He's up there but I gotta go with Arthur Lee of Love if only for the song "Maybe the People Would Be the Times or Between Clark and Hilldale".

Oh, also, Terence Trent D'Arby is the one to put really odd phrases in his music that you'd not normally hear.

I don't agree. Since we're discussing titles versus subject matter, Prince for the most part, just titles a song to coincide with the chorus or hook - like most other artists do.

Instrumentalists tend to have the more intriguing song titles, as it makes one contemplate the significance of it's meaning. Prince's instrumental efforts like 2 Nigs United 4 West Compton, Clockin' The Jizz, the Xpectations project and especially the Madhouse albums were creative and quite witty. The Madhouse remix titles are great too. Some other extended tracks and remixes by Prince had interesting titles as well, like Housequake (7 Minutes MoQuake) and Gett Off (Damn Near 10 Minutes).

Artists like Frank Zappa and the Butthole Surfers were Much more creative in naming lyrical-based songs than Prince ever was.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Same for Smashing Pumpkins. Sometimes I really wonder why "Hummer" is called Hummer lol I read somewhere that Billy thinks of the songname by this formula: you wrote a song about roses - they are red - bulls are being attached by red - so the songname will be "Cow" lol

That's true. Corgan has some clever naming conventions.

'Sexy Motherfucker' is bold according Ernest....?

I'm not native english, does it mean you don't appreciate this classic Prince song, or does it mean you just find the title bold, but still love the song...?

hmmmm strange,biggrin

btw.... I just heart SEXY MF, it's a sexxy funk jam of a song IMO... wink

sorry if I'm a bit off topic.

Bold meaning fearless or daring. It's not typical that an artist calls a song "Pussy Control" or "Sexy Motherfucker". That's a bold move. Although they are also interesting, the balls it took to name a song "Vibrator", and not blink an eye in the process.....that's bold...and brave.

what about Pink Floyd's Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving With a Pict, for a title.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

Spooky - I was going to make all those points (bar Butthols Surfers) myself! Get out of my head you! wink

Zappa, in particular, is most worthy of the mention. Dinah-Moe Humm, Cleetus Alwreetus, Sheik Yerbouti, The Grand Wazoo.....classics! 2 other great-named UK bands with excellent song and album titles are Ozric Tentacles and Shpongle lol

Im sorry but "If You Seek Amy" has got to be the most clever song title i ever heard. i only heard the song once though. and wished that it was "hidden" better....

oh...prince- right yeah.

i had an idea for creating a "prince song title generator" where you plug in random "Stuff" with a color, an adj, etc. and jumble it up. but i lost interest.

I wrote a princesque song called, " bitch fantastic".... thats about as close as i can get to cool song titles

It's a soft drink.

Also it describes something bitter sweet. So you could replace the words bitter sweet with Lemon Crush through out the whole song and get a more conventional song but not as great.

Ready 4 the crush

Example
Every time U kiss me - bitter sweet
Nay, I can't resist thee - bitter sweet
Ooh it goes right through me - bitter sweet

Another good example of it is in the song color by The Steeles. Where the word color is a replacement for the word Judge.

Example
Judge me black if U Judge me just like U
Judge me angry if U Judge me less than I do
(Whoa, what's your Judge?)
Yeah, what's your Judge?
