Do you think Prince....

Bases his album titles on the songs he's already produced

or

thinks up an album title and takes it from there

What do you think?

Both. Except for the "Prince" album - no idea where that title came from.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I believe that Prince has a general emotion or statement He wants the song to make...Begins to write the song or lyrix with an intended name. When it is finished Prince makes a final decision on Title. cool

Oddly, I'm agreeing with Tame....the first part. It's probably a mood or an idea in the songs. ATWIAD really encompassed odd travels, characters, and situations. Almost every song has a character in it. Jimmy Nothing, The King in the Land of Sinaplenty, Elektra (his subject), the woman who looked like Clara Bow, etc etc. Parade and Purple Rain were really thematic and concept albums. Even "Lovesexy" was a very specific idealism throughout. COME is a very sexual album, beginning and ending in sexual acts. So having used those examples, it really is just an overall theme to the album. I think that kicked in as early as Controversy. He hit that creative force again in the mid 90's with Exodus, The Gold Experience, Emancipation, etc etc.
