, I'm not the BIGGEST fan of 3121, I think it could have been better. But I can listen to it. I actually really like Incense and Candles... but then again, don't listen to me, I like Gangster Glam too.

I agree w/nyse, Giovanni777 and rlittler81. This past decade has been some of the best. I LOVE 3121, PLANET EARTH & LOTUS.

I realy like the new material. and i think it can stand up to alot of older material.

3121,Planet Earth, lotusflow3r and Mplsound are all great albums and I personally enjoy them as much as his 1980's albums and his beter albums in the 1990's.

3121 is ok but not better than Planet Earth. And Lotusflow3r is the best.

Planet Earth, not as much except for the title track and 2 others.

All of these albums are worth to listen to

This is the musical face-off equivalent of a modern boxing tournament featuring Jake LaMotta, Mohammed Ali and Gerald McClellan.

And it's just as tough:

Jake's the most mobile, but he's almost 90 year's old for god's sake. And the smallest of the three.

Mohammed Ali can't throw a punch due to the Parkinson's, but he can still try to command the ring much better than...

Gerald McClellan who is in a wheel chair and blind. But he's easily the youngest of the three, and can still chuck a killer blow almost at random like a Vietnam Vet suddenly woken by a loud bang.

Diffult one. Gonna go for 3121, since the title track is the only thing from all three albums that could maybe justify an admitedly anachronistic inclusion in anything pre 1996.

There are a few good moments on Planet Earth, but overall it's a stinker. 2 or 3 good songs don't redeem the entire project. The ones I find listenable are SHOE, FBM, and Chelsea Rodgers ... but tell me when, in any other field, is 20-30% enough?

LotusFlow3r, on the other hand, is literally a reverse of PE: every song other than 2 or 3 is a home run (for me).

Using Squirrelgrease's "control" of SOTT being 5 stars:

I'm judging the LotusFlow3r disc alone (not coupled with MPLSound).

Planet Earth was disappointing to me on several levels.

1) Most of the songs just didn't work IMO. A lot of the songs almost seem like they were sung out of key, and some were just too corny.
2) I thought he wasted a prime opportunity after the Superbowl to release a guitar-based album the very next Tuesday. Imagine if LotusFlow3r had been released then? Of course hindsight is 20/20, but I don't think I'm alone on this one.
3) With an album title like "Planet Earth", and the poetic speech he gave with the same lyrics, I expected an Earth-conscious concept album. Even if they were only linked by related segues, that would be something. Instead, it was a mishmash album with no theme.
4) Finally, and only slightly, I felt that giving this album away free in a newspaper "set the tone" of how it would be received.

They are all close in my rankings, but Lotusflow3r/MPLsOUND are slightly better, still they don't have much memorability and are kind of relegated to occasional listen when a new album comes along. My rankings
