In January of 1982 Prince met Denise Mattews backstage at a show. He asked if she wanted to become part of the girl group he was planning.She found the meeting bizarre and exciting. He wanted her to take him to the washroom. His manager came up to her and says this guy Prince wants to know if u could take him to the bathroom. She said "Ain't that a line and a half. No I will not.U can take that back to him "she said.Then Prince started following her. He took off his jacket and asked if she would take off hers. She asked Why? He said So he could try on hers and she try on his. So they each tried on each others jackets and realised they fit each others clothes. She thought it was wonderful.Prince wanted Denise to use the name Vagina but she didn't think it would be such a good idea, feeling the name would be "a little more appropriate for a hooker". She agreed to change her name to Vanity and The Hookers became VANITY 6 although the concept remained the same. Denise has said that Prince named her Vanity because she was a mirror in which he saw his own reflection. She says,"I was as narcissistic as he was. As far as what's inside me, Denise Matthews and Vanity are the same person."

I read somewhere that Vanity had a "brief" affair with Albert Magnoli before the filmimg of Purple Rain. Which that wouldn"t surprise me...I don"t think Prince nor Vanity were probably faithful to one another..."Everbody just a freakin' good times were rollin'". I do agree that Apollonia had the girl next door appeal, but I think Purple Rain would have had a much more sexier darker feel if Vanity had of been in the movie...both Prince and Vanity had a very strong camera presence...it would have been interesting to see.
