Purple is the color of sexuality and sprituality. Perfect for Prince. It's also a unisex color.

Purple is aLso one of the colors of royalty and fitted in with his Controversy/1999/Purple Rain stage costumes (ruffles, lace). He was playing on his name: Prince. As he was called His Royal Badness. He had a purple jacket from Controvery era and it did look very striking on him. I think it's probably something more personal to him creatively as well. There maybe other reasons too. Don't you think Torquiose Rain would have looked a bit crap?

I recall someone saying that "Purple Rain" is about the return of Christ and armaggedon. So when red blood fills the blue sky, it will rain purple. Has anyone heard this interpretation?

Why not purple? Perhaps purple is in fact his favorite color. People who love purple are obssessive about it. Purple has been my favorite color since birth and I surround myself with it. I even have a purple mustang. I call her Purple Rain.

Amazing.

In medieval Europe, blue dyes were rare and expensive, so only the most wealthy or the aristocracy could afford to wear them. The working class wore mainly green and brown. Because of this (and also because Tyrian purple had gone out of use in western Europe after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in AD 476), Europeans' idea of purple shifted towards this more bluish purple known as royal purple because of its similarity to the royal blue worn by the aristocracy. This was the shade of purple worn by kings in medieval Europe.

Oh yes wink "...Purple is the color of transmutation, changing from one state to another-indeed we are each becoming butterflies.
Since change isn't possible without forgiveness, and that is the royal road of life, it is also of the spirit. It does happen to be toward the end of the light spectrum, that may be significant..."
"...Purple is usually the color of royalty, high rank, or dignity. purple has spiritual connotations. It represents spiritual and personal transformation..."

I'm not offended AndtheDevilWorkedOnYou. I'm just kidding. cool

Let's see..Why Purple.

It is a Royal Sensuous Color. It is mysterious and majestic. Passionate. There is something Vinyard thirsty about the color that also quenches your spirit. It's Masculine and Feminine. cool

Prince is color-blind and has no sense of touch. He thinks he's wearing brown corduroy.

I'm going to take a while guess that he was imitating Jimi Hendrix a lot in his earlier career, and Purple Rain was close enough to 'Purple Haze' in naming. In the 80's you sold an entire package to the audience (image, look, theme, story, etc.), and Prince did just that. Prior to 1999/Purple Rain there's no indication that purple was his favorite color or even an important color.

And he seemed to use a different color palette with subsequent albums, but he got famous off of Purple Rain.

I would imagine he's just as Peach & Black, or Blue, as purple depending on his mood.

Either way the colors are really really gay when worn on a man in the outfits that he wears, so they might as well be bright pink, which of corse he's been known to wear.
