"Old Skool Company" is like 'The Black Album' meeting "Sign O' The Times', and PURELY Prince...Complete with one of the greasiest funk guitar rhythms ever. I usually pick up the Bass on this one, since there's so much room 4 it... Yep. Also, I feel as if "Dance 4 Me" is of the same ilk. Which, ultimately, is why I scratch my head at the hate some of the 2009 material gets. I like this funk stuff better than the funk on New Power Soul and Rave by quite a bit. [Edited 1/6/10 12:43pm] Agreed totally. "He's a musician's musician..."

Shit Hop = Your favorite way of saying hip hop. How does Ol' SKool Company sound/feel hip hop at all? I hear a little George, and some 70's pimp vibe, in there... but no real Hip Hop influence at all... It sounds like some bullshit by Dr. Dre and Snoop Doggy Dog from the early 1990s. Andy is a four letter word.

Another example of how weak Princes 'funk' songs have become the last 15 years or so.
Plodding along, poorly composed, no exciting or surprising instrumental passages, and simply not funky at all. The kind of material he can write on auto-pilot.

vainandy said: It sounds like some bullshit by Dr. Dre and Snoop Doggy Dog from the early 1990s. You just made my point. Dre and Snoop's early 90's sound WAS George Clinton. Are you really dismissing Prince songs that sound like P-Funk type of stuff because it reminds you of hip hop (which was recycling George anyways)? Listen,I know how you feel about hip hop, but I think your hatred of the genre is skewing your view on this one. BTW that bullshit by Dr. Dre and Snoop is widely regarded as classic stuff now. Not saying that means you have to dig it, but it is what it is. A whole new generation of fans were turned onto to George because of early Dre and Snoop. The kind of material he can write on auto-pilot. Sure, but who else can or would? Average for Prince is better than most for me. "New Power slide...."

I don't hate it. I don't love it. I wouldn't call it mediocre by any means, it's just not... special. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I'd add Riverpoet31's comment about "auto-pilot" to that, and it'd sum it up for me.

You're right, but I quite like this song. And it's still much better than all that radio crap. Not to me. Although I'd rather hear this on the radio than bloody Raspberry Beret or any of the other five songs they seem to have.

most arguments here are true, but of everything from that collective it was the most infectous. i dont judge it by past masterpieces but it captured a sentiment and would have had legs on adult contemporary R&B stations-for the grown folks. We are talkin bout hits not groundbreaking awe inspiring stuff right?

It took a few listens to get into, which is not uncommon with Prince songs, but then the full force of the song hit. It's a funky gem with a cool vocal performance.
Agree. IMO one of his best from the last decade along with Pfunk & 3121. Long live the great Camille!!! Keep Ur Mind In A Vertical Motion,Always Looking Up.

There's nothing new here, it sounds like something to the back end of NPS or from the NPGMC years, which was a career low IMO. The minute it starts I just want to skip it, I've heard it all before. These awful drawl tracks that just drag along and don't take ANY interesting twists or turns, it's 7+ minutes too!

I have no idea what you're saying. Can you learn to quote someone better and type beneath that so people can read what the fuck you're talking about? Seriously, no idea what you said. I think what he was actually trying to say was: Just because it is not being played on the radio does not mean it isn´t funky my brother.Radio stations only play music that fits into their format and you know Prince does not really fit into any format.Don´t let radio dictate your taste. It´s people like you that make the radio stations keep playing crap because you think if it´s being played on the radio then it must be good. Go and listen to Eric Hutchinson´s CD, radio stations don´t play his music but his music really sounds great. I must say I agree with what JoelMarable said in so far as it doesn´t really matter whether that song was on heavy rotation or not. It is still funky in a good way, not in a retro way with tons of horns and another JB-like funk riff but more in a Camille-esque way. If this song were an outtake on some bootleg from the late 80s, earyl 90s we´d all be raving about it. It is surely not in the same league as, say, Shockdelica or Scarlett Pussy but definitely right up there with Come On and other newer, minimalistic funk cuts by Prince. The only thing that is getting on my nerves is the constant name dropping and the bragging in that song and the Minneapolis sound references when actually this song is a far cry from the real Minneapolis sound that Prince and Flyte Time and Jesse and Andre created. But other than that, it is, IMO, one of the better songs on that album. What I can´t stand at all is the song No More Candy 4 U....practically unlistenable. Sure, it does remind one of Ronnnie Talk To Russia and some other early 80s/Controversy material but I couldn´t stand Ronnie Talk to Russia and Jack U Off either, so this kind of flashback does nothing for me but Old Skool Company had some potential. Another case of Prince ruining an almost good song by pointless name dropping, bragging and imitating current trends (Ja Rule with J-Lo, Fifty´s In Tha Club, Dr.Dre, etc.). Funny that it´s an ode to the old school when actually the whole atmosphere of that song, including the lyrics and the beat, don´t imply old school at all. Enough ranting...I like this song ( every once in a while) " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I still have not stopped playing the MPLSound disc since I purchased it. Don't understand the hate for his recent efforts but some stuff just isn't for everyone but then again some of you just love to hate on. I'm still rockin' this one until he drops me something new. I am so sick of hearing Lady Gag and 3 from Brittney Spears right now. Are there any other songs out there that the poop stations can play over and over again??? [Edited 1/7/10 4:32am]
