Out of all the unreleased unofficial live bootlegs from the man, which one would have been considered a true classic by critics and the public and earned a sure spot in the top-5 of all Prince albums?

This might not be an obscure release or an unexpected choice, but I'd defintely pick "Lovesexy Live In Dortmund 1988", an impressively varied performance and a spectacular live show during an peak period of Prince's career.

You get the guitar playing, amazing vocal performance, the piano medley, dancing, full energy showcasing the entire spectra of Prince's musical genres - rock, funk, the ballads, the pop hits...

I'm sure this would have been praised as a masterpiece live album and a live DVD and been up there in most fans & music lovers top-5 for Best official Prince albums released.

What do you think? What would be your pick?

Well, that one was released on video at the time. And it is great, I just wished it would be longer and contain more.

The 1988 aftershow @ Trojan Horse in The Hague is already pretty legendary, and for good reason. Damn great to hae that as a soundbord.

Also great that the soundboard is circulating for the Feb 13, 1994 gig @ Paisley park.

I'm also happy that some of those early live shows are circulating, it's fascinating to compare "1982-11-30 - Detroit - City Lights" with "1983-02-10 - Providence - City Lights" with "1983-04-02 - Fresno - 1999 Revisited", for instance.

I'd personally like to get a soundboard copy of several of the aftershows from the 1995 tour (especially the Emporium shows): great music, tons of energy, awesome audiences.

It didn't really sound like the "America" we knew, but they did perform it. Prince invited them on stage one at a time, and talked about how "shapely" (or something close) they were, meaning they'd all put on weight. Fink said he wore his scrubs for it. The band was already playing when the 3 Revolutionites jumped in and took over. It was the only song they played on. It was fun that they were together, but without W&L, it seemed to come up short. It's a bit of a broken reunion with that, and then with W&L later on the Brit Awards (which I felt was a better "reunion" than the Celebration one).

it's either labeled 2000 or 2001 Celebration. I think it's 2001. The set also has unreal versions of Kiss and Days of Wild. When I first got ahold of it, I probably listened to it for a month straight. It's B+ sound quality, but the NPG funk is way hot on those 3 Cd's

it's the 2000 celebration, Larry was still Prince's bassist and John Blackwell was still another 3 months away from joining the band. He still had the horn section aswell that he was using in the rave era

Thanks Ernest!

Except Prince kicks Booby Z off stage when he misses a beat and get gets Kirk Johnson subbed back on. The crowd moan, and just by listening, you can't tell if it was done in humour or not.

Personally i think 'Small Club' is overrated.

He stretches many of the songs for way TOO long: I know, he does some great guitar-solo's on the album, but it borders on overindulgement (and often gets boring) to turn songs that works perfectly fine in a 4 or 5 minute version (even in a live-setting) to 10 minute jams all of the time.

Next to that, the mix isnt great on the album: the bass, drums and especially vocals are not loud enough, while the synths and the guitar are way too loud in comparison.
I know, it is an illegal soundboard recording, but it takes away a lot of the listening pleasure.

Allthough i am impressed by the Lovesexy / Livesexy performances, my main complaint when it comes to that material is: the over-use of medleys. Prince songs work best when they are performed in its entirety, and not like 1 - 3 minute snippets in medleys.

I havent many live bootlegs of him, so its hard for me to judge which one is best. But i still would love to hear some qood quality recordings of the Sign of the Times tour. To me that remains his best tour ever.

The Small Club and the august 1983 concerts are obvious choices as they became cult fan-favorites! I'd add the 1994 Beautiful Experience concert and other shows from that era as personnal favorites.

I agree with the fact that it's somehow overrated but it has its history (there wasn't that many soundboard recorings circulating back then) and it has this very particular atmosphere, quite different from the other 88 aftershows, with that great instrumental jam, that totally crazy rendition of "People Without", and of course the fact that Eric wasn't there, leaving more room for Atlanta than on any other show.
